Terrible news. Having lost a close one to the same fate I know it's devastating for the family.

RIP Hendry and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I never met Greg, but it's abundantly clear that he was regarded with great affection by many. His enthusiasm for and knowledge of 1990s Fords was phenomenal, and could have been the basis of a great book.

Rest in peace.

What can I say that hasn't been already. AS won't be the same without him but I'm sure his memory will always live on with us.

Like most, I didnt know Greg personally but was genuinely shocked and saddened by the news.

He just always came across as a genuinely nice guy with an undeniable passion for cars and was a great asset to the forum.

RIP, and condolences to Greg's family and loved ones.

Greg I never got to meet you but feel we would have got on well. I truly hope you are at peace now.

You brought a passion for detail and a depth of knowledge to the forum that amazed many and was respected by all. I hope you've found the peace you were seeking. Chodspeed, Hendry.

Incredibly sad about what happened and missed by all of us. May your onward journey be safe and smooth. Rest in peace Greg

You’ll be greatly missed but never forgotten. I truly hope you are at peace now.

My greatest condolences to Greg’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

Jeez...heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Wherever you are bud, I hope crossing the bridge brought peace, and limitless old dealerships.

I don't know anyone with his encyclopedic knowledge of the defunct dealerships of Scotland, it was genuinely impressive. I'm going to miss wondering what gem he'd have thought of next on that thread.

Although I didn’t know Greg (Hendry) personally his passion and knowledge did shine through in his posts, his family and friends have my deepest condolences at such a difficult time.

As the darkness lifts, those closest to him will find comfort in the precious memories and sharing stories of adventures past.

RIP fella, chodspeed.

Jesus, missed the previous posts so didn't know before seeing this thread. Shocked to hear of Greg's passing, and like others have said his immense knowledge of dealerships and spec levels will be greatly missed. Hope he's up there looking at special edition Escorts in the great big Ford dealership in the sky.

In 10 years someone will be researching the history of Arnold Clark in Scotland or the history of (insert defunct garage here) dealership font and it's applications thereof and will hit upon ALL the information they need and more. All written by one guy, called Hendry.

Ill miss your posts buddy, be at peace now, driving your rust free locally registered Escort in the sky!

Rest in peace Greg. Hendry the man of legendary knowledgeable posts. Thank you for sharing and my condolences to your family.

Thank you for all the posts, Hendry. We never spoke but I was always impressed by the depth of your knowledge and attention to detail.

As many have said a highly regarded son of this parish, RIP mate. Thoughts with friends and family.

I hope wherever you are, you've found somewhere you're happy. I want to thank you for all the invaluable insight you provided myself and many others over the years with your unrivalled passion for Scottish dealerships and various cars, new and old. RIP Greg.

Genuinely shocked and saddened in equal measures to hear this. I was always amazed by his in-depth knowledge of trim levels and the like, and mildly reassured that there was someone even more of a spec geek than I was.

Rest In Peace.

I've only been on AS for around a month but in that short time reading Hendry's comments seemed a knowledgable chap and had an eye for detail, a one of a kind and a good egg. My thoughts are with his loved ones.

A man with knowledge well beyond his years, a tragic loss to his family, friends and our community.

Sincerest condolences to those he held dear.

The absolute master at ultrageek walls-of-text, nearly all of which I read. Particularly when it was about car specifications. Especially then.

Here's to you, matey.

Never met you in person Mr Hendry...but always amazed at your recollection and detail when it came to your time in the motor industry. Living so close, your untimely passing has hit me hard, and in the last 24 hours ive thanked my lucky stars for what i have and nearly lost(due to my own stupidity). U even made my cry ffs!! So wherever you are mate....shine bright, find that holy grail Ford Escort and covet it. And look down on your baby and guide them to be the best they can. But on a lighter note...i'll bet Arnie Shark is keeping a low profile up there in case he bumps into you lol. Sleep tight Greg...you were cherished more than you realised. RIP

Hendry, you will be missed by everyone here on the beige forum. R.I.P

Greg,

I know I’ve already posted but as the day has gone by, I find myself continually returning to this thread.

It’s nothing but a tragedy how your circumstances conspired to leave you in the worst possible position from which you could see no escape.

Many people say suicide is a cowardly way out but on that, I’m afraid I call bullshit...you obviously cared immensely for your daughter as well as your parents, and to do what you felt you had but no choice to do must have taken immense courage on your part.

