Took the old barge out on its first drive of 2023 and it managed 40km without breaking down which is a big win.

A lot of '90's chod about here  but the most common is a car i truly love, the humble K11 Micra, the little buggers are everywhere! Makes me grin a lot 😁

Rural Hungary.

Google maps really can be misleading. So I get on a train going to Diósjenö because it looks like a nice train. Check Google maps and it says there are at least three restaurants, a post office, several other shops, bus stops and all sorts so I should be OK to get something to eat. Looks like this.

Makes it look like a small town centre.

Well the main road looks like this. And it's lunchtime so you would think the busiest time of day.

IMG_20230428_135954.thumb.jpg.eb328a6c7737c53363ca11fff1a3ed90.jpg

And looking the other way.

IMG_20230428_140006.thumb.jpg.c59640f7a27ad574219514ee74746313.jpg

The white painted building in the middle of the picture was marked as a bakery on Google maps. It really didn't look like it. I walked in asked if anybody spoke English (in English obviously) and a man goes out the back and brings a young woman back with him. She didn't really speak English either (and why would she, I wasn't expecting them to, it was more out of hope) but knew a few words. Beer is fine, beer is understood everywhere (except in Czech where it is pivo) so then she shows me a menu and it  had burgers on it so I understood that. I ordered a Retro Burger out of curiosity. Looks like a normal burger I thought.

IMG_20230428_133918.thumb.jpg.7e20625ce3ca108f6654028221096944.jpg

But it was good. That's a decent lunch I reckon in a beautiful village. I went for a little walk afterwards. Very pretty.

IMG_20230428_140943.thumb.jpg.769e2061c8c5f4c4d31078f915770168.jpg

Of course I'm taking a picture of the pretty white church. Lada Niva with a trailer? Oh yeah so there is.

I also managed to buy ice cream by pointing and nodding. Chocolate with cherry and coconut with raspberry.

IMG_20230428_140421.thumb.jpg.ef65a6ac4601e646e54a41e97395fb14.jpg

And then had to sit here to wait for the train to arrive.

I was going to put this in the miniature railwayshite thread (and will probably still do) for obvious reasons but there are only about seven of us on there and this really deserves a bigger audience and I was genuinely chuckling  whilst sat on my own so it is valid.

Just outside Budapest Keleti station is a small underground restaurant. The awning outside is in the shape of a big Nohab which is genius in itself.

For the non train people here a Nohab was a 1940s American GM design built under licence by a company in Sweden (called Nohab, hence the name) and sold to various European railways including Hungary.

But then you go downstairs and there is a twin track O or G gauge railway (not quite sure) running all round the outside with a spur running off to every table and all drinks are delivered by train.

This was two small pork steaks with chips AND rice some token grilled veg and all smothered in garlic.

Now these people got the 218 and I was quite jealous. These were the most common diesel in Germany for many years and I've had many of the real thing.

Currently in Turkiye and I'd forgotten just how much chod is on the roads here. Multiple flavours of elderly Renault and hatchloons aplenty. Won't be travelling further afield this time so no exciting* hire car although we might strike it lucky with the odd cab.

Also did the coffee n pasty,  parked near ye olde Norman Church in our face stuffing spot. There's a wedding on so we're enjoying spotting the classy* guests arriving.

It was a tie between the woman with see thru skirt / no knickers and the big girl wearing a backless ABBA jumpsuit.

The bride turned up in a magnificent Rolls Royce, er kit car. Didn't see the groom so don't know if he was wearing a Leeds United shirt.

Excellent. I'll admit I didn't just stroll past it by accident, I had seen it online beforehand and most of the reviews looked good so I had planned to go there. But it turned out even better than I expected.

I like the fact that occasionally the waiter had to come out and give one of them a push. I know from running my own model railway that things that have always worked sometimes decide not to.

I've got custody of the ex- @BorniteIdentity Avensis SR while Miss SL and her BF are back at uni (slumming it in the LS400, poor old students). So it would be silly not to use it:

Fold-down rear seat made it ideal for collecting some lengths of timber and it was good fun scooting around between places getting DIY stuff to keep me busy over the weekend. The 2-litre still pulls very well and it's remarkable how tight it still feels after nearly 278k miles. The slight drop on the driver's door and manky, now wrapped/bodged steering wheel cover are the only immediate indications of the mileage it's done. Last year's charity rally stickers are still in place as large amounts of lacquer will come off with them if they're removed....

Also found a purple friend:

Consul (not Granada) in Purple Velvet, doesn't get much better than that does it? The lady said it belonged to her son, lucky chap.
