Day finished and I'm knackered. The grin is ive done nearly 420 mile on 35 quid of diesel at an average cost of 101.9ppl. Not worked out mpg yet but considering its got 256k on clock,a shed load of tools in back and a bike on trailer there and plus being as aerodynamic as a bungalow I don't think its done bad at all

56 MPG, though "35 quid of diesel" isn't very scientific.

I have not had a drink since new year.... mainly due to working my way through the MILs xmas cake.... which has a higher alcohol content than polish spirit... the expression "let them eat cake" was obviously coined by a son in law and not Marie Antoinette.

He's got an amber beacon on his roof.  Nothing bad ever happens when you have an amber beacon on the roof.  Unless you're Krujoe.

Actually both cars drove home and no kittens were killed. In fact this turn of events resulted in me saving one that evening.

I found her in cold, wet, squalid conditions, so put my foot down and brought her away. Meet Flossy, my current MEKANIK KITTEH. This is her at Will's pub on the way home that night:

Does this make me grin? Not really, but I didn't want to stick it in the grumpy thread despite the lack of professionalism in the industry being a real bugbear of mine. Still, idiots like this at rival dealers make my job easier.

Now reading a lot of posts on here with that staccato and mildly urgent Japanese-English accent you get on overdubbed Japanese cartoons, especially ones that end in ha ha.

Passes the time.

Ahhh, warms the old cockles seeing you save Flossy Joe.

A good car day today.  Dollywobbler's enjoying the Honda, after a call to Footman James (wonderful company!) the Rover 214SLi is now finally insured for a very small fee plus a big box of service goodies arrived today for it this morning. All this means it can finally go back on the road tonight for the first time since it was collected from JohnK in exchange for the 220SLi bike in December.  First job will be to replace the ancient HT leads which are falling apart and are almost certainly the cause of it running like a 3 legged dog when it's started from cold.  Hopefully, if time and weather allow, at the weekend it'll then get new plugs and an oil and filter change, followed by a set of new pads and a bit of caliper jiggling to sort out the front brakes.

Then to top it off, just made a quick phone call to the owner of my new Jaguar Sovereign to confirm collection for Saturday 30th January.  What a nice bloke, a very well spoken older gent, he said he's 'just been round the block in it 3 times this morning' and 'it's running perfectly, it's a proper car if you know what I mean'.  I certainly do and I can't wait.

I'm stumped as to why my Rover won't start.  Properly stumped.  It tries very hard but can only manage as much as half a cough before churning and churning again.  It was fine when I parked it up and it was fine all the while I've been driving it the past few months, it's managed to break itself sat on the drive at home doing nothing.

Three out of the four Google search hits for "hairy yellow string" point to Autoshite threads :-D

Well, things have moved on since October 2013.

Now there are seven hits for "hairy yellow string" (in quotation marks), and they ALL point to Autoshite :-D

Have you tried a whiff of easy start?

Pull the plugs and give them a clean/dry off

Does it sound normal when it is turning over? Also, was it very cold when you tried to start it and what state is the antifreeze in?

I'm wondering because I frequently see dead K's at this time of year because of the belt driven water pump freezing up which makes the belt skip a tooth or two on the crank pulley when you turn it over.

Antifreeze was done about 3 or 4 months ago and I've been keeping an eye on any coolant loss, which I haven't had for a while now.

It was quite cold but not freezing when I tried to start the car and it's been colder very recently and the car started without bother.  I've even driven it through snow a few days ago and it behaved impeccably.  When you mention the belt it did remind me that sporadically over the last couple of months I've had a single belt squeal on very wet days shortly after setting off but that's stopped completely lately.

After talking to Chompy we were wondering if it could be ignition related, none of the spark plugs, leads, points, &c. have been changed in my ownership or possibly ever.
