The Internet says that knackered drop-links can cause this too although I'm not sure how.

I can see how knackered drop links would cause this. They'll have movement in them due to being knackered, then this movement would be highlighted more by having the force of the brakes applied to them.

Kind of like with a bicycle you can feel the headset bearings are fucked when you brake and the whole fork and handlebars move / wobble a little bit.

Posted

Ah righto. I'm not sure which is more expensive to replace so I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

I've been trying to think about how I would have warped the brakes as surely it's something that can't happen naturally.

I'm not a heavy brake user as I like predicting traffic and coasting where possible. I don't ride the brakes while driving like a giffer. I try not to hold the car on the brakes at junctions too much as I know this can warp discs although it's a bit of a bad habit I have so maybe this is the culprit.

Saying that, though, I was mightily pissed off the other day when I did a tyre pressure check and was told that the passenger's side front tyre was at 15 or 16PSI. Pissed off because it looked perfectly fine when stationary. I know this could also cause uneven tyre wear/brake wear.

Plan is to finally do the front springs (Old Man can never be arsed) and get some tyres on over the bank holiday weekend.

I was just reading that VW are going to have to crush 300,000 of the 500,000 cars effected with the emissions issues.

But it looks like there’s no hope for the roughly 300,000 first generation cars. “New parts won’t physically fit under the bodywork of those vehicles,†says Brauer.

VW could sell them to markets with less stringent environmental policies but that's not going to look very good for them. Seems like a massive waste. I guess they could fix them but the engineering costs would be high.

Posted

^^^^ That will do the environment a lot good.

Actually, yes.

Instead of building 300k more cars for the developing markets, sell on cars that are already in existence. A lot of the environmental harm done by a car is in its production too.

Was going to take the door apart today and try to finally fix my sticking window but of course it started to rain.

So took the seat covers off for a wash.

Right then - any Allegro experts out there ???? I've bought a brown Allegro As reported earlier in news 24) blind and hopefully will be collecting very soon.

The story is that it's been with the last owner 11 years and it's now showing 50k. in 2008 it had a load of work done including work to the gearbox (new 5th gear and circlip is all it states on the invoice).

Story is that he set off from a junction and heard a loud bang and lost drive. On the tow home he noticed that the speedo was not working. It's been sat in his garage ever since. It's still MOT'd and judging by pics is a very tidy motor indeed. (It's an E series 1500) The clutch works fine/you can select any gear but no drive whatsoever.

So anyone have any ideas? anyone know of a good mechanic in the Yorkshire area (i'm too busy to do this myself) does anyone have a spare gearbox? any help greatly appreciated.

Yes. Ed at Little Garage Classics in Halifax is a BMC/BL specialist and I'm sure he'd be able to help. O788O 862552

It's possible that the driveshaft has snapped of course.

Posted

I'd go for driveshaft too.  Perhaps unseated rather than snapped, especially if a hub nut hasn't been tightened up.

Good old Internet - anti roll bar links causing brake judder ! What a load of old pony . Not all jobs can be fixed by Google

My SD1's been taken to Viking Vehicle Services in York ever since it needed previous mechanics' good* work undoing. The proprietor's a bit of a nutcase but he knows his stuff, particularly if it's old and British.

Not much, but made up some  work pieces to weld into the front mounts. SHould see it through to lifes end :)

Thanks for all the feedback guys - all digested and much appreciated, i've not seen it yet just trying to arrange a collection that fits with my work.

I did think driveshafts myself to be honest - on a plus note I've just found another brown Allegro that is being broken up and no ones touched it yet. It's not been advertised so I have first refusal on the bits - seeing it next Thursday.

This evening I fitted a new lift pump to the Discovery. It needed a jump off the work van to get going but ran really sweetly so I took it for a test drive up the hill.

At this point it broke down, fortunately it fired back up for long enough to climb back up into the carpark and bimble down the hill to the house I'm doing up. After sitting there for half an hour it was running fine so maybe Ms C will make it back from her mission to Aldi?

Someone's got a bargain on that Impreza at £560.

Speaking of which I found an ad for Dink's WRX wagon on Auto Trader @ £1395 - I'm guessing the ad just hadn't been removed?

Hmm, that's definitely my car. Same pics as when I bought it so hopefully it's just not been cancelled.

I'll message the seller and see what's up.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Don't forget only the E-series engined Allegros are five speed gearboxes. You probably know that, but just in case.

I was once following a Maxi (same powertrain as your Allegro) up the ramp in a carpark when it stopped and began to roll back, with much revving noise.

I could see the problem because it had no hubcap on the front O/S wheel.

When the clutch was let in, the driveshaft nut rotated, but the wheel didn't: hub / driveshaft splines had failed.

Hope your problem is as easy to fix.

I do feel bad about the problems you've had with the Victor, Skizzer.

Don't feel bad, it's not your fault! "Old car in slightly crap running shocker." :-)

Thanks for the advice and empathy chaps, I'll have a proper fettle when I next get a couple of days at home.

The exhaust is an easy fix, it just needs a clamp or something at the tailpipe end - the rubber hanger is a bit knackered and lets it swing too much so it fouls the towbar beam when it's spluttering. It's fine in normal running.

Soz for moaning.

It's just the price we pay for pissing around with old cars. I've literally got no time for tinkering with more than one at a time anymore so I'll be selling my p6 when I sort out the cooling problem.  I was going to sell the cortina but I've put so much time into it I think it'd be a shame not to keep it for the summer at least.

Buy the entire front end of the car if its not already rusted out, because if yours isn't already held together by no more than a mixture of paint, underseal and dead flies it soon will be....going to pick up a new front end for mine on Saturday  :-P

I am in Tunbridge Wells. On the way, I saw an old 'new' Skoda.

That's Skoda_Norman's current hack. It's quite a shed, but rare to see such an early 'new' Octavia.

Had a great drive down in the XM, though as I got to Kent, I started to have gear selection issues. Feels like the clutch is dragging. Also, the bloody windscreen washers on my side have packed up again. Shame you have to remove the sodding scuttle panel to get the things out. I think they need removing and properly cleaning out.

On the plus side, the previous tank of fuel netted a 49.5mpg average. Bargetastic!

Note to self - removing the door rubber bump strips from a 10 year old car expecting the paint underneath to not be fucked is fucking stupid

£42 lesson learnt

I nipped into b&q on the way in to work and picked up a pair of these work lights - reduced to £6 each

99% of other R56 Binis I see out on the roads are constantly driving round with the sidelights on, or whatever light it is that's in the top half of the bumper mounted foglight unit on R56s. Basically working as daytime running lights.

The mother's doesn't have (working) DRLs, and I've worked out why - it's because it's an auto. 07-on Binis have BMW EfficientDynamics, and it's evidently some part of that system that turns on the sidelights.

Because auto boxes have their own ECU - it must do considering it has a button to disable the ESP and a sport switch, you can't run EfficientDynamics (let's face it, boring mode on the auto does the same job, keeping revs low etc), and as such, no DRLs.

Just on my way to the Isle of Wight. ShatNav decided it didn't want to work and just keeps freezing every time a route is selected. Looks like new (read: second hand) SatNav is needed as my job involves a lot of travelling.

Anyone got a 'Nav for sale?

Just download offline maps to your phone (if you have a smartphone).  That's what I did when I went to the US.  Worked well enough.
