Popped to the pub earlier with mrs fps parents only to find the card machine was out, I borrowed the stepway to go to Tesco for the cashpoint and saw this beauty so swung onto the petrol station to take a picture

Is it bad that I'm excited about running about in a car with mismatched panels, and possibly even a front wing missing?

In the late 70s my dad was a market trader, we were driving through thrapston at about 7am on the way to Cambridge when my dad pipped the horn, put his hand up and said you OK to a guy standing near the bridge

Guy said yes thanks and we drove off

next 5 miles I can see my dad racking his brain

so I say, do you know who that was, Eddie Yates from Coronation St

He thought it was somebody he went fishing with

I like to think that when it comes to clothes most gay men don't actually look "gay" In fact I like to imagine that clothing wouldn't be a reliable indicator of sexual orientation.

In the 1970s where I grew up if anyone walked round in dungarees with no shirt on I don't think their sexual orientation would have been in question, things are very different in the 21st century.

As I passed through Storrington on the way home today, sitting at the zebra crossing waiting for the lights to change opposite me was a young lad driving a V-reg Datsun Cherry. With L-plates and dad in passenger seat.

Having seen a teenage girl driving a Perodua Kelisa on L-plates within the last fortnight it looks like West Sussex has its next generation of Shiters preparing for life on the road

Sounds bang up to date for Storrington!

(Based on going to Rydon school years ago).

I love this hire place in Edgware - I drive past it regularly and am amazed at how clean those old smiley transits are. I’m very tempted to just go in and hire one, just to have the chance to drive one!

They used to have  branch in Worthing, just behind the main train station. Looks like the same vans!

Sorted the Saab's charging woes for the grand total of 50p, the price of a new cable eye to go on the alternator terminal, plus a couple of half height nuts I found in dad's garage yesterday morning and a shake proof washer I took out of something I dismantled ages ago.

Glad I have a gas soldering iron with a small blowtorch tip. Tinned the cable & connector, crimped them lightly then flowed the solder. Hopefully it'll last until I decide what the car's future is.

How did you get the stripped nut off?

I didn't. Just cut the cable off the old eyelet, and fitted the new one. Thankfully There was enough room left on the terminal for 2 slim nuts and the new eye so I'm settling for that until it's time to remove the exhaust fannymold for swirl flap removal, which will probably be after the yuletide. I can then remove the alternator at the same time and replace or repair the B+ terminal.

Had a hospital appointment today. That's not the grin. There was a very sudden and badly signed road closure that made me late. That's not the grin either. The grin is what I saw on the way there and back. I reckon there was a Rolls-Royce event at Blenheim Palace as there was a convoy of vintage Royces coming through Weston on the Green - I saw 17 of them before turning off, a few million quid's worth for sure. Came out of Oxford afterwards and a gorgeous blue Jensen CV8 pulled into a petrol station in front of me, then there was a post-war Rolls elsewhere in Oxford and some sort of 1950s sports racer (not a Jag C-type but similar in style), no doubt heading to Bicester Heritage.

Rarely go in Poundland.   Occasionally, a reference to some diecast treasures in the Shite in Miniature thread prods me to go and have a look.  I still rarely bother.  Last time I ventured in for some wild bird seed there was an almighty queue because they shut the people tills and opened up self check outs.   Which didn't work properly, leading me to chucking the bird seed inside a pink plastic dustbin and fucking off.

Went back today in search of cheap toiletries and it was a success.  Not only do the self checkouts work properly - they are Elvis!    God knows why EP Enterprises want to licence that (actually, I do know why £££) but it made me smile - well just a little on one side of my upper lip.

Wife to stepdaughter: "Lulu, can you take me to the Co-op please? Need to get some shopping for packed lunches tomorrow and forgot earlier. Good to get some more night time miles under your belt"

SD: "Yeah ok"

They go out, and come back in after 5-10 minutes.

SD opens door ranting.

"I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'VE ASKED ME TO DRIVE YOU TO THE SHOP JUST TO BUY SOME FUCKING CHEESE AND CRACKERS. GLEN'S (me) NOT HAD ANYTHING TO DRINK THIS EVENING HE COULD HAVE GONE"

Wife: "He's just cooked you dinner. And washed your clothes. And hoovered your room. And we had no camembert."

:-D

Ahh, the benefits of having another driver in the house. And I had no idea the wife was going to treat me to camembert and open that bottle of champagne we got as a wedding gift 2 years ago.

Are they cheaper to insure, my daughter passed her test a couple of months back , she's dodging uni for a year but only has a part time job

I was thinking of getting her a cheap car but the insurance at 18 is nuts

I laughed at the same thing when I popped into the one at Blackpool to grab a couple of bottles of pop on sunday

We've just had an email enquiry from a potential new customer at work. It is the weirdest request in 30years!

We are interested in doing full animal analysis of mice with respect to aluminium. There will be a need to "homogenize" the animals (about 20 g each) and after that do analysis.

Is this something you can help us with? What would the limit of quantification be?

Made us laugh anyway! We have politely declined on the lines that the mice paste will make the smoothies taste funny. Limit of detection we did calculate to be 0.1ppm per mouse!

Further along from there - to the right of the photo - there is a side street which is home to some old Alfa Romeos....

Ordered bits for the new heap yesterday, made a bit of a pigs ear of the order to be fair and David Manners sorted it out and then sent me an e-mail saying they'd sorted it out, given me a discount (as the parts are now OEM rather than aftermarket) changed the order to two thermostats and included the correct gaskets. They also said it's all out for delivery but you owe us £20 odd could you please cough up? So  I did...

Order arrived today, all correct :) What a change to get decent service :)

Not entirely sure. Might have been a classic policy that allowed learners, might have been a 'temporary cover' you can pay for to insure a learner on a car for a finite period. I know once madam passed her test Hastings monthly premium would have gone up from £50 pcm as a learner to £450 pcm as a fresh driver, so we had to shop around. It's still more than the car's worth, but she loves that car and can afford to contribute towards fuel & insurance etc. and only paying £104 ish a month TPFT on the Corolla.

Weirdly, it's much much cheaper to insure stepdaughter on the Saab, considerably cheaper at £54 a month up from the £38 I'm currently paying. But wife has said it's too powerful for her, so I've not added her to my policy.

You really do need to do a lot of shopping around to get a good price for a new driver; the insurance group rating is based on a number of things aside from crash safety and engine power - ease of repair, value, parts availability.
