Porsche Taycan

Go on, cut me some slack, there's just a hint of resemblance?

Why is the new Porsche named after an Irish workman's beverage receptacle?

I was following a newish Range Rover Somethingorother earlier (not the proper one, but there seems to be eleventy pointless variations on the theme now).  I've seen lots of moderns which switch their DRLs off when the indicators come on - which is fair enough as some DRLs are brighter than the sun and you wouldn't see the indicator next to them - but on this Range Rover the tail light and indicator appeared to be occupying the same space, so that when the driver indicated the tail light went out.  Surely that can't be legal?

That Taycan looks like its mascara has run.

What a boring looking car.

I agree about it being boring though I 'd say it looks like it's crying. Maybe it was designed by that angry squirrel from the once seen can't be unseen thread lol

Bet the Porsche's wipers aren't as cool as the Panhard's though.

I might just be looking at buying a cheap and cosmetically challenged runaround to see me through the rough patch I'm having with my fleet at present.....ideal WBOD material

Not got a great deal done on the fleet in the last week or so as I've been busy with other stuff, but the Renault 6 is now proudly sporting its new £13 Eurocarparts battery, after I splashed out a further £3 on terminal sleeves to take the terminals from smoll Japanese size to normal European size.  It doesn't seem to spin the engine over much faster than the old battery, but it'll definitely keep cranking for longer - not hugely surprising as the old battery was the one that was on the car when I bought it 12 years ago, and it was far from new then.  For some reason the 6 seems to be one of those cars that takes a lot of electricity to spin over - even with the big jump leads connected across from the 75, it'll only spin over quickly for a few seconds before it slows right down and I have to leave it to charge up for a couple of minutes.  Which makes it a pain in the arse to start if it's been stood for a few weeks and the fuel has run back to the tank, as it takes ages for the little mechanical pump to drag the fuel back up again.  I normally end up taking the air filter off and tipping some pez down the carb.

I took the offside rear wheel off the Elantra to see if I could investigate the ABS fault.  The wiring all looked fine but the sensor was filthy, encrusted in dirt and gunk - I scraped the worst of it off then gave everything a good blasting with brake cleaner.  Put everything back together again, cleared the fault codes and took it for a drive - got about 1/2 mile and then the ABS pump started buzzing again, and a couple of minutes later the ABS and TCS lights came back on.  Plugged the computer back in and now it's decided there's a fault with the offside front sensor.  When I took the car up the road with the computer running a live data feed, all four sensors were working and were giving the same speed readout, so I think the issue is deeper than just a sensor.  I'm not going to bother investigating any further - I have a general dislike of ABS especially in winter, a diesel Hyundai doesn't need traction control, and I'm reconciled to the fact that the car is going to be scrapped when the MOT runs out in the spring, so it's not a massive issue.

The other task at the weekend was to swap the Alfa's wheels round front to rear, as the rears had far better tread.  I didn't actually realise until I took the wheels off how bad the fronts were - they're legal on the outside half, but they're down to the cords on the inside edge.  So the car is now out of action until I can get it booked in to get a pair of part worns fitted.

Also the 75's sat nav has stopped working - it's either saying it doesn't recognise the DVD or it gets stuck on "Please wait a moment".  Not quite sure what's wrong with it, although I suspect the DVD is a non-genuine copy so might have worn out - I'll try buying a new disc off eBay as they're only about a tenner - if I have to replace the DVD unit again that's 50 quid plus for a secondhand one.

Handy tip from the 800 FB group so got the petrol filler flap released (all about the positioning of the key to chisel it open) which means feeding can occur and the car can be pressed back into service.  Lubed up the mechanism and two tugs on the knob in the cabin (missus) gets it back to automated luxury operational status. 820 back in the game, so back to 50% fleet efficiency.

Saab threw up a nice message on the way to work this morning saying COOLANT LEVEL LOW, PLEASE REFILL causing a mild case of brown trousers. Pulled over to check and the level was spot on, then again once parked up. It does have a fault with the coolant temp sensor which may be/I hope is related, it reads cold unless the car's on a decent run . Have ordered one and will attempt to fit at the weekend. Emergency coolant on standby ?

I almost never use the sat nav for its intended purpose.  Google Maps is vastly superior when it comes to finding one's way to places.  However I do get annoyed when things on my cars which used to work stop working.

New front tyres fitted to the 406 today.

I'm sure the old ones didn't look this bulbous, but they're the same 195/65s. At this point I'd normally say it's an improvement, but the steering doesn't feel quite so precise now, plus I had an understeer moment this evening on a roundabout.  It could've just been a slippery bit as it's damp and cold this evening.  Or perhaps wearing new tyres in isn't a load of cock after all, but I've never had to do so in the past.  Will see how it goes at the weekend, as I'm off to Bournemouth on Saturday so that'll be a 300 mile round trip.

Also a rare moment of togetherness, as my stuff is normally dotted all over the place and parked on street.  The gooner parking on the piss was remedied as it was bothering me.

It depends on the tyre how noticeable it is, but breaking them in isn't a myth. They need a little wear and a few heat cycles to get rid of the release agents from the rubber.

It's particularly noticeable on a damp road too.

Give it around a hundred miles and they should hopefully feel a bit different.

Agreed. Had a couple of new Toyo Proxes CF2 put on the 620 last week. Reviews said gr8 handling in the wet. Roads damp. Turned out of the fitters, wheelspin city. Felt a million times worse than the ditch finders they replaced. Did a run down to Derby and back and felt really bouncy. Done 50 or so miles and they are great now. Felt super steady in torrential rain yesterday, rather than comical understeer with the death rings.

Yep. Me too. Traction control saved the day with my wet grip A rated rainsports on the back, giving zero wet grip for the first 30 miles.

Pulled out of the tyre place, in front of moving traffic, applied 200 bhp. Which was retuned to 5 bhp.

to be fair those tyres on the 406 look like an example of the Chinese ditchfinders with the comical names we have a thread on here for, so its to be expected really.

They are far from it. They are Vredestein (Dutch) http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Vredestein/T-Trac-2.htm

They just have a habit of big fucking model names on the sidewalls - I've had/have Snowtrac 3s on my Volvo. Shit to a blanket at this time of year.

The only thing I will say about the T-Trac 2s there is that they are T-rated. I would have gone for H-rated Sportracs.

I did weigh it up, but trying to keep the costs down on this one.  Sounds like they just need a good run then.

I'm on a work outing, left Glasgow yesterday headed for Inverness in the 205 of win. Decided to take the scenic A82 route. The drive through Glencoe never gets old and with the low window line of the 205 you really feel like you're in amongst it.

IMG_20191211_142740654_HDR.thumb.jpg.4a26ee9f61d5d606dcb254166a0d7f1b.jpg

From here I'm heading across to Aberdeen to stay the night, work there tomorrow and down the road on Friday. The 205 isn't bad at distance and was great fun on the twisty sections. The fact you're driving pretty much flat out most of the time makes it all the more fun.
