I have shite en route to me, completely unplanned and I had no idea I was buying until 2 pm today, I don't do spontaneous but the seller certainly does

Is it me or have I potentially found hen's teeth shit?

Is it, just maybe, possibly a rhd heater control valve?

£100 posted though.

We had an identical one but in Citron that I bought from my brother for £30 in 1987. I couldn't call it unmolested, though. The tester said it looked like it had been attacked by moths and crocodiles. But 20 minutes later passed it as I'd welded up the underneath and attended to the brakes.

I bet the foreman would love to see this....

This is the next join along where the main issue is, they’ve basically lathered it in paste so it was quiet when he collected it, then the bottom has fallen off leaving it blowing like mad…

Shite photo as it’s a screenshot from a video but I can’t even tell if there’s a gasket in there! Shocking workmanship

Obviously he needs to take it back. But given the state of work I think he needs the money back and go somewhere else.

He’s saying he’s just gonna do it himself as the main issue he had them do it was the fact all the bolts were old and seized.

IMO his main issue is the left hand section which is the old part, looks warped so it’s never going to seal right….

Also learned that Volvo Dark Grey 228 looks to be a reasonable match for Flint interiors, not a perfect match, but certainly close enough to spruce up tired and faded items without them looking too out of place.

Now the paint is actually dry I can show you how close a match that is.  It's as close to perfect as I could realistically hope for a colour from another manufacturer that's not even intended for interior trim.

From some angles it's more obvious than others that the repainted trims are in fact repainted.  The saving grace is the slight variation in tones on the original plastics and the fact that these trims sit low down in the car so they do blend very well in person.  A bit of time will see the paint finish dull down a bit further (the satin top coat hasn't fully cured yet) and a deep clean of the interior will darken the original plastics a bit and then they'll blend a lot better.  As for how it will wear, that will all depending on user interface.  For me, this finish should wear pretty well for a long time but if you're more rough with interiors it might not so repainting plastic trims isn't the right solution for everyone.

Surprised they can get their overalls on over the spurs and cowboy boots.

I suspect if the person in charge finds out somebody will be getting their cards.

Shite like this ruins reputations.

I serviced my astra the other week, after 8k miles. The air filter was so clean, I wondering if I should just reuse it. That looks like it's never been replaced. Ever.

My Caddy air filter after 20k miles.

I often think about not bothering but they're only £10.

You're probably right that the Qashqai one has never been changed.

Indeed, but if it’s a new guy they should be checking the work before signing it off.  I’m sure the Porsche owner won’t be going back there and will tell all his friends not too as well

Dug the Mazda 121 out of the garage today in preparation for its impending trip to the scrapyard.  I still feel bad scrapping such a rare beast but I need the garage back and nae fecker wants the car so I'm left with little choice.  To my surprise it started straight up with no need for the jump pack - not bad for having sat for four months or so, I'm going to have to keep the battery when I scrap it I think.

That was about the only thing that went well today - I went to move the Visa so I could temporarily stick the 121 in its space but the fuel pump appears to have shat itself.  It's not pumping anything out and when I tried to prime it by taking the fuel pipe off the carb and sucking the petrol up so it fills the fuel filter, as soon as I stopped the fuel ran straight back to the tank.  So it's new fuel pump time, which looks like an awkward twat of a job.  The electric pump fitted by Lankytim is still in situ so when I get a moment I'm going to plumb that back in so the car is mobile - it's not a long term solution though as the pump operates at too high a pressure for the engine.  I didn't attempt it today because it's rather awkward to access the fuel lines under the car without it being up on ramps, and I had a twinge in my back earlier when lugging stuff out of the garage so I thought it best not to try crawling under the car.

This evening I went to mow the lawn and the string for the pull start snapped.  So I wasted another half an hour taking the pull start mechanism to bits, cutting off the frayed bit of string and putting it all back together - it's now shorter obviously but it still works.  I can't really complain as the mower has far outlived its original intended lifespan - I bought it secondhand off Gumtree for 30 quid about 11 years ago, thinking that if it did me a year or two I'd have had my money's worth, but the bloody thing just keeps on going.

The LDV is being a pain in the arse to start again, the battery keeps going flat even though I've fitted a cut off.  I think the battery itself might be tired, and it's also undersized for the van which probably isn't helping.  Neither of my jump packs will start the van on its own (which is slightly disappointing as the Noco at least is supposed to be able to start a 3-litre diesel from dead flat) but when I put them on in parallel they have just about enough oomph between them.  I've taken the battery off and stuck it on charge, I really don't want to have to fork out for a new one if I can help it...

I've lost track of how many parts of different vehicles are in here now, transit van, Kawasaki carbs, land rover bits on the front struts...

Should have just left the push rod in it and called it a day.

Popped the fuel tank out of the Volvo 145 to inspect it and clean it out. It looks in good shape but has lots of rust flakes inside. The fuel sender was seized but should be useable.  The fuel line into the tank is metal due to the proximity of the exhaust back box and I managed to snap the 90 degree elbow on the side of the tank. Doh! I then made things a whole lot worse by failing to extract the broken piece of thread, resorting to drilling it out and trying to tap it and then hearing the fuel pick-up pipe falling off inside the tank. I’m not totally sure what do to now but I could perhaps fashion a length of pipe to act as the pick up and solder/glue it into the existing hole in the tank.

Not worried are you? Seems in fine fettle whenever I see it!

The boss was busy this weekend, and so I was going to be lulling around the house being bored and doing boring stuff like cutting the lawns. My mums side of the family have been visiting the same area of Cornwall since the 50s, and are all down for their annual pilgrimage, so I popped off to see them, and my brother who is down early for boardmasters. After a nice weekend seeing lots of people, and doing lots of walking, I plodded home, and managed to catch a milestone I’ve been chasing since I bought the car, 62,000 miles ago in 2019.

How satisfying, a perfectly placed lay-by on the A30 made it possible. I’ve managed to take it to 10 different countries since purchase, and it’s been a good car.

I knew that the osf brake was dragging so I knew that would need seeing to. The garage have just rung to say that it has failed on the brakes  plus there are a couple of spots that need the attention of the sparkly stick. 🙁 Considering that this is my first MOT failure since the Fiesta back in 2019 out of a fleet of four which receive virtually no maintenance I reckon I haven't done too badly. I'll be going to pick it up in a bit and find out how much it'll cost to get it sorted. 😟

Doesn't sound too bad then! Maybe we should both get out back ends up on some ramps at the next fod and share an afternoon with a wire brush and some krust whilst the weather's still good 😅
