I might have just done a naughty ...

I now need to work out which cars are going, and how soon.

Unexpected afternoon off today so took the grinder to the boot floor of the disco to release the metal plate over the fuel sender.  Managed to undo both fuel lines from the rusty stubs that came out of it so the sender is kippered but both lines survived.  New one is ordered so hopefully that will solve the running issues and the knackered fuel gauge.

Still need to work out why the starter doesn't always work on the 405,  it now happens a lot when it's warm so we have taken to leaving the engine running if there isn't a convenient hill to park on.

XUD engine? Same problem as I had with the 205 and have now with the ZX - it's the solenoid not getting enough juice to make a connection. The solution on the ZX is to have a wire connected to the terminal of the solenoid with the other end somewhere near the battery - pop the bonnet, touch the wire onto the battery +ve terminal and the starter cranks the car into life.

Selling anything interesting Chris?

All are interesting mate ;)

Current potential selling list looks like:

Volvo 340 vario - £450

Daihatsu Storia X4 (the nice one from Jersey) £ = much more than you think a 1998 Daihatsu costs.

Volvo 850R - Undecided - it owes me £2.5k

Slim chance of Umm  going as well, but I'd like to avoid that.

I'll do for sale threads or update the respective threads when I decide which are definitely going.

Girl phones work this morning "I've got a flat tyre and can't get a lift, will have to wait for the garage to open". Fine, whatever.

Speaking to her earlier about her problems and were listing how the solutions to her problem were all not achievable when she goes "and I wouldn't be able to put on the spare wheel". I am confused, I assumed her new shape Fiesta didn't have a spare, same as my shit Corsa. Nope, apparently her car has one but she didn't know how to fit it. I pointed out it was a case of following the instructions on the jack and undoing 4 nuts but she just gave me a look that said "are you serious?".

That's the second person I've encountered at work who can't change a wheel, the first was a guy who didn't even realise his car had a spare at all and I ended up changing it for him.

I was in Halfrauds gettinga rattle can mixed a few years ago and there was a chap at the counter who went up to the girl serving and had the following conversation

"I noticed that my oil warning light was on when I drove home last night so have just popped in as I need some oil"

"What sort of oil do you need?"

"I don't know, but if I buy some can you put it in for me too?"

I just turned to him with a look of pity and said "Do you know how many man points you have just lost in the last few seconds?"

I know that not everyone knows everything about everything but there are certain things you should just be brought up to know about such as changing a plug, using an iron and checking basic serviceable items on a car if you have one. Plus when the oil light comes on its best not to drive the car.

Nice to see the old wreck is still on the go!

There's a hell of a vibration from the driveline now as well.  I'm thinking driveshaft and/or CV joint.  It's only present when under load and disappears when the clutch is disengaged.  Over about 50mph it's threatening to shake itself to pieces, hence it's pretty handy that I now have the Gooner for daily duties and the Saab can wait in disgrace until payday.

I'm tempted to offer a part exchange deal but will instead suggest that the driveline vibration *might* be the inner tripods; I have learnt the turbo side one tends to dry out due to the heat down there resulting in problems such as you descrribe but seemingly you can swap them over so the worn surface only causes problems when you are reversing...

No man knows more than 1 setting on the washing machine, which is the one it's already at.

Sadly this isn't as unusual as you think. Many people these days couldn't fit a wheel trim or even fit a dust cap to a valve. Cars to many people are either a simple alternative to public transport or just a lifestyle trinket, so anything that goes wrong with it, it must be chucked at the mechanics. They're not taught to change wheels so know nothing about it. Even if it's all laid out there in front of them.

My brother once topped up his expansion tank with water. Which would have been fine if it hadn't been the brake master cylinder he topped up.

TBH changing a wheel should be part of the driving test.

When I worked there a bloody teacher came in with the red light on the dashboard problem and no oil. He tipped 3 of the 5 litre bottles of Valu oil into it and came back to me moaning it had taken 15 litres and "still wasnt at the top."

I explained the concept of a dipstick to him, cut the sides off the empty tubs so he could use them as drain cans which really impressed him, and loaned him a spanner after instructing him on what to do to remove the excess oil.

15 litres of oil all over the carpark later, he came back to return the spanner and buy more oil, but never got as far as putting it in because he snapped his key off in the door lock.

People this fucking helpless should not be teaching children.

40 degrees cotton. Anything else is pointless.

Hotpoint should sell washing machines for single men that just have a big green button on the front to start it.

Davenumbers, that must be a teacher thing, was he a history teacher by any chance? Mine did exactly the same thing, but did fill it to the top (Morris 1800) and then wonder why it wouldn't start. He didn't like a smart-arse kid pointing out his error.

I know more about washing machines than I care to admit, but ours is permanantly set to 40/cottons/fast spin. I also can work an iron (thanks to the army) but the only one I use regularly melts solder rather than creases.

Edit - Dave, sounds like you met my dad.

Selling a lovely little 58reg C1 Citroen for my mate, got a text from a chap who wants to come tomorrow to view/make an offer, Later got a call from a lovely lady in Stoke who sounds a brilliant customer, says price sounds great and want's it for her daughter who can only drive little cars due to physical issues. You can almost guarantee tomorrows guy,if he turns up, will be a total tit head making mongy offers.

Have to move back to Kent in the summer so am thinking how I'll be able to transport my stuff up there. Have been tempted to shift the Rover and get a cheap estate, but don't want to go through the hassle of selling

...inner tripods...

Thanks for the info.

Your other 900 is very appealing, and I prefer the red to the grey of mine. But I'll persevere with JYR for a little longer at least. I really need to take advantage of having the Gooner and attempt a few jobs like this, which are out of my comfort zone, without having to worry about putting it all back together for Monday morning.

A short-term swap of vehicles, perhaps?

Would be a big faff since I'm starting and finishing at different ends of the country. The Rover is slow and awful on fuel (one is fine, just not both) but nothing has gone wrong on it and the climate control works as it should, so big reasons for keeping it

You can lend the 306 dizzler estate when I'm done moving units with it? Should be on the road for next month but we can work something out.

I bought it because it worked out cheaper than hiring a van several times.

No can do, if she found out I was whoring her out for AS likes she'd snap me like a twig, she plays football and is a bit scary...

No worries! Do give me first refusal if you ever want to sell ;)