I never had the privilege to meet you in person but, no doubt in common with many of us in this community, I felt a strong bond of friendship with you and only wish there was some way to let you know just how sorely you’ll be missed by many, many people indeed.

You’ll be in my thoughts for many years to come, mate.

Like many others on AS I had never met or spoken to Hendry but I always found his postings fascinating and informative.

It is always a tragedy when someone is overcome by their troubles the one small consolation is they can trouble him no more.

So sorry to read this. I always enjoyed Greg's threads on old Scottish dealers, esp uncle Arnies. As others have said, his threads were full of passion for a subject he had a huge interest in. I will miss them. In fact, I was thinking about Greg over the last few days as we have been in & out of one of Arnies VW branches. Whilst sitting in there, I was thinking ' I wonder what tales Greg has on this place'

Condolences to all his family.

I never know what to say in these circumstances except the obvious.

Condolences to Hendry's family and friends, RIP Greg.

"Hendry", as we knew him, joined the old car community that is Autoshite on the Wednesday 27th March 2013, the exact same day that BMW announced the price (£35000) of its forthcoming new i3 due to enter production in November that year, and Nissan's Sunderland plant commenced production of the phase two Leaf.

In his 1797 days (256 weeks and 5 days) on Autoshite, he displayed an erudition and attention to, and for, detail, that while it may well have been wordy and bordering on obsessional, it was tempered by the obvious, genuine interest and enthusiasm that was displayed in each one of his 2675 contributions across 742 separate subjects.

That is an average of 1.49 posts each and every day and if we can give him the benefit of assuming that he restricted himself to only 1000 words per Tolstoyesque post (he didn't!), that is 2.5 million words on subjects like Arnold Clark, Johnston's of Renfrew, Clanford etc.!

I've been buggering about with old cars and around the motor trade in west central Scotland for around about 40 years now and his detailed, encyclopaedic knowledge of the trade, traders and the people involved astounded me. And it was genuine *knowledge*, learned and retained, and not something found after a Google search and spouted as knowledge, like so many self appointed internet "experts" - Christ, Google would need to ask Hendry! The sort of stuff he knew, was interested in and happy to share isn't information that you can find on Google.

While his "holy grail", mark six Escort thread is the one that will probably be most remembered by most people, for me, and I suspect, most Central Scottish members, the one that sticks in my mind is his "FAO Scottish shiters" thread that extended to seven pages - ostensibly a request for information about the trade, but really an opportunity for Hendry to display his unbounded knowledge and enthusiasm for the machinations of the retail motor trade in Scotland. And he didn't have a rose tinted glasses approach either - he had a very realistic attitude with barely a good word to say about any of them!

If ever there is a publisher who considers that "A Concise History of the Scottish Motor Trade" is a worthwhile tome, all they need to do is print that thread.

Here, have a flavour:-

Oh on the subject of Inch Engineering VW - Abercromby had a VW branch in Stirling, when they folded it changed to Advantage VW Stirling, a couple of years back Inch acquired that too so as rml2345 says, Arnie acquired Inch recently so the Stirling VW is now Arnies too.

It's shocking, I have a VW and if I in the unlikely event wanted to put it into a non AC VW dealer I'd have to travel to Ingram in Ayr or Western in Edinburgh as they had their own VW branch in Greenock and Helensburgh, took over the aforementioned Inch in Bathgate and Stirling, Ingram in Paisley, Ian Skelly/Verve in Wishaw and Rutherglen and Lex VW Jordanhill and Merrylee (started out as Merrylee Motors, remember them?)

Most of the garages in Stirling are AC now, I remember SMT Vauxhall which when SMT disbanded became Ian Grieves when he bought the site from them and Arnie acquired that and Devonvale Vauxhall in Alloa too.

His few comments on his personal situation revealed an obviously caring individual struggling through life.

But it will definitely be for his genuine interest and enthusiasm for uninspiring, middle of the road cars, and for the personalities of the motor trade in Scotland that he'll be remembered on Autoshite..................oh, and the occasional lengthy post - so consider this a tribute - a few trite words didn't seem enough. It never did for you.

Rest in Peace

Never met Hendry but he had a seriously impressive knowledge of his trade, and his stories from inside Arnold Clark et al were always a good read.
