Why was it changed? The suggestion was made by a member that calling it the stupid question amnesty implied it was only for stupid questions, and renaming it would make it clearer what the thread was for. This seemed pretty reasonable.

Now I ask, why do you (whoever you may be) care that it has been renamed?

It wasn’t called stupid question thread. It was called stupid question amnesty - which gave a clue to the jovial nature in which “stupid” was intended.

Why fuck about with something that wasn’t broken at the behest of a single person?

Because it wasn’t a single person and it’s the same thread with the same content, just a slightly different title?

I’m genuinely jealous of people who’s only problem in life is a slightly altered heading on an Internet car forum thread.

Stop trying to upset the MODS or they'll  rearrange your deck chairs.

It's far from my only problem - but that doesn't mean I don't care.  If the majority feel it they are unable to cope with the word "stupid" in the title of a long running thread on here then fair enough I suppose, but I'm not convinced that's the case.

BTW I wouldn't have found the need to be posting on this at all if someone with equally too much time on their hands hadn't seen the need to fuck about with something that was working fine.

I can assure you that I wish it was my only problem in life!

A couple of points to ponder.

It's been told to me that the thread isn't my private property, fair enough but maybe I have a little pride of ownership in having a 600 page thread that's been popular and ongoing for many years? Would it of been totally unreasonable to of been asked or consulted about it first? Judging by the responses on here the majority opinion was to leave it well alone and even yourself posted a sticky about new members reading before posting so it's pretty obvious what the thread was about. I don't want to fall out with anyone on here regardless of what colour their user name is but is it really grown up for a mod to answer back with "maybe this site isn't for you" or "feel free to start your own blog" when questioning a decision ? Maybe I've read the rules wrong and contrition isn't in the admins vocabulary but even you must realise that you've made an error of judgment and misread the thoughts of not just myself but other posters as well. I honestly don't want to cause trouble and would never consider myself to be Conan the Librarian keyboard warrior and want nothing more than a happy Autoshite which I think is something we can all agree on. In my many years on here I've made friends and had laughs and car deals with many members both on and off the forum, yourself included. I have always appreciated the camaraderie and was genuinely in tears at the heartfelt messages of support I got of other members on here when my mum died and would never want to see a forum where we fall out over not thinking through a decision or respecting another's opinion. Anyway that's my final word on the matter. Can we all just be friends now?

We are all friends, mate. Opinions are like arseholes, we’ve all got them and most of them stink, we just have to try and understand that (as a group) we aren’t always going to agree.

I still want Liverpool to lose tonight though.

That's something we fucking agree on!

It was constantly drummed into me, as a child that "It's not all about you".

Sometimes people need to heed this pearl of wisdom occasionally. I know I do.

Then again, if everyone did maybe FaceBook (or inset social media of choice) probably wouldn't exist.

Tell me - am I going to get utterly shafted, tax-wise, on a 2003 Subaru Forester 2.0 Turbo?

CO2 emissions are rated at 232g/km, and it's Euro 3 standard.

I don't really pay attention to this sort of variable tax rate eejitry, as since the Great Alfa Disaster of 2013 I've deliberately eschewed any vehicle this side of the Millennium Bug scare.

However. If all pans out with my Fairy Chodfather on Saturday, I may be thinking of procuring something slightly more modern.

(Okay, that sounds wrong - see the Datsuncog thread for details of what's transpired over the past 24 hrs)

I'm currently paying the old 'higher rate' of £280 a year or whatever for the sLag. Is a Forester going to be significantly more? By that, I mean more than double. DVLA won't tell me the VED rate without entering the V5 number, for some tortuous reason.

A tidy-looking non-farmer example has come up locally, cheap and with the timing belt, water pump, brakes, tyres etc all just replaced.

I'm interested.

Also - if I were to view it, is there anything I really need to know about these? Mrs DC's horsey set loves them as being comfy and bombproof, that's why she suggested one. I know they're a bit thirsty, but I don't do many miles so that's not a massive concern.

Is it worth me:

A) buying a banger which looks like a decent car behind the neglect?

B) buy something for top money (for me) and mollycoddle it forever

Or

C) don't worry about the above as I'll probably sell them both shortly.

Price difference is £700...

^^^ Cheers for that - not too heinous, then.

I tend to buy my tax in six month blocks, because skint, hence thinking it's around £140 twice a year.

Planning on giving blokey a bell at lunchtime, and seeing if I can view tonight.

As long as the insurance isn't horrific... checking that now.

EDIT: okay, it's not looking overly awful - about £100 more than I'm paying for the Laguna. I could wear that.

Is it true that a Transit plated in the UK for 3.5 tonnes is rated for 4 tonnes elsewhere in Europe? Someone (here?) told me it was and I can't remember who. I'm having a twitter argument with a copper and I don't want to look more of a prick than I am.

I do miss the days of buying a car that had tax on it. Picking one up that had 9 months tax on it was like winning the lottery .

Pre 2006, so the maximum is not the £550 band. At current rates that forester is £315 per year. www.totalcarcheck.co.uk is a useful site that consolidates all this information (does require a free account to see it all).

Belts cost a lot to replace. So ideally get one that has been done. Most at this age are playing cambelt roulette due to the costs.

Pretty darn bullet proof power-trains.

Won't be any more complex electronically than your Laguna really. Mechanically there is a bit more as its AWD, but its built tough and pretty simple/straightforward.

Interiors are pretty grim. But then its Japanese.

Get friendly with your local fuel station as you'll be going there a lot. Expect high teens, low twenties if you're running this around town.

2003 Subaru Forester Xt

2.0 turbo petrol (same engine as impreza) 4 wheel drive

121k with full service history, all old vosa certificates (English mot) and a full printout of old mots to back up mileage .

Motd to October

Very clean and tidy car only downside is the driver seat bolster on the leather part is a bit worn.

Last month the car had new discs, pads, front tyres, timing belt & water pump kit.

Drives and pulls really well & everything works as it should

Heated seats, elec sunroof, Windows & mirrors, cruise control, alloy wheels, tinted windows etc. Looking £1195 ono, no swaps or time wasters, Text if interested, Belfast area

£1195 ono

Sounds fairly good to me...

I'd be using it mostly on motorway runs, not really urban. It's unusual if I put more than 10k on a car annually.

I'll not lie, I like it.

Grim interior? It has cupholders! Given that a few years ago I was driving a Polo Fox, this yoke looks like a Bentley!

EDIT: Waiting on the vendor to message me back re. a viewing. If it's as good as it appears (no towbar, so hopefully hasn't been used as a surrogate tractor as the majority of them appear to be) and a nice enough drive, then the money from TAZ and KAZ should provide a reasonable deposit while I rustle up the balance.

If there was ever a car that should be here, it's that one. I photographed it a couple of years back at Shanklin station and thought how nice it was considering the HUGE mileage it had done.

Wow.  It's not too far from me although I can't do anything about the car I'm afraid.

Nevertheless:

I dont see how. Whats on the plate is whats on the plate and thats it.

Also, I dont know for certain with other EU countries, but suspect they are the same, but in France its very rare for vans and light trucks etc to be over 3.5tons GVW due to licence categories. Nobody here has automatic entitlement to over 3.5ton vehicles like in UK.

My brother in laws Mascott tipper is physically capable of being 6 tons GVW but is down rated to 3.5 tons so it can be driven by anyone.

I am looking for a car. It is driving me insane(er)!

What are the things to worry about on Volvo C70s? Same question for SAAB 9-3 convertibiles? Same again for Merc CLK 320 convertibles? There is what looks to be a nice Merc SLK 320 auto convert less than 1 mile from me, it's a 'T' reg and up for £2200. Is that over the top price wise?

They do make a transit plated to 4.2t not sure what if any the differences are. Obviously hideously unpopular here with tacho regs, operator licences etc

According to total car check it's £305 per year.
