Ford Mondeo Base - Sale aborted.

Evening all. Hopefully not trod on anyone's toes- keen to get it in the fold. First Mondeo I drove was a red 5dr base courtesy car from the Ford dealer I worked at.

Always wanted a 1.8 lx 4dr Panther black so obviously this is perfect.

I have more vehicles than I'm allowed so as usual a loan/sale is on cards.

red5, going in..

I feel the phrase "rehomed" is very appropriate for this rare species that is in a bit of a no man's land where a dodgy clutch would see it chucked or a minor parking bump would see it written off. Well played Mr B and red5!

I still think somebody near me has a grey 2.0 si saloon.

Yay. Insurance ruled me out in the end, after I got a pass from Ms Panda. Grr.

Anyone want to offload something pre '88 so I can get back to 'shiting?

They're NLA? Fuck, if I'd known that I would have grabbed them off this Mondeo before it was fragged.

Unusual to see an Aerostar in a scrapyard.

Fraid not, I'm crying inside, lol.

Hopefully that one didn't also have the mega rare non-yellowing headlights too!

2 questions...

1) in the ad the seller declared himself a "car guy" and this was a stop gap while his car was being sorted.... what was his car then?

You could never, ever guess.  I had to stifle my laughing!

2010 Vauxhall Insignia with a fucked gearbox.  Imagine?!

Costing him over £1200 to get it back on the road.  He should have just done the decent thing and invested that money into the mondeo, but there's no telling some people.

Hopping over this morning to pay his deposit.

Yeah.....but to be fair he probably used that exact phrase when telling his mates about the bloke he sold it to!

Autoshite: All your base are belong to us.

Your probably not far wrong tbh!

Autoshite’s collective base list:

There’s now two Mondeo base models, one hatch one saloon.

Sierra base

Capri base

Any others?

It's not a Ford, but my 1996 Laguna RN is pretty much the lowest spec available from Renault UK.

I know some European RNs were even more basic than mine, swapping the tacho on the instrument binnacle for a large analogue clock, but have yet to encounter a UK example with that level of miserliness.

Stepping up from the RN to my current green RT daily bestowed me with driver airbag, digital stereo display, map light, map pockets, a centre console box, front fogs, dual rear fogs, digital odometer and oil level gauge, colour coded bumpers and door mirrors, rear spoiler, aircon, alloys, sunroof, leather steering wheel and gearknob trim, flip-down sunglasses case, driver sunvisor pocket, delayed courtesy light switch-off, and plunger switches to operate the interior light on the rear doors. All of which the RN does without.

Going by the brochure, the only options the first owner ticked were metallic paint and a green-tinted sunstrip.

In a weird way, I kinda prefer the stripped down RN, which is probably why I can't bring myself to scrap it...

If I had infinite space, I'd have bought the Mk2 Sierra bASe that was for sale at an Essex dealer last year.  It was £795 in the end - red - and still pintosaurus powered despite that being superseded by the CVH engines.  It had a fuck off big clock where the rev counter should have been etc.

What I'm short of is space, not so much money.  Especially when you consider that these cars will never be cheaper.

Shame you couldn't get this for nothing.

FreebASing ftw.

Sorry. To be Base it must have no extra letters after the model designation.

I nominate this honey - the 316e.

Absolute Bavarian desolation. DIY windows, grey bumpers, mingebag cloth, 1.6 power* unit.

So miserable that the 'brochure' was just a one sided bit of shiny paper with your failure in life and your social standing laid bare.

Not even a special 316e boot badge, still badged an 'i'.

Look at this knob jockey trying to get 14 quid for this one. 'Brochure', not the car. He's had it a while.

Basey McBasington Mk3 Austin 1100.  Doesn't even have arm rests, let alone such luxuries as a radio or map pockets.  I don't think there's even a heated rear screen.

Odd as it was the lowest model available..;)

Letters after the model; doesn't count.

The name must be as basic and desolate as the trim level.

Sierra 1.6................just.......nothing there. A void in space.

You've never driven one then.. void in space describes it perfectly:)

Yeah I agree...it gives it that extra bleakness. It’s not even good enough for a letter, it’s only just managed to have an engine size....Sierra 1.6

Is base something that Ford still do to this day? The Mk4 Mondeo I part-own is an 'edge' which is pretty much poverty in the current line up, but compared to a Sierra base is full of ostentatious features, it would be like a Ghia X back then..

My Tempra Saloon is the most base specification Tempra available at the time.

It's also the only one left with MOT.

Isn't the beige BX in bASe flavour?

Posted

I'm sure they did an mk2 Cortina that was below base that a customer could buy, it was a fleet only base. Grim
