Off out to the shops now

Shops in Inverness or further?

Glad it is finally here, hope it doesn't throw too many obstacles in your path but all part of the journey.

Well what an absolute arsehole of a job that turned out to be.

Firstly the driveshaft wouldn't go into the gearbox properly - it would go in far enough to engage the splines but not fully in, so the seal wasn't made at the gearbox end and the intermediate bearing wasn't in its housing properly.  Took half a dozen attempts to get it to go in right.

Then the fun started.  The HBOL says to lever the bottom arm down with a crowbar and manoeuvre the hub carrier balljoint into its hole.  This was almost doable, except that to get the balljoint over the end of the arm the hub had to be pulled out just far enough that the end of the driveshaft would fall out, and then wedge itself against the inside of the hub so I then couldn't swing the hub assembly back in to get the balljoint into its hole.  I must have tried a dozen times or more - there was only a few mm in it, but it was enough to make it unworkable.  I did briefly consider trying to hold the driveshaft into the hub by putting the bolt in loosely, but I was afraid that I'd then just pull the inner CV joint apart again.

Trying to jack the strut up didn't work either - it would just swing backwards, taking the line of least resistance as with the lower arm detached there was nothing holding it in position longitudinally so swinging back was easier than compressing the spring.  I even tried holding the strut forward using a ratchet strap, but that didn't work either.

In the end I ended up having to unbolt the hub carrier assembly from the strut - I was then able to get the balljoint back in and tightened, wangle the driveshaft into the hub and then lever the hub assembly back in line with the strut with a BFO screwdriver so I could get the bolts back in.  If I'd followed what Mr Haynes was saying I'd still be out there now.

It's all back together now - I haven't taken it for a proper drive yet but I drove it out of the car park and manoeuvred it into its usual roadside parking space, which involved going from lock to lock both forwards and in reverse, and it moved as it should with no unpleasant graunching noises, so I'm going to call it fixed.

I'm knackered now though - I was going to have a crack at the water leak on the Tempra, but I think that's going to have to wait until next weekend.

I attempted to clean/polish the headights on the SLuK as they were looking a tad dull and manky. I did a half arsed job and then went and bought the Armoral wipes. They did a great job and it looked fine for about 24 hours when it looked TERRIBLE! All spotty and scabby. There must have been some old lacquer on the lights or something as it reated something awful. Sadly, I had also wiped the same stuff on the black portion of the 'C' pillars... with the same results!

I had previously ordered carbon fibre wrap for the 'C'pillars as I wanted to give it a try but it took three attempts for me to get the measurments correct, plus I changed my mind and wanted posh shiny CF so I eventually ended up with 1.5 X 1 metres of 3M posh stuff and then the other two lots turned up weeks after the initial orders. Ho hum...

These are the before pictures but after I used the Armoral shit...

And these were after! Sorry for the mucky car, I did clean it afterwards... should have been before obviously but... cretin!

So it was back to the headlights. I used the Autoglym kit I bought ages ago, it has dozens of circular pads which mount on a thing that goes into the drill but as I had killed my drill the first time round, I did them by hand! 800, 1500, 2000 and then 3000 had them looking pretty good and then finally with the polish in the pad and using the last dit of drill got them  to a happy place.

When they had dried out and everything had calmed down, I used some special polish (no idea what it is, came with a kit I bought to do touch-ups on the bloody Bentley!) and they look ACE!!!!

All I managed to do today was get rid of one of the spare 2cv seat frames to another local club member who arrived in his black and red Charleston. Mild excitement as he took a wrong turn on the drive and ended up speaking to the royal protection squad on the intercom. Apparently they knew where he wanted to go as they told him “ you’ll be wanting the other 2cv owner”. He was on the cctv too!

That is a seriously smart looking motor.  I'm mildly jealous.

Kangoo has a leak. But its not engine oil. Its one of the hydraulics. I gave it a spin around some lanes yesterday and got a stop warning along with the handbrake light so im thinking its brake fluid. Its stopping fine and the light went off again so i better investigate it.

Also its difficult to start first time the last few days.

I pumped the tyres today. Thats all i have done to it so far

..... some dolt who was interested until he asked me how many previous owners it had had.

Eight is apparently 'too many' on a 35 year old car. ...

If it's any consolation, I'm the CX's 7th owner in 32 years, so I'd say that's average.

I distinctly agree with you and don't see the issue.

More work on the Stilo SW. As the nearside door was getting harder to close yesterday. Which is courtesy of some previous bodger. So I decided today to try and fix it, before it fell off.

IMG_20200517_154240.thumb.jpg.e5f3dc5719219bf90f45a0f382e7990e.jpg

Ignore the bolt on the left as I'd already undone it at this stage. The other bolt above on the lower hinge was already loose, because it's way too long! Which in turn was causing the door to drop when opened.

So after failing to unscrew it, as I couldn't get a spanner or socket on the other end to stop it spinning. I decided to bite the bullet and take the door off. Not what I wanted to do today, but needs must.

IMG_20200517_160316.thumb.jpg.fa32ef74cc2681ce935bc8042cb1af9d.jpg

Door off and the bolt was then easily removed. So with a new bolt and alot of faffing. The door was bolted back together.

Only problem was the door was even worse!

Annoyingly this ment I had to take the door off again. As after some head scratching. It turned out that the upper hinge, was also loose and missing a bolt from inside the A pillar.

At this point I was expecting a Curry for dinner, so didn't take any more pics in the rush to get it back together.

Thankfully got it back together ok this time and got to enjoy my curry.

I'll have to take it off again. As the current door has a ruddy big dent in it. Annoying I have a replacement door but it's miles away.

On the plus side, least the hinges should be ok for next time.

Week off work, Almera N16 aircon stopped working just during our hot weather recently so I'm at a Wilco Fast Fit getting it checked out. Aircon has never been recharged since my ownership of 9.5 years.

Apparently there's a leak so there's an extra charge to investigate. Given its been so long I'm happy to pay the extra. :)

Delayed news from Friday, I was a little grumpy.

Drains blocked, plumbers with rods called. I had to move the 75, the 944 & the T2 to let them access the manhole covers. 75 & T2 not a bother, drove them around the block, parked them up and went back for the Porsche. Fired up, drove it around the block, backed it onto its new parking space on a driveway a few doors up the street. What the fuck is it leaking? Fuel! Great big stripes of the stuff.

Plumbers cleared many tonnes of shit & advised that my drains had collapsed & would need replacing.

Porsche is leaking from the pipes as they duck under the back axle - specialist told me that TADTS

That's booked in for June the 2nd - Autoaid will apparently deal with breakdowns at home - and take it to local garage.

Still waiting for a couple of quotes for digging up drive/fitting new drains/re-laying drive...

Happy fucking xmas!
