Mo: if you have smartfone try Waze or other phone based satnav.

I used to use Sygic on my android phone and it was gr9. Now on windows I use the inbuilt maps and navigation or Waze.

Yo LS, my shatnav got stolen with my car a few weeks ago.

As an executive gentleman with a budget to match, I bought a tomtom one for a fiver off of gumtree. This is old and small screen by modern standards but the latest maps and OS are readily piratable, where as tomtom would have had my pants down for £30+ for a new map on my old (newer) one.

You should be able to get a tomtom one or oneXL for sub 20quid, and I can help you out with getting the maps sorted if you drop me a PM.

This evening I fitted a new lift pump to the Discovery. It needed a jump off the work van to get going but ran really sweetly so I took it for a test drive up the hill.

attachicon.gifIMG_20160425_195018987_HDR.jpg

At this point it broke down, fortunately it fired back up for long enough to climb back up into the carpark and bimble down the hill to the house I'm doing up. After sitting there for half an hour it was running fine so maybe Ms C will make it back from her mission to Aldi?

Probably fine now.

When the lift pump fails you can get airlocks in the fuel line & filter. Takes a while for it all to bleed through.

Mind you, if it keeps doing it lift the rear seat & take off the round inspection plate. Chances are the metal pipes out the tank have rusted & it's sucking in air.

Cheers lads. I use my works phone to guide me around on Google Maps but would rather an old skool TomTom/plug-in thing. Google Maps costs a lot of data and I don't have data usage on my phone as it eats up money/credit, plus the battery gets eaten up. I'll find myself an old SatNav soon anyway.

Sygic and some others use offline maps, so you download them on wifi and store them on the phone - 0 data usage on the go.

When the sat nav app is in use you will usually be in a car, so it can be plugged in & charging, so battery will be fine.

Sweet man. I'll give that a go. Can't be any worse than an old SatNav. Also, BMW alarm going off like a good 'un because: Ferry.

I use Navmii, which is free and also doesn't use data when on the move.  Not completely free of glitches but perfectly adequate if you've got a road atlas and a dash of common sense, even for getting around London in a lorry.

Navmii. Free and uses open street maps. No data usage but chomps through your phone battery so make sure it's plugged in.

Sometimes it's a bit wayward in its planning but it'll get you where you need to go and is pretty up to date.

Ceri beat me to it!

Also - Mo, I wanna word with you at some point!

Became a transit van driver today. Cycled to pick it up ( chilly but sunny). Brand new silver long wheel base. £45 the day. Round the m25 to St. Albans, fill with lab equipment and glassware and drive back. It was ok- six speed diesel ( no idea what size), and very like my colleagues new focus inside.

Gutless in 6th though, and it seemed happier in cruise control on the motorway- not as choppy, but this could just have been my driving. It also suggested that you needed to change up on the dash ( not sure if this is a van thing or just for bad drivers ).

I am sure I confused lots of motorway drivers by indicating and using mirrors. I also left it tuned to R3! I Drove rather gently on the way back with £15 k of instrumentation and another £5k of glassware wedged in the back.

Dropping it off after work I was just getting back on the bike when there was a huge flash and instant clap of thunder and it started to snow! Now sitting at home next to the radiator with a large glass of Shiraz to warm up.

Try here from the play store. It's Nokia's maps app and is offline so download the map via WiFi and no data charges.

Back home. The XM's niggles really do get annoying when you're doing over 500 miles in two days in it, but the last part of the journey was simply EPIC. This is a few miles from home.

There was snow on the M4, and hail AND snow as I came over the mountain road. So, I'm glad it's still on the winter tyres.

I hope you saved it into all the memory positions of the radio ready for the next driver!

Yep, the 13 reg transit at my work has that change-up light. I think a lot of moderns have it for eco-driving or some bollocks reason. I just tell it to fuck off while I hammer it off the limiter*. :D

*Not really.

You have a MotoG don't you Mo?  On mine I just find the destination on the Google maps app that is on the phone while sat in the office on wifi.  Switch the data off then set to drive.  All the satnav and none of the data usage.

If you take the phone out of it's case it will sit in the cupholder of a good few cars and vans too.

I'm chuffed as the fleet seems to all be working again.  The Discovery has been reasonably well behaved today and the 405 went into the garage for about 3 hours.  He couldn't get the bits so fixed what was there for £20 which was rather better than the £300 that the other garage quoted.  I just need to bleed the system properley (I assumed he would need to so didn't before).

I do indeed have a MotoG (works phone so I just use the data on that) I pick Google Earth, plan a route out and follow the plan like a road map rather than use the actual SatNav on it as it uses data and as the company are paying the bill I don't want to receive a telling off from them for using too much data.

Cheers again lads, will have to download something on my phone as a back up. ShatNav has miraculously sprung to life again after a bit of some resetting, it seems to work Ok now, it kept thinking I was on the M40. All seems well for now.

Andy - I'll try and call you over the next few days.

As much as I like taking photos of the XM, and driving it on motorways, I really don't like driving below 40mph in it. The gearchange really isn't nice, and was getting very reluctant at times. I think the clutch may be dragging. Maybe it's just that I'm absolutely knackered after driving over 500 miles in it, but there's nowt like a really long journey to really make you see how you feel about a car. Though, I think the main thing I want is another automatic. That bloody Honda...

Problem is, the XM isn't an easy car to replace. I'd love something a bit smaller and more nimble, but then there goes the towing capacity. There aren't many cars that can combine such comfort and 50mpg either (Rover 75 gets close, but the desirable diesel auto can't do 50).

I did a lot of thinking on the way home but didn't reach any conclusions.

I'll send you a PM rather than clog up the thread.

Expect loud coughing and rasping noises. I'm not a dirty phone call!

It's good to buy an atlas and learn to get your bearings around the country. Sat nav's are great to pinpoint your destination but if you've an idea where you're going in the first place, it's amazing how little you really need one.

I have one and one on my phone. Over the past couple of weeks roaming around the midlands in the bus, I haven't used either navy for a while.

Clio went this evening, to a shiter from Lincs so you can probably guess who. Doing it like a pro on a weekday evening. So I'm currently sitting here hoping he makes it back OK. I never rest properly until I've heard a shiter has made it home!

about the sat nav thing - it usually is on as an eta prompt rather than where to go as thats usually (even in europe) fairly obvious untill you get to a city or town and start looking for places.......

Didn't do much with the fleet today apart from blowing up a flat tyre on the Maestro and having a little drive with the sunroof open.

Two hours later:

In other news I'm not really getting on with the modern.  It's an easy, relatively quick car to drive and has a cracking stereo, just not giving me any pleasure in owning or driving it.  As it's a 2wd model I can't even look forward to off roading it in the future.  I rejected the 4wd panda as I didn't like the 6speed gear box and was another 5k!

Now I'm hankering after a late mk3 4x4 Panda, with aircon, low miles.  Found one locally and will be looking at it on Thursday.

I've "lost" as much as the mk3 would cost on the mk4 in the 13months I've owned it.

Mk3 4x4's are pretty sedate but solid performers, even going the WBAC route I'd end up with a few grand in the back pocket for fleet maintenance.

I could do nothing of course and wait for the "new" panda due next year, though it'll just be a facelift job and will damage the value of mine on its release.

Well no harm in looking I suppose.

I Had the horn for a mk4 for ages but after my mk3 broke down every single day I had to rely on it for work, I sacked that idea off. Maybe one day when I don't need to rely on it.

I got home just after midnight mate, no issues with the Clio on the drive home.

Another easy purchase from RobT car sales. Recommended seller.

Little sister can now have a choice of baby Volvo or early Clio.
