^ Worn Panhard rod bushes or something? It's maybe worth checking out or having checked the rear arm bushes as well. Rear axle failure would be dead unlucky as it's really rare on RWD Volvos.

Just tried to get a photo from flickr for the Nissan QX thread.

Seems a right ballache to resize and grab the code.

I have a Yahoo account so didn't think I needed to change my account settings.

Maybe I'm just being Mr Thicky from Thicktown in the county of Thicksville but  a little help would be appreciated.

I was thinking the same thing, especially since it's just come on suddenly. The axle's always been a bit 'moany' but they go on like that for thousands of miles. Previous owner changed the oil so unless it's all pissed out again I doubt it's that.

I'm no mechanic so it looks like it'll be a garage visit, which I can ill afford at the moment. :(

They do whine a bit but rarely give trouble. I'd put money on it being worn bushes somewhere. If all the oil had pissed, out the back of the diff casing would be wet and it would probably have dribbled somewhere.

I've (perhaps foolishly) offered to service my sister's 2008 Hyundai i10 1.1 in the next couple of months.  Apparently it needs new front brake pads and possibly discs, no problem doing that but as it's a newer car than I'm used to working on and it's someone else's car I'm being a little more selective than normal with my parts choices.  There seem to be a huge number of different manufacturers available with huge price variances, anyone got any feedback on Mintex, Eicher, APEC, Bosch, Brembo or Pagid?  The latter are the only ones I know to be 'premium' brands but no idea what, if any, difference it makes.  I just want it to be safe and brake as well as it can.  It has ABS if that makes any difference at all.

I don't know if it's still the case but I've always found this place to be much cheaper than ECP or GSF for brake discs and they supply decent enough stuff http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/

Found this today at work. What is it?

That looks like an old Honda Prelude to me, Mk2 (1983-87) - but I am wrong, see below

Thanks Richard, will take a look.  I've already knocked £40 off EuroCarParts prices by going via ebay sellers, mostly on the brake parts.  Full set of Brembo front pads and discs £80 as opposed to nearly £120 for Pagid & Bosch items on ECP.  I realise it's not like-for-like but still pretty good in my book.

Incidentally, the bike's going well, absolutely hated it at first but persevered, got it fitted at a local shop (well, as much as they could given its age and hence lack of adjustable parts) and it's made a massive difference, loving it now!  Still getting lots of positive comments on it too.

See those factory stick-on stripes and stuff? How best to remove them?

I have a new RR bonnet and it has some fancy striping on it and it's got to come off along with some special addition Range Rover lettering.

Number plate query.

Someone has posted a pic of this TVR on Facebook.

I looked up the number plate to see if it was a real Grantura or a kit car as there were several of these kits floating around in the late 80's and early 90's at shows daaarn saaarf.

Askmid says:

The details on the MID are:

Vehicle Make/Model: PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 4S

So I check Doovla and it says it is indeed on a SORN'd Porsche.

Whats the griff?

He is maybe in the process of swapping a private plate and is still running about on the old plates.

Other than that, I dont know, probably nefarious.

.

Carparts4less are euro car parts but cheaper-do a quick check on them. I used them for my dads brakes, and were well priced-sent out the right bits first time too:)

Re: this....

What might be the cause of a regular knocking noise from the rear end (of a RWD car) when cornering?

Over the last couple of days the Volvo has started to make a noise similar to that made by a FWD car's CV joint when it wears.

I'm guessing this may well be the cause of it. There's a couple of clean patches on the disc but the rest of the surface area is very poor. My guess is that something's got inside the caliper, possibly a fragment of the disc edge, which seems to be broken.

I'm a crap mechanic with a bad back so it can go to the garage, but assuming that's all it is, I'm quite relieved as it'll be a hell of a lot easier & cheaper to fix than if it was the axle or diff.

Reckon you might well have a seized caliper there too.

Makes you wonder what rear brakes are for, because the brakes on it are fantastic even though it's probably just the fronts doing all the work.

Once saw a 'toffee wheel' in action.... removing the gummy shit after a door trim came off (clean dent into a rear door.. to be pulled out).

Air tool... Wizzzz.... all gone!! Smelt funny... like toffee ;)

Moog: take a walk down the track with a pick-axe, and knock the high bits into the low bits.

sadly they are the drain pipes from t'fields so a pickaxe through em might be an issue :)

Bol posting that 540 Beemer in the tat thread and it got me wondering. Why do you see loads of E34 5-Series with the fuel filler flap missing? Is it a particularly crap design or is it just coincidence?

Build up around the pipes with gravel/cement/hardcore.

Its owned by the farm further round and they can be precious (related to my idiot landlord). They have a massive pile of gravel they use to fill the holes when they get unbearable.

I think i might just have to drive at 5 mph over the bumps and keep fingers crossed

Pottering along the M1 the other day in the bay, closing gently on a Honda Jazz in lane 1, it slows a bit more and I eased out to pass it.

Mrs barefoot & I glanced over to look at the elderly driver who appeared to be FAST A FUCKING SLEEP.

His head was down with his chin resting on his chest.

Bemused, I failed to sound my horn & suddenly I was in front of the fucker.

Any advice?

I drove as fast as I could for a minute or two and hoped for the best.

Stupid question:

Out walking the dog yesterday, I saw a Korean crossover thingy (Kia, I think) with 'AWD' badging on the front wings.

Is this just another way of saying '4WD' or is there a technical difference between All Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive (when the terms are applied to four-wheeled vehicles)? Such as Permanent or selectable 4WD, centre diff, transfer box, high/low range etc etc etc. Or is it just marketing confusion in play?

Posted

It's just marketing: although I'm inclined to think soft roaders and estates tend to be labelled as 'all roads' or 'AWD' so they'll not be OLLI'd and taken into the woods.
