I'm bored, so I thought I'd have a looky on the DVLA website to see if my old Escort Cabby is still taxed. I sold it last year around about this time, found the letter from DVLA saying records have been changed etc while having a clear out. This is what I found:

Date of Liability 26 05 2012 Date of First Registration 20 10 1993 Year of Manufacture 1993 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1796cc CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type PETROL Export Marker N Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour BLUE Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

So, does this mean that monkey-balls who i sold it to has wrapped it up, or just not bothered retaxing it?

Odd one this...

1985 merc 190e cosworth model with self levelling suspension.

Trying to get a clean mot pass so I can sell it so fixing the advisories, one of which was suspension pipes corroded

So... I had to cut the pipe to get a socket on to the fitting as a ring spanner and brake pipe spanner wouldn't touch it

To my surprise, there was what looked like a welding rod inside the pipe, I checked the other end and the other pipe and both are the same

My summary is that the standard 3/16ths bore is too big and they put this rod in as a restrictor so the accumulators don't get a sudden rush of fluid on the first bump in the road

Anyone have any knowledge of this?

I did something really daft earlier, I accidentally spilled 1/2 a litre of gearbox oil all over the car's otherwise unmarked cloth seats. Fiddlesticks!

Any ideas on how to get it out? Industrial hand wipes are making only very superficial progress (and yes that is how retarded I am)

Hard to tell. Stuff just comes up as Unlicenced on the DVLA when you scrap it, there's no Scrap marker like there is an Export one.

I'd say in these times it's probably scrapped as it's much harder to keep a car untaxed with all the plethora of mail the DVLA will send you and all the SORN fines you'll get. However, it might have changed hands so many times that they've lost track.

If it's SORN, you get a "SORN not due" or "SORN Expired" message on that same line.

Look under the seats, can you see metal pins folder over on the edge of the trim? You should be able to unfold these and lift/pull the cloth off whole, wang it in the washer perhaps or just soak it overnight in something mild to start with.

If you use industrial cleaner you'll probably just swap a bad stain for a mild stain and an awful smell.

I'd be looking at an iron (not too hot) and lots of paper. Ideally you would want to get the covers off and wash them as per Pillock's advice. You might end up having to replace the foam.

What does it show if the car's had private plates put on it? Does the original reg just return a "this vehicle's details cannot be found"?

Nipped down to the public house at lunchtime.

More for a cultural exchange than the ale that they sell.

Anyhoo, chap comes in with a bizarre story of a broken autobox in his Range Rover.

Apparently his most recent squeeze nipped down to give our hero a blowie whilst driving & knocked it into Park.

I am a tad sceptical about this, as I would have assumed that you'd need to push in a button or overcome

some other kind of interlock. I find it difficult to believe that it's possible to move the lever from D, though N,

R & into P using only the back of your head or even less likely your cock.

Anyone have first hand knowledge?

I could be talking out of my arse (the very same arse that I use to apply my handbrake).

Depends on the Rangie. My Merc could in theory be quite easily pushed from D into P as there is no safety button. Pretty sure the 4-speed auto has a button, but no idea about anything P38 or later.

I did ask my wife if she fancied testing the Rangie bloke's theory but she told me to piss off.

Correct. Because the original registration could be (but very rarely does get) issued to another car.

Here's a question, this little Honda Civic I've bought has been on a private plate since around 1978-79, the current owner is currently doing a plate transfer to remove it, what's the likely hood of it going back to it's original number plate again, especially if you know what the original plate is?

Is buying a 2nd hand prefab garage on ebay, dismantling it, transporting it back home and rebuilding it a good idea or a bad idea?

very heavy.

often easier to cut bolts with grinder and replace.

number all the bits before you disassemble.

asbestos roof can be an issue.

That'll explain why my dad's old car vanished off the database a month after he sold it then.

Long shot but does anyone know where I'd get an auto gearbox filter for a GM180 gearbox as fitted to S2 Rover SD1's?

My SD1 won't shift )gear) and I'm going to try a fluid change but can't seem to find anywhere selling a filter. Even Rimmend brothers don't have one.

+1

much heavier than you expect (even if you expect them to be very heavy) and generally it's not worth bothering trying to undo the bolts if they are the usual crosshead coachbolts with square nuts, just run through them with a slitting disk and spend about a tenner on new ones.

I'd have thought pretty slim as that'll be on paper records, certainly it's not likely to happen automatically. If it's all computerised it's much more likely, it happens by default.

If you trundle down to the DVLA office and give your reason for wanting it to (I assume you want the history to tally?) it might be more likely, but it relies on you catching someone on a good day.

I know you can transfer private plates from car to car but can you transfer the original non private plate of a car onto another one?

I've googled it and found conflicting info but I'm thinking it must be possible because my mk5 Astra had a private plate put on by the previous owner when the car was a year old then when he traded it in and took the plate off and the car got its original reg back, I bought it and when the v5 came back it said in the special notes "non transferable registration mark" but the v5s of any other cars I've had don't say anything like that.

Also, why do some cars get their original reg back when they have a private plate removed whilst others get a different one from the original?

I have used Toluene on oily greasy clothes and it removes 80% of the stains. I used to get it from my local chemist in 5 litre containers. ONLY use it in very well ventilated areas as it smells similar to thinners.

Brian.

I have witnessed an especially unpleasant 'incident' involving that stuff and can only advise to keep VERY well away from it.

Hydraulic clutch question - clutch pedal depressed and clutch disengages as expected. If the pedal is held down, the clutch starts to engage. This is followed by no pedal resistance. The resistance then returns almost with a pop.

I'm assuming I have a knackered cylinder but is there anyway to tell if it's the master or the slave or could it be some other problem?

I have a horrible feeling that's the case, The owner rang me today to say he's posted the plate transfer form off to Swansea so it will be a few weeks before I can collect this Civic, and it's now likely to be given a new number, I'm starting to regret paying so much for it now.

Always change both of them.

Yes, you can.

Had a customer do this years ago. He bought a new Polo to replace his virtually identical Polo but didn't want people to know so transferred the plate from the first Polo which was something like T855 JFR to his slightly newer Polo.

Strange but true.

All cherished plates started life as standard issue until DVLA started selling them in around 1990.

There is a bolt that I had to cut apart to get it out of the Lancia's rear suspension. Its a fairly standard thing with what looks like a standard thread and a blank section on it for about an inch and a half from the head of it.

The only problem is that I am having a devil of a job finding a new one and it's starting to hold me up. Where the hell do you get these sort of things or is it likely I will have to get one made?

I really don't know, I have always managed to get the bolts out without destroying them on my previous cars.
