Odd one, Aviva day insure is usually by far the best short term insurance provider. However they just won't insure my little AX. At first I thought potentially due to the salvage marker, but no, other cars with the same are fine.

Could it be because it was on someone's trade policy (and probably still is)? I've had all sorts of crud on their day insure yet this is the only one to cause problems.

I'm keeping an eye on a cheap local eBay listing, a Corsa C 1.4 in a fairly vile shade of metallic pink.  1.4 on a 2000 X plate, fairly good MOT history and current ticket til next year, 100k on the clock, thinking of it as a cheap doer-upper if the price stays low.  Not my cup of tea at all but viewing it as a quick turnaround and sell on if it can be fixed easily enough, a good wash and polish would help it straight away.

Only listed fault is an intermittent problem with it going into limp mode, only does it every few days apparently.  EML comes on as well, fault goes away again by itself.  Allegedly no codes produced.

Any thoughts on what it might be?

Vauxhalls of this era can put the EML on if the oil level is low (knock sensor triggered IIRC) but I'm not sure if it causes limp.

MOT fail on the Signum recorded as 2.2.B.1h Steering arm has relative movement at its fixings. I can't find much wrong other than a small amount of movement in what I would call the lower suspension arm. Is this what the tester is getting at? Also, he will have tested it under load, I checked it with the wheel off the ground.

I'd imagine the Leylands will hang about in TA units for a while longer, the government are still squeezing the pips and they're still squeaking.

Which thread is it with the epic welding round the roof of a camper with the high top lifted up? Have tried various google searches of the forum and drawn a blankety blank.

How does type approval work? Thinking long term but there's something I wouldn't mind at some point that you can only get in (IIRC) Japan, Aus, US/Canada.

If you're only importing one then I think it's SVA instead.

If someone advertises a car for 30K or best offer on ebay and I bung a bid of a tenner in, are they legally bound to let me have it for that if no-one tops my offer?

No. Even if you offer 29,999 they can reject it.

Are you referring to the make offer button? Best Offer has a lower limit of 40% of the advertised price.

Dextron III ATF is perfectly fine to use in place of Dextron II right as it is backwards compatiable?

I think I am the guilty one here, half way down page five and the lesson is don't investigate things.

Do the Corsa C and Corsa D models (eg 1.4 petrol)  have the same gearboxes?

Internal ECU faults can do this too - especially on this sort of age Vauxhall. Usually get a whole random set of codes popup. Codes will be produced, but are being checked with a cheap, generic code scanner. ScanMyOpel app on android, ds150e, opcom, etc should read it.

Contemplating changing this fuel pressure valve on the Aldi. There are two hex sections, which one should be used to undo & do up the valve? The inner one looks too narrow to get any normal spanner in. Or do you undo the big one, then the sensor moves out a bit, so you can undo the inner?

Not got the replacement part to hand yet. Hopefully will arrive by Friday!

Can't answer your specific query, but I ought to remind you that the fuel system needs to be de-pressurised before you attempt to do any work on it !

At 1000bar, diesel can do some serious damage to the human body...

I believe when you turn the ignition off, the system depressurised through the leak off point on the injectors.

Bumping this because a search says the reason for 2.2.B.1h is track rod ends, but a quick check on mine and I can't find any movement. Any suggestions please? I want to fix this but obviously don't want to be ordering parts I don't need.

I would ask the tester as I had one very similar yesterday. My customer had the car tested and the descriptions of what was actually wrong were way out (excessive free play on steering) All I could find was a worn inner track rod joint. They also failed it of a worn sliding bush on the front macperson strut. No idea what that was supposed to be though.

Old gas strut disposal? has "observe disposal instructions" printed on it.

Does that mean I just watch the guy at the tip lob it into the general waste or are they going to try and rob me of £5.00 each strut for hazardous waste disposal like they do with tyres?

I think it means don't throw it on a fire as it might exploderate.

Changing the timing belt on 1994 205 1.7 non-turbo XUD.

The water pump supplied with the kit incorporates the side of the timing belt cover, which is the design I'm familiar with. The old pump has no side on it. Does it matter? The timing belt covers do have the space to accommodate the new pump.

I wouldn't have thought so. My 205 (XUD7T) had the pump with the cover incorporated. So long as it all fits nicely and pumps water I don't think it would matter.

Chuck it in the dustbin. The sides of the bin wagon are plenty thick if it explodes when crushed. Which it won't if it was still charged you wouldn't be changing it.

Many argue it is not truly backwards compatible and there are various tales of borked gearboxes. I wouldn't risk it.

Yeah I didn't in the end, if it is truly backwards compatible why would they make the old specification stuff still?

Do the fuzz ever buy unmarked cars secondhand?

I was just putting some fuel in, and it's a supermarket near the county police HQ. Often get their motors filling up.

On the next pump over was a 63 plate BMW and a uniformed officer putting in fuel. Now 63 plate struck me as a bit old for something that will do mega-miles - but what was also odd was that the numberplate was on squiffy, and on the bottom of the plate had the name of a local Ford dealer across it like they'd sold it.

Deffo unmarked car though - the light on the top of the dash pointing out through the windscreen, and when I ran it through TotalCarCheck it comes back as over 3 years old, no MOT status available, no tax status available.

I went past a BMW estate last week on a 10 plate. As I went past doing a bit too much over the limit I thought to myself the old bill wouldn't have anything that old. How wrong was I when the blue lights came on. I will say that the copper who pulled me was probably the nicest one I have ever met. I got so lucky and let off even though I had hit 98 whilst he was following me. Let off with a warning to keep it under 90 !. So watch out for a black 10 plate BMW on the M5 near Taunton
