£800 for a Dolly SE with MOT sounds pretty reasonable - and it's an interesting beast, as it shows some BL marketing chops (what little they had) at odds with the age and image of the Dolly just a few years later.

Here's a map of the most popular car searches in Europe. It looks the UK and most of Europe is all about the BMW'z. Other than Belarus who spend their time perving over Hyundai Santa Fe's.

Thanks Captain 70s, that's really helpful although I'm starting to worry about it now! I'm sure it will be fine though.

Nah, as long as it doesn't knock or ditch all it's oil out it'll be reet. Mine knocks AND ditches all it's fuel and I've still done 10,000 miles in it!

Looking at that map of car brands is that Hyundai badge above VW in Ireland?

I think the reality it a bit different. Every time I'm home, it's nothing but fleets of Fords, Renaults and Astras!

I think Ireland is about spot on. Never seen so many Hyundais in one place.

Actually, that's just reminded me; next time I'm back, must get some pics of the Sirocco that the chap opposite my parents' is slowly bringing back to life (removing the usual tat that they have accumulated over the last 15 years)

A guy in a Focus was driving like a twat on the A82 this morning, leapfrogging when the road was far too busy in both directions. Every time he overtook someone had to take evasive action.

Five minutes later an unmarked police car passed with the blues on and a few miles later I saw the aforementioned twat being spoken to in the back of the police car.

I've been driving a lorry on private property. (Now, maybe I haven't got my licence yet and so I'm not insured either, but let's skip over this.)

Someone has complained, but nothing has come back yet. The lorry itself is a piece of piss to drive. Everything is automatic, I just occasionally steer. I'm normally a size 9 in footwear, but in ARCO boots I'm an 8. The pedals are closer together than in an AX and I can't feel the pedals in these boots, which makes it more 'fun'.

I've been hooking up to trailers, I need alot of help as it looks perfect to me, and I hook up... but when I get out, the lorry is almost at a 15 degree angle.

Speaking of trailers, if I shouldn't be driving lorrys in the yard, I really shouldn't be driving about with trailers attached. I can drive forward and reverse in almost a straight line. It's slightly pissed, but the idea is there.

I also tried reversing around a 90 degree bend, I have acres of space and I know what I have to do, but its not clicking. I could never get it into a trailer sized space.

I went with the driver to a drop off and he had to reverse it a few hundred feet, whilst dodging skips and vans... I'm putting it down to witchcraft.

Finally, I set the accident dash cam off, by driving over a bump. So, it might all be pointless anyway. When the footage comes back and shows me and the driver in the wrong seat.

Today I was welding the door on my 340 and my throttle cable went on fire what the fuck!

It would also happen that the throttle cable is fucked now, and it seems you can't buy them anywhere.

You need a better/bigger earth from engine to chassis!!

Posted

Most likely actually, this might explain why my charging light is always going mental.

Posted

Aye, everything else (engine mounts, exhaust mounts, suspension) is bushed or rubber mounted so your accelerator cable is the best earth if you're welding engine but clamped onto body or vice versa.

Could be worse, if it was drive by wire you'd have destroyed most of the ECUs :-)

Posted

Aye, I've heard of people setting light to their stainless brake lines when the earth strap drops off and they try to start the car (the only thing earthing the front hubs)

Posted

If your struggling to get a cable go to a motorbike shop , they could prob make you one or some sell a metal tin which contains a kit of cable and nipples

Posted

The annoying thing is I was clamped to the neg battery terminal, which bolts straight to the body.

I was thinking of getting some bike brake cable and bodging that on by looping through a couple of bits of chocolate block.

I'm lucky the carb didn't go on fire, the flame was pretty close to it.

Posted

^^ Thats the problem,right there

You need to get the earth clamp as close as you reasonably can to where you are welding, even if means cleaning up a bolt head or similar with a wire brush

Putting it to the battery neg is making all those amps go through parts of the car that won't like it,and the power will find the easiest way back to earth

Sounds like you got lucky tbh.....

You should be able to find somebody who can solder nipples onto bike brake cable.

I don't know if it's the same on the Volvo but I bought a genuine cable for my Renault 9 and you had to build it yourself.

New rear discs, pads and flexi hoses on the merc yesterday. Braking is now perfect with no grating grrr, grrrr, grrr noise. While he was here Dan also replaced the rocker cover gasket which was weeping from the rear indentations where the camshafts slide in. Just to be safe he then changed the ignition wiring - sections are available now for £9 ish so you don't need to change the whole thing.

The issue with the discs was that they were corroded on the inside, the outer faces looked fine, but the inner ones were pitted very badly. It's taken a long time to get this sorted and I should have had everything replaced the first time that they started grating which is probably two years ago. Anyway, the old ones were Mercedes parts and probably original given mileage. He's fitted Delphi ones instead if anyone wants to comment on them?

Only job left is that since having a new tyre fitted in February there's been a wobble at 60mph. Obv. Balancing which is annoying me as it was perfect before. My garage sorted it out not me, so I think I'll get it balanced again.

Then I think I'll book a very long weekend away in Scotland in it for some walking.

Got the new tyres and cat for the Frontera and screwed on the nicely glued number plate for its retest next week.

Won't be changing the side light bulb though. To change it it looks like all the battery clamp has to come off then the washer bottle out. Who designs these things without thinking of stuff like this?

Posted

Can't be as bad as dip beam bulbs on a rover 75!

A local 'old school' car spares shop will fit purchased items like bulbs and windscreen wipers free of charge. He is now seriously considering only fitting the wiper blades, as bulbs are " too much fecking hassle and I only have so much knuckle skin tha knows"

Got 60 MPG and <10 ppm for the first time. Quite chuffed. Now if only I could make it average that...

Any others here getting such figures?

Fell out of the camper this afternoon. Came out the drivers door carrying too much stuff - guessed where the step was - which didn't turn out well as I was too far to the left hand edge. The step turned over on itself, BASTID! I fell over with a sweary scream onto my left knee stuff flying everywhere and then landed up on top of the step which is now bent into the shape of my ribcage.

No-one bothered to find out what all the screaming was about - so I picked myself up and limped into the hoose for some Savlon for my wounded knee.

Since been back out again to pick up said step and throw it very hard into the long weeds. Not using that thing again, fecking lethal.

Not been ma week as I'm already on antibiotics for a chest infection so can't even console myself in the demon drink!

Like motorsports. Campers are dangerous.....

I went away this weekend to meet up with a few friends from way back, and took the Stellar for old time's sake :-) I was struggling to fit everything in so had to dig out my old trailer for stuff, but it towed pretty well if a little tail down!
