Went for a ace hoon last night to see my old man in his t4 at carsington water in Derbyshire. Took all the back roads from Derby and was mainly traffic free. Got there and the front tyres was red hot and the whole thing had a proper workout, the amount of heat these pump out from the engine bay is crackers.

Here she is cooling down.

Then this morning the postie bought me some cushion covers from the states, one is a old bmw copy of a seat fabric and the other a copy of the old b10 alpina fabric. Mrs T was wise and knew I wouldn't just buy some cushion covers for the house and that they must be some car connection.

My 205's head was removed on Friday and has gone to be pressure tested, measured for flatness then skimmed.  The head gasket was knackered. Good news was that the liners had not dropped.  They are now clamped to prevent movement if the crank is turned.

I fancied sitting in the sun to have a coffee and bacon roll this morning.  Drove to Costa Brackley and had to sit inside because all outside seats were taken. Read the Mail but still none the wiser as to today's news (The Times had got AWOL). Got back in the Stellar and got a faint click when turning the ignition to start.  I may have said 'you fucking bastard.'  Tried again before crawling out of the car to hammer the starter solenoid and it started.  Had a pleasant drive through the countryside along single track lanes whilst admiring the budding trees and soaking up the warmth.  Next job is to look on-line for a cheap starter or I'll be forced to use the Tipo of much back ache.

I drove around the Wirral today, how I managed the whole day without killing someone by stabbing or fire I genuinely don't know. Heswall Tesco is god's waiting room, concentrations of miserable old retired fuckers thinking they are made of pure gold and their shit smells of incense.

I'm sure you can guess what the sensible* people of AS would advise you to do : BUY IT !

Yes, it may well lead you to financial ruin, but so what ? You'll have a smug grin on your face every time you pop into Lidl for your weekly supply of baked beans, toast and cheap lager, as this will be waiting for you outside :

I'd love to park up in lidl or Aldi in that!

Sadly not, that is with the thermostat at 16 degrees and only on for a few hours in the morning and evening and putting an extra dog on the bed, sometimes it is warmer outside. The windows are single glazed sashes which despite the ceremonial gaffer taping up for winter are still as draughty as hell, there is no insulation at all in the loft. I tried to get one of the "free" deals, but apparently as my loft is "too big" I can't have any free at all. (I assumed I could have the maximum amount allowed and then buy the rest, but no.) Currently trying to get a summer deal on it. As you can see I'm in an ideal position to contemplate buying a Bentley.

I 'may' not be the ideal person to speak here, but,  BUY IT!

You are a long time dead, only pass this way once etc. My bugger has bankrupted me (just about) and I still love it. That MK6 is just gorgeous and a lot simpler to work on and repair than later ones. Yes, bits will be pricey but the owners club has some great stuff available for 'proper' cars (like yours) and there is a wealth of knowledge about.

Buy the car, then buy the windows on a deferred interest credit card. If you don't like the car/ownership/costs, sell it and pay off the card before interest gets you. If you love and adore the car, then worry about paying the credit card then! I guess you could always sell the new windows.... :)

This afternoon I have polished my wheel rims on the Mazda. Only done two so far 'cos it is hard work (which I am not fond of!) but they do look proper good. All shiny and blingy, I also blasted some silver paint about on the spokes. I did that bit in proper Autoshite fashion - no prep, no masking, no care :) Still looks better than before!

The passengers side will be trickier as I live on a one way road and I don't fancy sitting in the middle of said road rubbing down my wheels with sandpaper while dodging Argos delivery lorries!

You didn't join the owners club !!!! I hope it is better than the Rolls Royce enthusiasts as they are £100 a year membership !!!!!. Bloody rip off that is, the Austrailian club put a lot of info online and worth looking at.

This is currently my state of mind, that Mk6 caused me a sleepless night; sensible head is telling me that even though I can find the money to pay for it, it's not a good idea. If it blew up/fell apart I would not have the spare cash to fix it, I really should be sorting out the windows and insulation on the house before next winter so that I don't have another £600 gas bill for the quarter. Not so sensible head is full off WCPGW, even so far as trying to work out what a totally buggered Mk6 is worth to a specials builder and thinking I could always go back to work if I had to.

It hasn't helped at all that I have now had a chat with the owner, who sounds a genuine sort and has answered my questions, plus added information I didn't ask about. (Junkman wouldn't like it, the interior light and cigar lighter don't work)

I am currently batting the devil off my shoulder, it is nothing like a cheap estate car, which is what I really should be buying. I have no idea whether you can get a roof-rack for a coach-built Mk6 which could be a compromise.

Are you growing cannabis?

For £600 a quarter you grow enough ganja to raise the titanic.

Busy day with cars today.

Gatekeeper's motability lease ends tomorrow, so the back tyre decided to have a low speed blow out in protest. No spare, because modern, so called the RAC and hoovered it while waiting. The RAC bloke plugged it & followed me down to Kwikfit who predictably quoted 2 hours to fit a replacement so, I left it there. There were more important things to do...

