The new news 24 thread

It looks like the mighty roffle E220CDI is condemned, it needs an injector and the bolt securing it has stretched and damaged the thread - having it fixed at my friendly garage is approaching 4-figures and then there's the ongoing gearbox issue, and now an ABS fault.  I don't really need a car any longer (my wife's does everything and I WFH), but I'm not comfortable with the thought of not having my own - so am monitoring the shite-for-sale page hourly (I can't be arsed to do battle with the public on ebay, etc).  PM me if you have anything interesting you'd like to move on, budget variable.

Aye sometimes there's that line that has to be drawn. Had my E46 not been otherwise excellent, the gearbox issue would have seen it dispatched to a breakers or similar.

The clamping bolts are very close to the coolant passageways in the head, and very easy to break into by whilst being helicoiled..

Thirteen fourteen dead (so far) in canopy collapse over at Novi Sad railway station. 😔
The building was reopened, to much fanfare less than 6 months ago, just ahead of the elections.

Call me cynical, but no one will ever be held responsible for this monumental tragedy.

EDIT: Government officials are now saying that this canopy is over 60 years old, despite news when it was reopened , photos, and anyone who ever saw the fucking place can tell - that it was changed in reconstruction. What a bunch of fucking cunts. Words fail me.

Government-aligned media is already caught editing articles removing any reference to the new canopy and deleting photos of the railway station reopening. You can’t make this shit up. Wow. Just wow.
I don’t think I can put into words how terribly upset, sad and pathetic this makes me feel.

That seems, a terribly high death toll for what looks like a relatively small canopy. I assume it this one anyway.

Was it a busy time of day? It's just that this is the busiest picture I can find, most of the others have got hardly anybody underneath it at all.

The few pictures I can find show all those support struts completely missing. I guess if one snapped it set off a chain reaction. But as I say the canopy doesn't even look that heavy. It would have been fairly easy to make it self supporting and just have the struts as cosmetic additions. Too late to worry about that now though.

Yeah, mid-day, so probably not as bad as rush hour, but still very busy. That area is much bigger than it looks on the photo. It’s a smoking area and quite a few of waiting benches underneath it. Can’t find an average day photo of the place now, but I’ll be shocked if final toll is under 30.
It was a self-suspended reinforced concrete that they fucked with when renovating the building. They even attached a new gallery inside to it.

Yes, I found this picture without the new mezzanine level.

I guess nailing that on must have sent a fair few shock waves through the canopy mountings. I know it's easy to say in hindsight but you'd think somebody might have realised the possibility of this happening.

Looks like it's a suspended load off the roof, so they either fucked about with the tie bars or put more weight on the canopy without doing new calculations.

I'm sure you give lots of plumbing advice for free.

My point being, he told me something I already knew. It was just banter with him. You should try it sometime.

Actually I give advice almost daily for fuck all. Quite a lot on here and other forums as it happens.

That’ll be the latter.

IIRC in the US there was an incident where a 'second deck' was added to a suspended walkway.... 😕

A quick update on shite related shenanigans over the past few weeks.

The 2cv was pressed into commuting duties and got absolutely drenched in very wet weather, rain goes up the screen, under the hood and sprays me in the face. Not sure if can be mitigated against it it’s just a feature of the 2CV. It’s been cleaned and is now garaged, maybe until spring.

The P4 has been off the road while the master cylinder was sorted out. A recon one was sourced from a club member which featured a nice stainless sleeve inside the cylinder.  After fitting and bleeding the brakes feel marvellous and can even lock up on a dry road on hard braking. Great for such an old car I think. Some wrecked bushes in the front suspension were also replaced meaning it goes where I point it now. To celebrate I went on a quick 10 mile jaunt locally. It’s great fun to drive and it feels like I could drive it anywhere.

I had a broken injector bolt retapped on my PT cruiser at a cost of £80 odd. It had the 2.2 Merc diesel lump in it.

No, it really shouldn't do that...

Agreed, drove 2CVs and Dyanes for millions* of miles  and never a drop through the screen to roof join.

Interesting. The old hood was the same. I wonder what I’m doing wrong?

Have you got the rubber seal on the lip the right way around?

Sad news.  Am sure those injectors were supposed to be warranted but I doubt that extends to a new engine!

Rubber seal? I’m not sure it’s even got one.
