nacho man Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I'm no sparky, but my guess would be PROBABLY. (Not much help am I?) My stoopid-ish question, I'm considering putting the original stereo back in the Capri, but I have a couple of points to check first.1) How do I find out what should have been in there? It's a 1985 Laser, but any Capri unit will do, IIRC the 2.8i had a snazzy digital jobbie. I've got a load of brochures but none that I can find for the period between 1983 and 1989!2) I'd like to keep it looking stock, but have modern gubbins put in, like mp3 and / or a cd driver. I'm sure Trigger has something like this in his Cortina, but I may be mistooken. Does anyone know owt? Anyone got any ideas? Ta!I dont know what it should have had as standard but a guy on the blue forum sells old stereos with a mp3/jack connector out the back, there for sale in the parts section i think.
Hertz Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 1. Add your image to the post as normal2. Highlight the image the same way you'd highlight text3. Click the link button and add your link I've cracked it, ta! Worrying this is I have worked in IT for the past 15 years
meshking Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Rover dizzy is at the front of the engine, so pretty easy, I've seen the rotors fail on those, seem to be the weakest link when on LPG, especially if the plug gaps aren't closed up a shade to compensate, and pattern ones only last a few nanoseconds.Nice one, thanks Des!
Wilko220 Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Any car audio experts in da house? FM works fine. Switch to MW and it works for anything between 1 - 10 seconds before going all interfereancy and seemingly loosing the signal. Switching on and off restores the reception but only for a second or two. In the meantime I'm having to listen to Radio 2 and a combination of Jeremy Vine and Steve Wright is slowly causing mental health issues. My heated rear window plays havoc with my radio signal - but then again the car was built at Longbridge...
cort16 Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 What do you recon the going rate for a part worn 18" tyre is? I've got these bmw wheels but all tyres are shagged.
Cavcraft Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 About £25-£40 a piece, Glenn. Lower end is usually some really awful budget make, with perished side walls and umpteen puncture repairs.
Richard Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 You could try Upullit. They charge the same price for a size, regardless of make or condition. If they are attached to wheels (that you don't want) they take a deposit and you can have them removed at a garage next door- although it closes at lunchtime on Saturday and doesn't open on Sunday. cort16 1
Station Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Why is this Becker car radio going for nearly 3 grand? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BECKER-MEXICO-RETRO-7948-VINTAGE-CAR-RADIO-MODEL-BE-7948-/300978188120?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item4613b2af58 I have no doubt it sounds nice, 3 grand though? That's more than the total worth of every car I've owned, probably.
cort16 Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 There's a local tyre place doing part worn branded tyres (no wang-kings) for £150 a set of 4 fitted. Seems fair, the problem is the rears are staggered so I need 265/275's on the back and 245's on the front. If they can cobble together a set for 150 fitted I recon I'll be happy as I should get £80 or so for the old wheels and tyres.
Sigmund Fraud Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Why is this Becker car radio going for nearly 3 grand? I have no doubt it sounds nice, 3 grand though? That's more than the total worth of every car I've owned, probably. They are highly sought-after, apparently. I guess that someone who can afford to pay 100K for a pristine 901 won't mind spending an extra 3K for period* ICE. Makes you wonder, though...
Station Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 It's a quite cheap plasticky look stereo with IPod input, it looks like one of those Chinese ones. No thanks, not in my (300 pounds) car.
Wilko220 Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Maybe there's an obscure law which says that anything vaguely automotive with the word "Mexico" on it has to be ludicrously overpriced.

Richard Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Don't listen to Jeremy Vine and Steve Wright! That reminds me of the old Tommy Cooper line about telling the doctor it hurts when I do this, and the doctor says "don't do it then". A DAB radio is the way to go- either a head unit or a Pure Highway.
Station Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Is it rule to sell banded steel wheels for more than they cost to get banded? 40 quid wheels, 40 quid per wheel for banding and powder coating. Sell for 300 quid (without tyres).
garbaldy Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Since there is mucho hateness towards german cars on here would an audi reserection(not 80s rave) thread be a waste of time? Cavcraft 1
Cavcraft Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Not at all, go for it. I think a lot of us (me included) go off on one about some makes/models of cars on here, but we shouldn't really. I'd like to read a thread on any car being resurrected. if it's a car some people don't like then they don't have to comment.
panhard65 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 This is bound to be a silly question but would it be a good idea to buy this http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/530732259.htm?ca=4_sI have got the chance of a long weekend in France and it would be rude not to take a trailer. I do like the look of the phase 1 renault 25 and this model looks like the V6 but has the good old reliable 2.1TD lump. I would probably sell it on again in a few months once it was uk registered etc. Is there a market for it ?. I would be looking at between 1 and 1.5k assuming it was any good with a full mot and uk headlamps
Mr Livered Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Of course! 700 a debattre = 500 euros = £450 or so... WCPGW?
nigel bickle Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 200 miles into Brittany from Caen. It looks a good purchase- if you're heading that way. Gotta wonder why he's selling now though (no mention of a CT etc). But, on balance I think it could be a good acquisition. Resale here won't be the easiest, but there's def a market (albeit small) Pics please....
Station Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 That's what I was thinking, they're bad enough selling over here but with LHD etc. They're nice cars though and I would anyway.
Station Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 What year did the news catch on that it's cheaper to go to Europe to buy a car than in the UK, which resulted in 'hordes' of new car buyers going over to France to buy a new car? It only seems like a few years ago, but remember there was quite a stir for a while when the papers got hold of it. Junkman 1
panhard65 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I am doing the plymouth roscoff crossing going to stay in Brittany so this is on my way which is handy. I don't expect to make a profit but it's always handy to find out if anyone would want it other than me. The people I am going to stay with are going to ring tonight and find out more including if he will take 500 euro which is where I see it unless it is really good. I have got a pair of righthand drive lights for one of these that I have had for years waiting for an excuse to use them Junkman 1

Junkman Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Wotz wiff this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-25-TXI-Multi-valve-/271288291314 It's in Chorley, which means you don't have to spend £££££ just to end up in a place where the beer is worse.
panhard65 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Well the renner 25 idea has failed the bloke has gone and sold it. The white one is a phase 2 and they weren't a very successful facelift in my opinion. Being a multivalve is another downside as well. I had a few of them back in the 90's and every one cracked it's head. Better keep searching Leboncoin and find something to bring home now I have the other half's approval
phil_lihp Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 The main thing standing between the 220 and another MOT pass is a cracked windscreen. Is it realistically possible to take one from a scrapper or is there a 99.9% chance of breaking it when its removed?
trigger Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Have you not got windscreen cover on your insurance?, if you have for £75 you might as well claim, it doesn't affect your policy.
phil_lihp Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Alas not, that was my first enquiry. Cheap TPFT only so no bells and whistles!
