Earlier tonight I had to go and collect four youngsters who'd been enjoying St Patrick's Day drinks nearby. It seemed only right to use the Carina E, a natural for such taxi duties? Made a bit of a discovery on the way:

I knew the HRW worked OK, with every element still doing its thing - not bad for an old estate car. As it was a bit damp I thought I'd give the other switch a try, which I believe is for a heated element or two in the front screen. I don't know whether it did anything in that regard, I think it's more intended for snow/frost, but I discovered that's how the heated door mirrors are operated. Everything else I've had with heated mirrors they just work off the HRW switch, and I'd just assumed they didn't work any more. Result!

Perhaps even better was that there was no vomiting, so I didn't have to apply penalty charges.....

Caught speeding 7 times in one year!! 

Hang on...let's look at that a bit more closely...

1. 29mph in 20 Zone Embankment.

2. 28mph in 20 Zone Kensington Gardens.

3. A316 Twickenham 46mph in 40 Zone.

4. A316 Twickenham 46mpg in a 40 Zone.

5. A316 Twickenham 47mph in 40 Zone.

6. M25 intersection with M3 62mph in a 50 Zone.

 7. M4 73mph in temporary 50 Zone.

My experience of driving in London...

1.& 2. The 20mph Zones are in the main not observed by drivers and if you do drive at 20mph, as I do, you often get an angry tooting gesticulating mob behind - and inevitably overtaken by a black Audi and a white van.

 3.-5. This is the A316. Easy to lose track of your speed on here.

6. M25 intersection with M3 - Easy to lose track of your speed here.

7. M4 73mph in temporary 50 Zone - easy to get 'pushed' by other traffic to a higher speed as the 50 limit is only sporadically observed.

And the moral of the tale - pay attention and observe the limits - but do not get bullied to go faster than the limit or shadow other fast moving traffic - none of these convictions were for particularly egregious flouting of the limit and several were just over 10%+.

Sometimes takes an iron resolve - particularly in the 'temporary' 50mph's - on the M20 through Kent - I stick at 50 and am passed by 80% of traffic coming back into London.

As an aside the BBC reports that "as District Judge Daniel Sternberg disqualified the Tory environmentalist from driving, he warned that drivers who speed "emit more harmful emissions" even in hybrid and electric cars."

Interesting legal point there - that the judge is taking in the whole scope of these limits in his consideration of the offence ie not just the danger aspect.

Of course the admonishment may have been directed with some irony at Zac Goldsmith as a prominent "environmentalist" driving an electric car.

But the jist of the judgment is that some limits are indeed there to protect the environment overall. 

Interesting point of law bought out there.

As it happens I took the winter cover off the Subaru yesterday and run him up and down the farm track. Not sure if it was stale fuel or the often moody Hitachi carb but he wasn't at all happy.

It's still waiting for me to finish the repairs to the o/s rear inner wheel arch. I'd like to say this'll be the year but the new workshop is currently full of furniture and house hold tat.

If you look out of my kitchen window there's a lone tree pretty much exactly a mile away on top of a hill. About five years ago my old neighbour told me I should walk there and "see who's name is below it" in a way that suggested it would be personally relevant to me.

I always intended to, but never got round to it.

Yesterday I found myself feeling the need to escape for a while, so I set off along the footpath that would lead me there.

Most of the journey there was fine, it was along an official ancient right of way that sees a reasonable amount of traffic, though I didn't see any other people. The next stretch was along a single track road with basically no traffic. I took a slight detour to sit by the reservoir for a moment, then trundled on.

Eventually I reached the edge of the fields the tree sits above, at this point there seemed to be no way of reaching it but walking up the margins of the fields and climbing a fence, which I duly did.

I reached the tree and inspected it thoroughly, no names to be seen. Just a couple of initials carved a long long time ago.

At this point I decided my neighbour was winding me up, and sat on a log to have a cigarette and take in the view. Then I spotted a cross made of cut timber lying face down in the undergrowth, so I flipped it over...

 

It was a cross for a dog named Gillie who died in 2019.

 

I'm not really sure what significance, if any, this has.

At least I got a good walk out of it.

Looking on fb marketplace I spotted a nice free lander in my town, so message asked about it.. got a strange message reply.. so I thought smells bit fishy, ok ill bite and emailed with I'm asking about the car, but with no actual vehicle details... and then got all this in replys from 'janet' I thought nah I'll pass.. is it a scam?

Had a stainless exhaust made up for the Yaris. 

Sounds very subtle but fun. Just what it needed. The torque curve has really smoothed out, it doesn't scrabble for grip and tramp off the mark now.

Mate's Transit stolen from outside his house in Biddulph, North Staffordshire, in the early hours of this morning

CV62KOD, a silver hi top T300 with fairly distinctive amber flashers everywhere and lots of red/yellow reflective chevrons on the back doors. He doesn't particularly want it back once the scrotes have ripped it to bits/stuffed it into a convenience store for the fags and booze, but the hand tools and clothes etc etc that were inside would be nice to get back.

Update: 1994 Tipo 1.4ie which FTP'd last July and was recovered to a garage:    Don't get too excited.  Hardly anything has happened except that I've had a brief discussion with the garage.  We agreed that as it was a 'back burner' job in a busy garage it was unlikely to receive attention in the foreseeable future.  In the next week (+/- a few days) it will be made accessible to a trailer or whatever so that I can have it transported to my house where I can tinker with it and generally ponder its future.  Towing is not possible because it is SORN'd and no longer MOT'd or insured. Although I've missed having the option of driving a vaguely interesting, practical, manual car, in all honesty it has been quite convenient to have just two cars outside the house.  My '61 Reliant is still with me and roadworthy/road legal but requires considerable enthusiasm to clear its way out of my garage, something which is lacking these days. It rarely gets driven.

Rather than just give up on the Tipo (it was tempting), I'm hoping that circumstances will allow something favourable to happen in the next several months. I can always polish it to improve my morale and extend its period of grace for a while.

Fuck right off then, I'll have it recovered to a bloke down the road who has no fear of anything. He has had it for about 3 weeks & has had it in a million pieces for much of that time. The new radiator, uprated fan & relay all turned out to be pants, he's replaced the lot again along with a temp sensor and all manner of other crap that I really don't even pretend to understand. It wasn't HGF, but whatever it was, has been well & truly sorted.

This garage was recommended by someone on here, to someone else ages ago  and I made note of it long before I actually bought the car. When I took the car in, there were pictures of Dave and a very different looking Kaylie. But hey, you live and learn and I won't be going back.
