Speedo cable replacement:  easy DIY job on ramps?  (Happy with thoughts and tips in general, although any specific knowledge of this on SD1 V8s would be fab.)  I have a fresh cable and lots of spanners.

I've Googled it and looked on PooTube, but all that tells me is it's probably doable on a motorbike and on a BFO Holden in the Australian desert.

What with all this new tax law nonsense, what happens if you want to lend a car to someone for a week or two?

Previously, they'd only need to be insured but obviously now there's the tax to consider. I did ponder a sort of 'receipt' as such in case they crashed it or went through a red light, basically just saying they'd bought the car to cover my arse, but then there would be the issue if them not having tax.

Any thoughts?

Posted

Don't think you have to own a car to insure it, so if you have tax on it anyway nothing has changed. If not, tax it and cash it in/cancel  direct debit when finished with. I think!

Posted

If they actually 'buy' it and are shown as a new keeper on the V5 then yeh they'd also have to tax it.

If they were to borrow it and you are still shown as the owner on V5 and nothing changes legally then tax would be ok.

Brilliant, cheers.

Have I asked a question that's too stupid even for the stupid questions thread?  ;-)  :-)

Might have a go tomorrow anyway as the rain's supposed to stop.  WCPGW.

I will ask the SD1 guys, and will post up any response I get Skizzer.

How do you best drive an auto? Do you use the manual gears much or let the box do the work? Are the manual gears only useful in certain circumstances.

Posted

Stick it in Drive and let the box do the work, unless its icey or snowing then using 1st or 2nd can be a god send.

Posted

I had a tipronic Merc for a couple of years and the box was very slick and always got it right, the semi auto side was only toys for boys, not needed. All the autos I've had were better left to themselves though I hear some can be a bit lazy on kickdown. I used to drive the Corvette as a semi auto solely for the noises you could make!

Posted

Stick it in D. Sport for fast 😊

The others are for engine braking really rather than a manual change.

You're a scholar and a gentleman, thanks.  Suppose really I should join the SD1 gang myself: I just have a bit of an allergy to one-make/model owners' clubs based on experience elsewhere.

Not had any response Re the speedo cable :-(

Is there anything mentioned in the HBOL?

Posted

Nope, tried that.  I'll get underneath the car later (or more likely tomorrow - forgot I have work to do ) and have a look.  I figure if I can see (and reach) where it goes into the gearbox and through the bulkhead, it can't be too hard.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the cables often go, which is why I just ordered a new one (not very expensive, even from Rimmers).  I was then slightly surprised not to find any forum discussion or other info about replacing them, other than in relation to engine/gearbox swaps (and that on non-SD1s).  Hope I don't need a new speedo - would be a shame to drop in a 'new' one with an extra 100k miles on the odometer.

Posted

I can't see it being a problem. The two ends should be reasonably accessible and it should be simple enough to follow the route.

Posted

I recently did the one on my cortina and it was simple other than the following.

Getting off the bastard circlip holding it into the gearbox when I had no circlip pliers

The speedo drive turned out to be chewed when I got the cable out

Removing the speedo drive meant I had to take a core plug out the gearbox, which dumped all the oil all over the floor of my garage. I can still smell the bastard stuff 6 months later.

I can't see the SD1, one being much more complex.  I changed one on a Volvo 360 once and it ran off the front wheel!

Posted

That sounds like the sort of spiralling disaster that usually follows my attempts at a simple job (witness today's effort at just buying a new battery, FFS).  I'll take pictures and let you know the morrah.

What are your thoughts on winter/snow tyres? I have been driving for many years and have never had or needed are they worth the outlay a quick look suggests from £30ish.

Do you just put them on the driven wheels or on all 4?

How about storage when the OMGSNOWKAOSS doesn't happen like last year and you swap back to normal tyres how do you store them.

Lots of questions i know just wondering.

Posted

I'd go for winter-oriented all season tyres and keep them on all year round, they are great in pissy wet conditions as well as wintry weather.

Driven wheels or all 4? Winter tyres on the front of a FWD car and summer tyres and the rear can lead to snap oversteer if you get over-confident, I guess the opposite would be the same on an RWD car, it wouldn't want to brake or steer.

Posted

I bought a set last year and left them on all year. Only downside is that they are noiser on the road. Put them on all 4 wheels.

Bearing in mind it rains nearly all the flipping time here I think they were well worth it.

Then I do live on a farm track which is muddy at best of times

Posted

Winter tyres are not a necessity, but they certainly make your life easier in frosty or snowy conditions. I've personally seen little difference in the rain, but I suppose this depends on what summer tyres you compare them to.

A set of four would be the safest option. Putting them on the driven wheels in an FWD could well lead to unintended DRIFT KING moments. I have, however, had them on the rear wheels of my 740 with no issues (cms206 should soon be able to test the combination in more extreme weather and report back !).

When the weather gets warmer, you just stack them in the shed until the next winter.

Posted

They are noisier but you get used to it, the Peugeot was supplied with all-season tyres and they don't half rumble at first.

Posted

my spaceship wears 225/45/17 summer tyres so for winter i have a set of 205/55/16

when we had the snow 2 yr ago the spaceship felt more secure and grippy than the works polo with smaller tyres which did get stuck several times

convinced me well enuff!

When did someone last see one of those anti static rubber strips that prevent travel sickness? They were often hanging down off the back of Morris Marina's and Mini Metro's or other such 70s/80s shite.

I seem to remember one in ten cars having them in the 80s then suddenly remembered today I haven't seen one for years!!

How are panels made where the rear wings and roof are all one pressing? Stamped as flat then the wings bent down?

The Corrosion has this, as did the Justy

If you have a snow/ice button it is perfect for rolling along in a traffic jam at 10mph... stops the constant 1st gear/2nd gear/1st gear bollocks
