What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Insurance grin for a change.  I called up to update my new address on the policies for the Volvo and Rover.  I'd assume a slightly higher-risk area as it's not a cul-de-sac like my previous place so was expecting to be charged loadsmoney as a result.  I started with the Volvo and Admiral wanted £35 to relocate it to the new address and change storage from driveway to roadside (it's about a foot longer than my driveway) - not wonderful but OK, fair enough, could have been worse.  Then rang Adrian Flux about the 220, which (just!) fits on my driveway so just an address change.  No charge!

I see Adrian Flux get slated a lot on forums and they do charge a lot for some changes (such as upping a mileage limit, if I recall) but in this case, they deserve a big thumbs-up.  They were the cheapest around for the 220 back when I re-bought it in May and it must be said, every time I've called the staff are always friendly and helpful.

Tell me of this occupation, is there vacancies for hither I would like to partake in

I deliver things what people have bought. To be honest, it's only the location that really makes it enjoyable - I reckon it'd be a horrible job to do in urban areas, or using roads that are prone to proper congestion. It helps that the 'shop' in question is pretty cool with their workers - I know that their competitors can be real arses to drive for.

The only van left was a 55 plate Corsa at work, so I went out on a job in it. Was a 1.2 pez with 180k and it was a blast thrashing it through the countryside, this is a works van that's on sites a lot and no one looks after them, but it's bloody stood up well to the abuse. The engine is quiet and nice and free revving and its filthy inside but the plastics are in good nick still and was pretty rattle free. Go Vauxhall.

Thats the one thing i liked about amys 1.2 corsa, you wound it right up and kept it there! I used to have a fair bit of fun wanging it to work and back. Once the backbox comes for the zx and i fit that and the new rear calipers I may have to take it for a balls out hoon!

Chinook!

One flew over head at the campsite we were staying at last week at an altitude of about 200ft.  That thump thump noise was quite loud.

We had F-15 Strike Eagles flying very low over the house yesterday, then pulling into sharp turns. Now they are loud. And impressive. Bloomin' 'Merkins and their fancy jets. I hate liking them!

One of those scared the crap out of me on the M69 this week. I would hazard a guess it was at no more than 200ft, you could see the detail on the side of it and it had to climb slightly to clear a pylon. Just appeared from behind some trees.

To be fair I see a few of them as I'm not too far from raf odiham. But it was the first time I was outside with something with which to take a photo. The noise is unmistakable.

Out of absolutely nowhere my employers have decided to up everyone's pay to the living wage. Although considering their record up to this point I can't help but wonder if there's an ulterior motive

We've just about to brief that out to our employees too (I work loosely in the HR dept by virtue of some bungled restructures) and it's going to £9.50 an hour minimum by 2017 or something. Costing us millions but seems to be a good step.

I am now fully installed Chez_Mo. Hard slog today getting my bed up to the flat, and because a mate who was in the town for a interview decided he had other things to do, I took the mattress up myself. But I'm happy, no more chav_attitudes/scrambler bikes going up and down the street and screechy shouting by half-wits, just quietness and a good view over the street where I can spot shite cars.

Thats good to hear LS, pleased for you mate.

That sounded like a bad episode of Benefit Street where you lived before.

When I was a kid we used to regularly have A-10 'Tankbusters' fly over our house. They were very distinctive. They disappeared from the area about 25 years ago...:(

The actual minimum wage certainly isn't enough to live any quality of life on, and whilst a good idea on paper the problem is that it's become somewhat of a default. Raising it would help put money into the economy and lessen the reliance on benefits

Hoverboard? Hoax/advertising stunt? Cool if it was/is real.

So it's a mag/lev set up. Hmm, what about when it went over water?

Sorry for the questions but I just want it to be real.

Amazon insured for another year, £88 fully comp. Quite happy with that :)

Water doesn't prevent the magnetic force from working. It was probably quite shallow.

Have you not seen back to the future 2? It doesn't work in deep water. Well unless you've got power.

The chap who bought my 2001 R75 V6 has bitten the bullet and attempted to change the belts himself, as they were the original belts from 2001 @ 67k (OH NO BREAKAGE ANY MINUTE!!)

Guess what?

He wishes he hadn't bothered, there was nothing wrong or much difference between the old and the new belts! Proving the whole 6 year rule suggested by Rover is poppycock.

^ Goes to prove what I keep saying, timing belts don't fail on their own. The two main causes (in my experience) of belt failure are a tensioner or idler collapsing and knackered cam bearings causing extra drag.

It's no coincidence that most engines that suffer a belt failure also have a poor service history and oil that looks like tar.
