Cars that don't exist but should

Recommended Posts

So nearly there, however, having been driving one of those this week it has too many gewgaws and push-button buttons for me and my feet don't fit round the pedals.

A brand new car with no daft electrics that could be serviced by the home mechanic. If such a thing existed then I would seriously consider buying one. Always fancied a new car but I'm not wasting any money on these newfangled white goods as I want something I can maintain myself indefinitely.

Lada Niva?

Hahaha.

Nivas are indeed available new but have a mixture of GM and Lada electrical stuff on them. No thanks. Have had a few of them anyway. Great cars with the original Weber copy carb thrown away and a proper Weber in its place. Had a couple of later ones but both had electrical faults.

A proper coupe MX-5 with a nice hatch and low, flat boot floor. Just like a less bollocks MGB GT.

THIS.

They do the RF with the folding hardtop and flying buttresses but a proper Coupe would be less complex and probably more elegant.

A proper Skoda that's not a VW in a frock. I suppose Dacia fill that gap but it's just not the same.

Also, a new Saab.

The current merc g Wagen - why not one with caterpillar tracks on the rear end like in the 30’s/ s class 4 door convertible- what are modern tyrants supposed to parade about in?

Posted

Estate versions of mid-size cars.

The shape is roughly vertical at the rear so they obviously didn't feel that they needed to make an estate version, but the boot is too small for a proper-size dog to be comfortable in.

The current Volvo V40 doesn't deserve its V designation - it's a hatchback, not an estate. I've got a Merc B-Class courtesy car at the moment and I really like it but I'd want an estate... Which would force me up to a C-class, which I suppose might well be the point.

I hadn't consciously noticed this until Sierraman mentioned it above but the mk 3 Cavalier clearly started this.

Two on my list to Santa would be

Mazda made these.

Renault 4. Not a new version or a remodelled retro styled hatch based on the Clio but the original.

Dig out the tooling and crank up manufacture of 845cc and 1108cc engines and we’re done here

Rover SD1 Estate.  That was my favourite car in the Haynes collection.  I don't think it's on display now but they made 3 prototypes and canned the idea.

I think that was a massive mistake.  It was magnificent.

EDIT:  Apparently it's at the British Motor Museum now:

I took this photo at the British Motor Museum in June 2016 when I was in the area attending SF16.

They'd have been obliged to also make a saloon version with an impractically small boot and a boot opening just large enough for a half pound bar of dairy milk. Because marketing.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.  Especially if it had the V8...

With the Moggy Traveller, why would you need a modern incarnation? The originals aren't exactly hard to find and keep in good condition, given proper care. And few other cars can bring such driving pleasure that is all too lacking these days than those overgrown go-karts.

All bigger load space than lifestyle* C Class , A4, 3 series touring etc.

If you want bigger there's the Passat, Superb, Mondeo, E Class, A6 etc plus the smaller inside but bigger outside ones like V90, Insignia, 5 Series etc all with plenty of space for Fido.

With performance versions with up to 600 bhp and 4x4 "AllRoad" versions of most, I'd say as far as estate cars go, we've never had it so good!

No, a mustang would be a mustang. A Panda isn’t a 500, I don’t want some shitty crap aimed at men with small penises, I want the best car design ever bar none, updated for the present day but still RWD, a Capri mk4.......

That’s always been there, the Haynes one (SHP 549R) is still at the museum but in long-term storage.

Proper car derived vans rather than the horrid Postman Pat stuff.I loved my Astravans, they sold gazillions of all models.Fuck knows why Vauxhall stopped making them.

At least partly because motoring journos like Clarkson used to sneer at anything "with a van in the range".

Subaru BRZ but with 4x4 Impreza turbo running gear.

A big coupe from ford or vauxhall. Not a Mustang or Monaro, more in the mould of the vauxhall Royale. More grand tourer than muscle car. Like an insignia or Mondeo coupe if that makes sense.

More 3 door soft roaders. Look at the Evoque. A 3 door Kuga would be horrible like a big trainer yet sell really well. Not saying I want one, more spirit of this thread "missed opportunity"

A Roomster VRS. I find ours both handle quite well, the extra wheelbase over the fabia makes a difference. Certainly could handle more shove. But perhaps the market would consist of me alone, and only after depreciation has done it's bit..

More shooting brakes and breadvans please, the Z3M coupe is beyond pretty IMO and look at this:

A few manufacturers are referring to estates as shooting brakes, like Mercedes with the CLA estate. It's just not a shooting brake, it's an estate with a sloping hatch. There's a very definite line in my eyes. Must be three door, sporty, and an almost vertical hatch.

It has already been designed, it just needs someone to make it. The Gordon Murray T25/T27. Brilliant engineering and one of the best solutions for urban traffic yet it still remains just a design study. I know Yamaha are supposed to be bringing a version into production, but I haven't heard anything about that for years.

My stock reply to this type of question:

Sierra Sapphire V6 Ghia

Neither the 2.0 Ghia or the Cosworth could compete with the 3-series.

Can't believe we've not yet had the Rover 75 Coupe...

I'm sure it's been discussed at length elsewhere but for those that don't know, one bloke liked the idea so much he built one in his shed, and it just looks incredible;
