My 1.6 petrol 305 seems to have developed a bit of a rattle but I can't quite tell where it's coming from. Any suggestions as to what it could be? It drives fine and isn't down on power or anything like that, sometimes it goes away or is less noticeable. I loosened the alternator belt to see if it was the alternator making the noise but it felt smooth enough to turn by hand so probably not that.

Have you checked the valve clearances recently? Sounds a bit like mine when it needed a cam.

My mate has a Kangoo, which has just intermittently lost second gear. You simply can't move the lever into the 2nd gear position.

Sounds like one of the interlock detents is jamming in position. I don't know the specific gearbox, but there must be interlocks between the selector shafts, and if one is jammed, you may get this effect.

As I am running on veg, from the convenient Indian supermarket at 16 for 20 litres what are the legalities, or not, of doing this ?

Not legal.

However, if you process your own fuel from waste cooking oil then it is legal for you to use up to 2500 litres per year without paying duty on it. You must keep a log of the amounts you are processing and using.

If you get caught with it in your tank then it will of course be waste oil that you have processed yourself and there is currently no proper record of this as that is the first batch you have made and this is your maiden journey....

It doesn't have to be waste vegetable oil, just "biofuel", which new vegetable oil is.

I've been burning veg oil for over 10 years and not had any issues with the law/HMRC. Who's going to check if you have recorded every litre?

Posted

I don't believe it does have to be used oil.

Processing into biofuel is the legal terminology, for many cars the "processing" includes taking the lid off the bottle and pouring it into the tank.

When I swapped to the new 850 the insurance stung me for over £100. The Admin fee was £25 of that, which I grudge because I did the admin myself, and £78 was added to the premium. That's more than half of the original annual premium added on to drive the same car.

I paid the extra, but I'm still annoyed about it. I'm seriously considering cancelling the policy and moving to Direct Line, who have quoted £161 for the year.

Is that likely to put some kind of black mark on my record or bugger up my NCD?

Posted

You will lose any NCD that is less than a complete year - ie if you are changing half way through your policy year, the previous six months NCD will be lost and when you restart with Direct Line you will go back to however many full years you had at the start of this policy year.

No other ill effects - its often worth sacrificing a part-year NCD when decent savings are to be had.

Nowt illegal with using SVO (straight veg oil) rather than WVO (waste veg oil). Often WVO is better as once treated it's thinner due to being broken down by the cooking process so is closer to diesel's viscosity & causes less fuel system related issues.

Good to hear. Having done 85% of the agreed mileage limit on the GSA in 4 months..

good chance they will stiff you a good few quid in cancelation charges or some mumbo jumbo...might be best to let it run then go elsewhere at the end of the year

I have decades of NCD anyway. I'm not too bothered about saving money, though it would be nice of course, but Halifax are massively taking the piss increasing the premium by 50% to change to the same model of car part way through the year.

Any idea what a 2005 kia picanto 1.0 auto in good condition with 40k on the clock is worth.

I may have acquired one from an elderly relative and not quite sure what to do with it.

Currently driving it up the m6 and it drives fine.

Parky has/had an "obsession" with the MK1 Picanto not long ago.

Oddly enough I have recently developed an obsession with the first Kia Picanto.

Stick it on Faceache for £750 then be prepared to accept £650.

Or put it on Gumtree and be prepared to accept a Nutri Bullet, a Dell Laptop full of Malware and £40.50 cash.

Anyone speak Italian?

I could use Google translate if I had to, but I would prefer it to sound somewhat understandable.

Posted

I can.

Well, I could, 20 years ago when I was at school.

Now all I can do is swear in French.

Battery?

I seem to recall these things not lots of good volts to work correctly.

Overhauling the back brakes on the Mondeo, they are drums. A fitting kit with new springs is a fiver. Worth getting?

I'm not sure about the setup on these, but if your luck is anything like mine some replacement cylinders might be worth a shot.

Whenever I take a drum off the cylinders start leaking as soon as anything is touched.

Fitted and bled a pair of new cylinders already. Pair of shoes were only a tenner so it’s daft not to while I’m at it.

Windows will need resetting after battery has been disconnected, keep pressing the down button if it's dropping a mm at a time.

Where are you - I've a volt meter you can test the battery with although I don't remember them being particularly sensitive to voltage.

Keys do stop working randomly, check all the doors to make sure a seatbelt or something isn't obstructing them when closed - it's smart enough to know there's a problem and be an arse about locking.

Put a new battery in the remote fob too.

Can you lock unlock all the doors from the drivers door lock?

Climate control ECU fault codes can be read with a combination of buttons - the how to is on the net.

Oh crap! That does sound like water where it's not supposed to be.

You haven't moved the switch that locks the other windows?