Need a stopgap car until the Gatekeeper's new lease car turns up... which could be a week, a month or a millennium... So off we went up the M6 to Leyland & we came back with this:

Pineappleless 1994 Golf L. Manual everything, but curiously it has a rev counter. Never had a VW before, so what better way to start than with a base model of the unloved mk3!

MIL CW had one of these as her last car. Utterly reliable and sufficiently modern to make her think she was not being left behind. It only went because the hire purchase agreement was, how shall I put it, prohibitively expensive.

Enjoy! I predict this will turn out to be immortal.

Did a bit of catch up servicing/ TLC on the rover 75 dizzler; a custom made thermostat housing spliced into the top hose for starters ( the original bmw unit probably made sense in a north/south installation) in this east west install options to replace a kippered 'stat include loosening an engine mount and canting the engine over to one side..... Hence the common mod to add a thermostat housing the the top hose in a nice and sensible location access wise.

I Also replaced the crank case breather filter and cleaned out the EGR valve, which was caked full of crap, all of the above has made it much more responsive, I Don't have any pics aside from one of the cheif mechanic....post-4673-0-30682200-1462651298_thumb.jpg

Any questions and I'll try to help you out. My family have run a 96 Golf L for about the last 7-8 years and I've done lots of things to it to keep it on the road. I'm guessing 1.4 single point injection. Air bag steering wheel?

Good car. Ran one for 7 years and 90k on a student pittance. It got cheap oil and filters yearly, things only replaced when they broke and it never FTPed. Cockroach. Keep on top of the rust and you're good!

Went to Germany today. Been up since 4am and got home about half an hour ago.

Things I discovered:

It was very hot in Frankfurt today

Borussia Dortmund were sadly lacklustre against an inferior Eintracht Frankfurt side who managed to win 1-0

Both teams had an excellent repertoire of songs and drumming and took turns in slagging of each other's parentage. Polite.

German football fans don't feel the need to kick your teeth in for wearing a different colour shirt to the one they have. In fact they all wanted to talk about Leicester and Liverpool and how great it was to have a travelling contingent from the UK. Seeing the number of different shirts chatting afterwards over a beer in the sun was a great reflection on German fans. I cannot say the same about many uk teams.

My son can eat his own body weight in shite foods without gaining an ounce or feeling sick

Germans love classics, I saw some beautiful cars being used including a massive Mercedes thing which looked like it had just arrived from pebble beach and a silver Triumph Spitfire with the chrome painted black which looked the tits

Stansted's passport control makes a bath of eels appear well ordered and co-ordinated

Nissan Juke hire cars are not very good and I wish I had insisted on the Hyundai i20 I had originally ordered

It seems all new cars/Vauxhalls are indeed shit. Friends company Insignia, 1 steady driver, has it's flywheel rattling like a good 'un at 29k/64reg. This will not be a surprise to the good folk in AS land.

How did Renault manage to evolve this

Into this? I'd have any Alpine but 80's ones are not a pretty thing. Harewood Hillclimb yesterday.

To be fair, it was Alpine who did the evolving, not Renault. I love both myself. The turbocharged V6s are surprisingly quiet though!

Thanks, hopefully I won't need to take you up on it but good to know there is some knowledge on here if needed ☺. Yes 1.4 injection. No airbag on this one. I've only done 40 odd miles in it so far but all seems fine.

"It was acceptable in the '80s."

No different to a '60s Dino eventually being replaced by an '80s Mondial...

I'm a fan of pretty much all Alpines, and love the styling of 80s D501.

I sold my GTA  V6 Turbo last year and would love an A610 ... Unfortunately I think I've missed the boat on that one.

edit: the A110 to the A310 was the major evolution in looks, I love the look of the A310

Changed the rear two exhaust boxes on my Range Rover Friday evening and changed the rear pads on the Sierra yesterday-as mentioned ended up wrecking part of my calliper wind back kit because I forgot how to use it.

I love the look of the later GTA Alpines and considered buying one about 10yrs ago but as I have said on here before, I just hate the dashboard.

TBH it actually looks a bit better than it used to as it has a bit of retro charm that was missing when it was more recent but its still pretty grim IMO.

In an ideal world though I would have an A310. Sexy as fook.

post-3133-0-17575600-1462700329_thumb.jpg

Not sure what a dash in that looks like though, not even sure I have ever seen one in the flesh. I might not actually like it when I meet it.

Who was I perving over a white A310 with at Chumley last year - Skattrd, was it you?  Anyway, it was indeed a fabulous beast.

I'll add my voice to the defenders of the A610 too - though it looks more like a sporty GT than a barely tamed racing car.

Guilty, I'm often found perving over Alpines.

Whilst on about hideous dashboards, part of the reason I bought a GTA was I hated the Lotus Eclat/Excel dash. The GTA has an awesome digital display for the fuel gauge, and makes funky electronic beeping noises for the indicators.

As I said in the post I would have any of them, it's just that to me the Alpines got progressively clunkier styled as time went on. A310 uber cool but I don't think I've seen one in the wild unless at Le Mans. A friend had a 87E Turbo 20 years ago as a daily, eyewatering running costs at the time.
