Guardian reporting on yesterday at Ascot.

Slightly irreverent naming of the King a la Private Eye.

Royal Ascot day three: Dettori win caps historic day for horse racing – as it happened | Royal Ascot | The Guardian

Lester Piggott was the greatest Flat jockey I’ve ever seen but Dettori has that something special and, like Lester, he has gone out of racing’s orbit and into the public consciousness. His final appearance at Ascot (indeed, his last day race-riding in Britain) on Champions Day in October is a day not to be missed.

I didn't for a second think I'd get these past domestic management but it looks like I got away with it...

Don't underestimate what you may be able to get away with.

Bought my better half a 'track day experience' thing as a Mother's day gift in 2001, a Honda Prelude followed by a Formula Ford. She walked away grinning..... the same woman who, several years earlier, drove  my L-plated daily, straight over a kerb island in a car park with 3 kids in the back resulting in her laughing uncontrollably, me left in silent disbelief and the eldest trying to open the door shouting "I'm never going in the car with you again".

She bought an Impreza WRX mid 2002.

She's a keeper.

This is a net grin. There's a small grump due to someone else's etiquette - rather lack of! But it's an overall grin..

Down the car boot this morning managed to pick up quite a few decent bits

There was a stall with a lady exclaiming everything £1 or less..

I was intrigued but at a quick glance it looked like all the cherries had been picked, this was just under 2 hours after it opened

Except for one particular box which was half tucked under the table which nobody else seemed to have spotted

Within it was a few absurd bargains

A BT freeview hd recorder worth £50, a Phillips DAB/Bluetooth/NFC docking station worth about the same, and the holy grail was a Sony Walkman-style Cassette recorder, with inbuilt microphone and stereo speakers. Complete in its box even with the original headphones! Looking around, this seems to fetch £100-150 if I wanted to sell it but I think I'm going to keep it to play the few audio cassettes that I still have

By this point I saw what I needed to see, I asked how much for the whole box and she said £4!!

Four quid for that lot? That was worth the early start!

The small grump was this very rude man who was talking over everyone else at the stall on the phone, having a conversation in god knows what language, he made sure that everyone else could listen in if they wanted to.. just as I'm looking through the box, this hand creeps in and tries to pull the entire box towards him whilst I'm looking through it! He asks me if I'm buying everything, I said yes I am actually and nabbed it back.

Come on! Car boot etiquette is that if someone has got there before you, you leave them to finish with what they are looking at before you try to take it or start negotiating for it while it's in someone else's hands...

Anyway, among all the other bits I was very happy with that lot!

Sounds like one of the house clearance-type stands I often see - price keeps going down until it's free towards the end and anything that doesn't get picked up gets chucked in a bin and loaded back onto the van for disposal. I stood next to one the other week, he saw the techy stuff I had, came over to ask what a couple of things he'd got were and whether they were worth anything (ancient Cisco router and an external HDD, so not really!). Ended up giving me a telly he couldn't be arsed loading back in - working 32" Sony full HD thing with the remote! Gave to my folks to replace their bedroom TV. Now that I have business cards for the PC repair/refurbished laptop work I can start leaving cards with these guys for any IT kit they get.

I've been grinning since fixing the exhaust on my son's 125.

You may recall in the grumpy thread last week that I broke a bolt in the head. The second one snapped too, but since they were cheap aftermarket ones they did at least drill easily. Nice and gentle, and both bolts broke up leaving the threads almost entirely intact. Cleaned that up, new studs and away we go.

Phew.

the silicon sealant round the bath needed redone - good practice is to fill the bath with water so when it sags, the sealant fills the gap and doesn’t get overstretched when a hefty pie eater climbs in to take a shower.

unfortunately, i could not find the plug so had to improvise

We’ve finally completed on house purchase and picked keys up at half 1 this afternoon.

first of all, assess what needs doing. We were left some paint.

IMG_3055.thumb.jpeg.d068245408c82c010cc7a25e0021b316.jpeg

I’m sure that’s still viable….

next, this has to go:

Probably lay it in the garage to keep me warm when I have to fix something on a car. Unless anyone wants it for their house….
