What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

New (to me) computer tonight - I've upgraded from an ancient Dell wil a Pentium P4 processor off of the last century to a rater more modern setup for £100 from Gumtree. Its quite considerably better. Quad-core Xeon, 8Gb RAM, and just installed (and updating) Win 7 64-bit as I don't like the newer Windows versions.

its also very quiet. I'm toying with the idea of running Linux on the old P4 though - I have it on my laptop at work and its ace (ElementaryOS for those who care)

I think this is more of a grin than a sad thing, so it goes here. Closed and locked the door to our old place for the last time today. 6 years we lived there with sloped gravel and mud for a driveway. This place is much better, despite the spare room currently being chock full of boxes and other assorted moving detritus.

Funny that, my normal comment is everything biodegrades. It's just a matter of time...

Front end looks like someone saw a picture of an Austin Princess and went "yeah, that's perfect for a 2017 eco car"

The old caravan is a permanent fixture at the spooky campsite I frequent, but I've never seen the Maser before.

If I wasn't so hung over when I spotted it I'd have gone and shaken his hand and asked for general life advice.

It took me nearly 30 years to find out what that was. It was the Hoppipola of its day, they played it over everything, but I couldn't remember anything specific enough to look it up until Ken Bruce played it one day.

Aren't you going to see more by just going up one of the hills or even the castle?

I got the Mercury out today for a good long drive, just for the hell of it.

Had to go get some gas first, £50 and it still wasn't even half a tank! Lovely weather today too. Did a good 100 odd miles in the beast and really enjoyed it!

I've not used it much lately with other shit going on and building my garage etc etc but it was great fun just cruising around in it. The sound it makes is just wonderful too! I really don't know why I don't use it so much more to be honest. I absolutely love it!! Best stupid poorly advised purchase ever.

And I'm still finding Rock Auto fridge magnets in it too.

Since I bought it I've been finding these, the free ones RA give you when you buy their parts, pics of customers cars, in the Mercury. Every now and then one seems to appear from under the front seat. Another one appeared today (Douglas' Ford Maverick). They must be jammed in or under the seat somewhere and gradually work their way out or something but I can't see them anywhere. Hopefully it'll dispense something really cool one day like a revolver or something!

Cliché question I know Dan but any idea of what mpg you're getting from a 460 Mercury?

Does it actually matter? Personally I wouldn't care if I had one!

No it doesn't matter and I wouldn't care either, just interested.

Better than the 16-18mpg I get daily from a 2l pinto I'm sure.

Therefore the solution to my fuel economy problems:

"I'm gonna buy me a mercury

And cruise it up and down the road"

Mines got the 429 (7.0) engine. Exactly the same as a 460 (7.5) but slightly smaller, discontinued from 73 so mines one of the last.

But anyway, mpg.

I've never taken the slightest interest tbh, but I'd say low - mid 20's are achievable if you drive it well and don't hoon it. If you gun it and do high speeds or town driving that figure drops badly! Single figure mpg wouldn't be unrealistic!

Having driven it around town a bit it is very noticeable that your going through the fuel a lot quicker than normal, put it that way.

I don't tend to drive mine very hard tbh, it's still got a very recently rebuilt engine which is only about 1200 miles on it so far so I tend to 'baby' it a bit. I generally avoid city driving (suits me cos I hate roads like that anyway!) but if you stick to a nice steady 60mph motorway/A road cruising speed and go gentle when accelerating it's really not too bad on fuel. People make these cars out to be much worse than they are sometimes.

Having said that, you don't buy a car like this if mpg is a concern either! It's a hobby car and a fun car which is only used a few times a month so who cares?

A certain Mr Ramrod would be able to tell you more accurately what these big lumps will do. He drove his almost the length of England earlier this year and I don't think the mpg was all that offensive really.

I Might be out of the shit, my rover P4 oil light had been coming on a lot, I borrowed my mates gauge and sender and it didn't come on when I drove home from work today. The oil pressure isn't astounding but it was reassuring to see it at 52psi on my regular commute. It's only 15psi at hot idle so a rebuild is still needed, just less urgent

Does yours have any of the smog gear on it?

Nope!

It's a touch too early to have much smog gear anyway but it's not from a 'smog' state originally so didn't need any. The same car from California probably would have had it though...

Mines full fat unrestricted version!
