My first reaction was “surely Richard Osman can afford a rent increase?”, second was “they must bring back Yes Minister, the scripts would write themselves”.

Must be a BMW bike thing, I cursed my F800 when the key stopped turning in the ignition.

Turns out it was the key for the Peugeot van I'd hired that morning that almost fitted.

Idiot.

I know someone who left their Ducatis' key at home, but only found out after stopping for fuel a good few hundred miles away. .

Must have had a big fuel tank to do hundreds of miles 🤪

Doloshite charge light flickering on. Getting 15.9v at the battery varying with revs.

Fitted new* voltage regulator. Steady 14.1v at the battery.

A week later, charge light flickering on again.

Cool. 😑

So are the regulators getting fried by another problem or is it just shit repop parts?

*New in box, not ancient NOS. Still rustier than the bits already on the car...

I think deep down inside you already know the answer!

Check the earth. If the voltage reg doesn't have a good one, it'll let the alternator over-charge. Fried a battery in my 2CV because of that...

Also check the wiring to the charge light. It relies on the bulb to set up the field current.

Deffo a BMW thing. A mate of mine called a few months ago to jumpstart his. We connect the jump cables, press the button, nothing.  10 minutes of fiddling later, he realizes that the key is not in the ignition. 😄 His other BMW is keyless start.

Just nailed on my  freshly painted wing ..   not a terrible  mismatch  to the  27 year old paint is it  ?   The rest needs a wash and polish , i'm reasonably confident it'll  tone down and blend in, if i give it a few weeks to weather .

I'll give a heads up to Kent Panels and Paint , at the bottom of Bluebell hill  , Maidstone , they mixed the paint to code number..

I've just found out that Eastbourne is hosting a World Championship event on Sunday. It's a hill climb from the seafront to the top of Beachy Head. On open roads, weirdly. The vehicles? Penny Farthings.

I think it’s the law or something that if you are picking up something long and you own a convertible you must use that for the collection.

So dutifully despite more qualified vehicles on the fleet being available I collected my new windowsills from. wickes today…

So it turns out the 2009 XF 3.0 diesel I bought of FB marketplace is a dog. It has pissed me off a bit but my fault as I went in without doing any real checks and fell in love with the bloody thing. I don't even take it on a proper test drive and paid him the full amount. He must have seen me coming. It did have 5 clean MOT's which coincidentally is the number of years he owned it. The lack of recent service history should have given it away though.

I realised soon after purchasing it that the suspension was knackered and there were fumes in the car when idling. I took it to my local garage for a check over. They weren't that positive about it. See attached photo is you want a laugh.

The suspension issues can all be rectified but the exhaust leak (probably the flexi near the cats) is harder and the rear subframe is harder still. The sills might be a deal breaker. I need to check them before making any decisions. I bought this to replace an S type with rusty sills!

I took it out for a drive with my son tonight. We wafted for about 5 miles. Apart from the jiggly steering it was still a nice place to be.

Carwow etc are offering £800 to £900. I have never used such a company and the idea is not pleasant. I could fix it over time (£600 to £800 approx with my son ding it in his spare time) but that depends on the sills. I'm not chucking loads of money at a rusty car. We could strip it and I would get my money back but lose about 60 hours where I could be doing more useful things.

A good way to blow a grand in a week! I have 5 cars and this week I had to hire a f***ing nissan juke to drive someone to Manchester for work as they are all unsuitable or in a state of disrepair. 🙄

Have you had a look personally on how bad some of these points are? Now you've got a list at least you can focus in.

Especially on the big stuff like the sill. It might only be starting to go where a bit of rust remedy and paint will prolong it.

I've not looked yet but I intend to soon. The mechanic who checked it had a trainee mechanic with him so I'm wondering if they were being particularly picky. I'm tempted to try and fix it and I don't need it immediately. I think the sills are the main concern so we'll get the covers off and see how bad they are. Also, get it up on the ramps for a look underneath  I don't see it as a long term ownership proposition but would be nice to get two or three years out of it. I also don't like to give up on a car, which can be dangerous!

I didn't like to say it directly but I did wonder considering you haven't said it crash+banged everywhere which would often be a symptom of really knackered bushes and suspension parts. But can't really tell until a closer look and alternative opinion (even if yourself) is done.

Especially stuff like boots can be perished but not ripped. Could be perfectly fine for a few more years. Also brand new rubber doesn't seem to be the quality rubber used to be and anything replacement might last as long as the already perished stuff!

It comes down to how you really feel about the car. Yes, the shock has left a bitter taste, but then it could be seen as a running resto. That's how I'm treating both my Jag and Vectra. They are running working cars, but they are also both rusty, particularly the Vectra. But I'm working through the lists to get them mechanically as best as I can/I can afford. I love them both and woukd hope they'd both be with me for a long while yet.

I do quite like it. I will investigate further and report back.

Some success today. Finally removed the fuel tank from my MR2 with my son. We have the wrong fuel pump though so need to buy another one and putting it back looks fun as there are lots of puppies and limited space. I'm thinking of taking up another hobby!

Today was operation wash the dyane & 306. All achieved fairly easily with elbow grease and a pressure washer, then I went for a drive in the GS, only about 25 miles but also treated it to some super unleaded as its now being a good car (crossed fingers REALLY hard)

It seemed to confuse all the moderns at the petrol station, which is nice

Yes indeedy, it’s needed quite a bit of fiddling and faffing, still needs more but it’s getting towards actually properly useable slowly
