😂 Unfortunately it has been living in a hedge for the best part of 30 years, never mind putting you through one.  I can confirm it rolls, and so you can indeed sit in it and make brum brum noises, but thats about the extent of its abilities at the minute.  Last moved under its own steam at some point in the eighties I would have said.

It used to be my Granddads till he died 18 months or so ago, but lack of facilities, storage and time at the minute mean its being transported out of my possession, not into it unfortunately (well, assuming it sells at auction this weekend anyway).  

I know 911s arent autoshite bread and butter, but given its a '68, a sportomatic (semi-auto), has triple webers (who doesnt like triple webers?!?), is mustard coloured, has the small engine (2.0 flat 6) and is buggered, I guess it qualifies.  The state of it is even more upsetting when you realise he had plenty of covered storage, but it was full of other, less useful or interesting crap, so this sat in the open on a drive for years instead

It has been around all my life, and I've always, always, ever since being a tiny kid and playing in it, thought I would put it back on the road one day, but real life gets in the way sometimes.   I'm secretly hoping it doesnt sell 😁

I suppose I could equally put in in the 'grumpy' thread, but given my main reason for posting was  to thank Ceri, that might have been a bit of a back-handed compliment 😂

I saw pics of that one online recently! Shame it's leaving you but I reckon it's going to cost a ton of money to restore! I would love an early 911 but that will probably never happen

His Horizon is probably of interest also, that's going to auction too so I gave it a quick wash and hoover, it's a 1500 automatic with power steering and only 33000 miles, it's not my bag if I'm honest but it's a nice enough old thing.

No it's cool, he bought it to sell on again, it's a bit of a experiment to see if cleaning it up properly and doing a few little jobs will make more money though a auction like the ACA.

It's already all booked in and being collected next week now

Brave move doing that on something unusual. I always put sales of those sort of cars as needing the right person in the room (or online) who is prepared to bid for our of the ordinary. 

Hopefully also the market will perk back up for him as it's taking a right dump at the moment. Of course I could have predicted it, with me intending to sell two cars at the moment. 🤨

People keep saying the markets flat at the moment and struggling but I haven't seen It myself, my Golf sold quickly and I had someone interested in my Mondeo until I changed my mind, I still think if the cars a good one and well presented then there's plenty of people out there with money happy to spend it still.

Well doing something out of the ordinary in business can work well and be successful. Even though I don't think it'll work, that's the whole point of trying something new to see what works.

When doing a startup of anything, there will always be plenty of people saying that idea won't work. Key thing that was taught to me is to ignore, keep faith and keep trying. If it really isn't working then pivot if an opportunity arises that looks sensible. The real trick is knowing when to pivot and what to pivot.

I reeeealllly dont want to sell it - I love early 911s/912s, and to have one on your drive, with a family connection, and be selling it, is ridiculous, as I may well never be able to afford/justify one again, however this car, and this timing is just no good for us 

There are a few of Granddads various vehicles that I would have kept if it was 10 years ago, or probably 10 years in the future, but being surrounded by 84 years worth of his hoarding has reminded me that sometimes its better to be pragmatic than just hold onto it and let it fall apart even more before I can get to it.

I could get the 911 back on the road no problem if I kept hold of it for 5/10 years while I get other more pressing things sorted, but I am a (semi!) skilled amateur, not a restorer, and the car is probably worth a proper restoration (not to mention I dont think I could afford the parts it will need at early 911 prices either)

Plus, my ideal early 911 or 912 would probably be a bit of a bitsa/outlaw to get the bits I want - This one is knackered, but all original, so I would rather let someone else have a go at this one, restore it properly, and when I am (maybe) ever in a position to buy one in the future, I can get one thats already been buggered about a bit and I wont feel so bad.

As you can see, it hasnt been an easy decision 😂  In fact I am pretty sure I am still trying to convince myself 😁

Took the 'BIG' Merc to my local garage to book it in for various bits doing. 

Part of the job was to fit a new water pump and thermostat, which the previous owner had supplied with the car. The water pump is OEM. When mentioned that I already had the necessary bits......
"We don't fit customer supplied parts" - came the blunt answer.

Fair on a modern, where they are expected to provide some sort of warranty on the repair, but on a 34 year old Merc?

I said I'd waive any liability on the repair. Rude knob behind the counter just repeated "We....don't....fit....customer....supplied....parts" slowly as if I was a moron.

Guess I won't be returning there again. 

I'd do it myself but, short of draining the cooling system over a local street drain, I don't have the facilities to do it. 

 

Bobbed it an old school garage near to work, greeted by a chap in overalls. "Yep, absolutely no problem, however can't get you in for a couple of weeks".  I've booked it in, as it's not leaking, just the tell tale slight rumble of a dry bearing.
