What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I have forgotten to take my memory card reader with me or else I would have uploaded the grainy picture I took today of an A-reg beige Triumph Acclaim, it travelling south as I sat having lunch in the Sligachan Hotel. I never expected to see one of those up here, I can tell you!

Had a phone call last night. My Son in Law has a Series 2a Land Rover, and on his return from delivering a tractor to a show, he blew his head gasket between 2 and 3. He rang basically to ask my advice. Today, with a bit of searching, I found all the bits he needed in my stash of crap. (I run a diesel, so I tend not to keep petrol bits) So I dropped over this afternoon. 2 hours later, one running motor. He tells me there's a bottle of JD with my name on it sitting at his house! Tidy Result!

Our chimney leaks, and being clueless about such things (and faced with quotes from up to 8 builders who all gave a different reason for the damp) we went for a middle-y priced one the year before last. It still leaks, the damp is worse and builders who've been since have said the work done is all wrong. That should be in the grump thread but here's the grin bit:

We got a quote last week from a guy down the road, no recommendation, just a chance thing. He said really the only thing we could do is render it. Now, my OH, being a bit of an old buildings freak/conservationist had been desperate to keep it brick, so I mentioned this to builder guy. He then went off on one about being an old buildings nut himself and the work he does at the Welsh Slate Museum and also the renovation of Bangor's Memorial Arch. OH is the secretary of Bangor Civic Society so I knew a little bit about it, OH would have loved to chat him up I'm sure!

I asked if there was any way that the brick could stay uncovered and he gave me a cracking description complete with doodles about what he'd do. I asked for a quote for render and also a quote for the taking down/damp proofing/rebuilding of the chimney out of interest, but that probably we'd have to opt for the render.

Quote came in today and it's only £400 more to have the chimney rebuilt in brick with a lead tray. Hopefully OH will be happy. I (a closet old buildings freak) really want to keep the brick too!!

Went to a cracking music festival just down the road this weekend. Close enough (six miles) that we gave up the camping idea as a stupid one and commuted instead. Some simply awesome acts, all of which we'd never heard of. There's a lot of ridiculously good music away from the bloody charts. An X-reg (as in 1982) Mitsubishi camper in beige was a treat, as was a very tidy E-reg Uno. Didn't have my camera handy to capture them sadly. (after taking over 1000 shots at La Vie en Bleu, I needed a break from my camera!).

Straight back from that into our village carnival for the jubilee. Not that much royal stuff, which was nice. A huge procession (most of the village must have turned out) braved the rain and a good time was had by all. Then we organised a gig at our local hotel with the superbly excellent Sound of the Sirens. http://www.soundofthesirens.net/

They're superb live, we had a great turnout (despite being a mid-week gig) and then chatted with the girls and their manager until the wee hours.

Now hoping the good times will continue as (OMG some actual old car content) the BX 'Safari' is in for MOT this afternoon...

Saigon.

The car in front is a Toyota.

Unless its a Scooter which is 11ty Brazillian times more likely.

Toyota Corollas, 4 door Yarii, the van thing and the Surf people carrier.

Notable shite runs to one Lada Riva at the airport, a 405 in traffic and a handfull of Suzuki SuperCarrys (or whatever a Bedford Rascal is called here).

Phnom Penh right now = Exactly the same. Enjoy the monsoon...

Do you think they'll still have parts and servicing available for the Princess?

Tell them your Princess is called Helen.

Just cruise on in past reception giving them a cursory flash of your SUPERCOVER card. Waltz into the Hydrolastic wing and begin pumping yourself up.

The neighbours just gave us an aerial view of our house, taken in the early 1980s. Best thing is that there's a metallic goldy-silver Morris Marina 2 on the driveway! A picture will follow but possibly not until tomorrow.

Mr B's and HairyMel's tat-tickling blogs on RR. I can't tell you how much housework I didn't do while Megan was asleep, because I had to catch up with these.

Both are amazing. 8)

The Sunbeam looks so much more like a car now. I really thought it was beyond saving to start with.

I made OH look at the Maser pics, and even though he knows nothing about cars and has little interest in them, he's amazed by the metalwork going on.

Mega.

I just enjoyed a great thing that happened.

I was sitting at a set of traffic lights when I noticed in my rear view mirror a hideous barried-up Celica with big spoilers and a shockingly poor orange and blue felt tip pen paint job caning up the road behind me at a fearsome rate (for a 30 zone). Had two lads in, the driver in the classic 'cripple hook' one-handed laid back driving position. Obv i would never make any conscious effort to get out of the way of such a comical shit box so as the lights went to green I edged away ROVERSTYLE at about 4 mph, causing him to have to hotch the brakes on a bit sharp. Imagine my TOTAL JOY when as his speed descended to the 5mph threshold, a massive eruption of steam started gushing out from the entire gap round his bonnet and headlights, fuggin beautiful. I LOL'd my bo11ox off as he leaped out and popped the bonnet about 10 yards after the junction to investigate his hopefully completely bo11oxed VVT-i 'K-series wannabe' Toyotamota. I shall go to sleep with a smile on my face tonight.

Mrs R and I have been out for dinner tonight. We were guests of a couple from the Classic Vehicle Club, who are part of a rival team at our Thursday night pub-quiz. Mrs Couple's sister and her husband are members of our team, and he happens to be chairman of the Writers' Group; they were there too. Very jolly night ensued! :D Mrs R is most pleased with herself for being able to "do" the evening at all without the input of alcohol, as previously she would have required large doses to boost her confidence. I, therefore, am extremely proud of her for the same reason.

'Two puffs in the rectum', I think I've seen that one. A little bit too 'special interest' for my tastes but worth a watch!*

*Other unfunny, very slightly homophobic "jokes" are available. That was the best I could do right now, sorry.

First proper drive of the 460 since I fitted the new wheels to it. Best comment yet was from a dub mong who was overheard saying 'Those wheels should be on a Volkswagen'. Yeah. Except they're not Borbets (that's the next question I get asked, after LOL CAN I HAV UR ENGINE 4 ME 5GT ROFL), they're Oscam Vegas, and they won't be going on a fucking VW for as long as I'm around, anyway.

It really transforms how the car drives too. It feels slower, not just because of the larger rolling radius but because they've taken all the histrionics out of booting it. Now it just gets on and goes. Eagle F1s have incredibly stiff sidewalls though, so the ride has got harder, and noisier.

A fair trade off, I reckon. I am very tempted to take it to France. Very tempted.

Nice wheels those, Jon. What profile of tyre are you running, hard to tell from the picture but they look 55 or 60 series? If the last ones were lower profile I bet it's a whole lot nicer to drive now.

Out in the Jaaaaag last night, in the pissin rain. We're not talking everyday rain here, it was TIPPING it down. Mr Dick Head in his VW van (the Polo one) decided he was going to race me from the traffic lights at Windmill. As oft-quoted on this forum, I put brogue to Axminster and the Jag took off like a stabbed rat. 200 horsepower and all-wheel drive. What a brilliant machine! Fast, comfy and shows a clean pair of heels.

!!POLITICAL WARNING!! Interesting graph on my pretentious homepage news website came up earlier, for all those who say we're so up shit creek it transpires that of all the world's advanced economies, only Sweden, Switzerland, the States and Norway are less likely to default on their national debts than we are:
