If I could learn one skill it would be welding. The fabrication there is fantastic, keep em coming, like reading stuff like this.

Yeah defo!!! I’m certainly open to any innovative ideas!

I asked.

He was a bit of a knob about it to be honest.

Looks like you've been battling on regardless though.  Top work Monsuir B

Seeing how much welding this old heap needs makes me feel much better about the monies I’ve spent having my W124 welded.

Inspirational thread, keep the updates coming.

One of these things just drove past the pub I'm sitting outside, crawling up a steep hill making a fabulous noise. The bonnet badge had been altered to read 'G O D'. Lovely stuff

I can't wait to be able to go bombing about in mine. There's a real knack to making decent semi-smooth progress, you 'operate' it more than drive it! I want to become a skilled operator who never ends up in 2nd gear on the open road.

One drove past the office yesterday lunchtime actually - a Mk1 LWB with a crew cab and a beavertail.  And presumably 4..236 powered.  75bhp for 7.5 tonnes - doesn't bear thinking about really.

Looks like we're safely over Bechers Brook and into the final furlong, weldage progress for sure.

That's the shit cleaned from the front, presumably just the shit to be cleaned from the living quarters and the MDF work can start.

Seriously?

Mercedes managed to get 77bhp from the 2.3 OM.601 in my van, and that's "leisurely" by modern standards.

Know what you mean though, there's a real knack to shuffling something old, heavy and with limited power along. Especially doing it without having to thrash the living daylights out of the poor thing.

Especially when to the outside observer, from the windowline upwards you are the picture of calm.

Meanwhile you're doing a Michael Flatley on the pedals and going for gears quicker than DSG could ever hope for in an attempt to keep forward motion.

I love the engine in mine, its its best feature I reckon. I'm not going to muck about with it except to put some new exhaust gaskets on and change the oil! I've even got a nice shiny Perkins badge to go on when its looking a bit more ship shape.

75 bhp is irrelevent- torques are what we need to kno

Posted

The torque figure for the 4.236 was actually surprisingly low for a "lorry" engine (around 185 lb-ft IIRC).  The Phaser has shedloads more torque.

Completely different type of engine really though.  The 4.236 is a low-revving slogger (flat out at 2,800rpm) - similar in fact to the engine in Arthur Foxhake's 508D, both in terms of size and power output.  An OM.601 will rev to 4,000 plus, and makes its peak power and torque at commensurately higher revs.

I need to get my handbook out for the 6247, I can remember it made 100 bhp+ at about 3500 rpm but no idea on the torque figures.

Posted

I seem to recall the torque figure for the 6.247 was similar to, if not slightly lower than the 4.236.  Also a 50-series thus equipped loses its centre passenger seat as the engine cover sticks out a lot further into the cab.  They do sound nice though.

Wonder if a 6.354 could be shoehorned in?

For some reason when I saw this I thought of you.

I can't wait to see this parked in a farmers field next to the M6 advertising discount furniture.

Forgot to mention I saw the 50-Series beavertail again yesterday, this time at close quarters and with a Mk6 Fiesta on the back (still no photo though as I was cycling at the time).  Defo sounded like a 4.236.

They're just huge, mind they probably aren't much heavier!

The 6.354 is ~half a tonne.

Progress has slowed a little on this, I think AB was struggling in the heatwave as the Dodge is too tall to go in his workshop! Hopefully will have more to report soon.

There’s actually one of these parked in a field next to the M6 SB between 19 and 18. It’s been there years, since 2001 at least. The next field has a Ford Cargo that’s been there just as long and it’s pretty much falling to bits.

Presumably with a low power engine, weight saving in the accommodation dept. will be a priority. MDF is to be avoided due to its weight and toxicity being close to depleted uranium. Maybe foam-core cladding could be investigated.

I had a beavertail one of these and there was no discernible difference in "performance" with a car on the back or without.  I don't think Bo11ox' choice of décor is going to affect anything much in that department.

I'm at green gathering ATM. There are a few Dodge trucks here, I'll try and get some fotoes if I'm allowed permission.

Lot of rules here.

Hippies love to opt out of society's rules, in favour of inventing their own and enforcing them stringently.

After consulting a committee that never agree.
