Bill update:

- Gearbox rebuild including labour: £1850 + VAT

- Replacement of corroded radiator, labour charges for extracting engine and 'box, separation of both, then re-installation later, plus "other bits": £1150 + VAT.

So, er, not much no change out of £3600. More than I paid for the car itself.

*sighs*

Think we can all on here say a collective "how feckin much!"

Liked though for getting it back on the road, at least for a few days until it does another "something very citroen"

Which if you bought another car the same, it'd possibly need that spending on it again to fix the gearbox in it too??

Ventured off-road today because, can. Wasn't exactly extreme off-roading but it was effortless never the less.

To be fair, I knew I was going to be spending at least two grand, but the labour charge was the killer, not the new parts.

I might be looking for a manual CX next time out. The ZF auto wasn't quite as bulletproof as I had thought it was. Almost like a box of chocolates; you never know what fault you're going to get.

Will be taking it to South West Wales in April to float around for a couple of weeks.

My omega wants scrapping.

Not only does it need work to front alignment and brakes to make it brake in a straight line and make a set of tyres last longer than 5 months 8k miles.

Now the 4 disc changer refuses to take the magazine and play any of them. Straw. Camels broken back.

What engine is it? Saloon or Estate?

Does it eat a crank sensor every 3 to 6 months?

Is it engine donor money?

Just got worst ever fuel consumption in the merc. Short trips and an mot ( they leave it idling for ages ) saw me just put 61.1 litres in at 305 miles done.

So that’s 13.44gallons and 22.7mpg!

I thought he'd died already, but still very sad. 80yrs is pretty young nowadays.

I was at the Haynes Motor Museum in November (birthday treat) and apparently he used to come in every day during the week at the same time to have his lunch in the cafe. Even had his own dedicated seat at the window.

RIP

Is the rest of the car in perfect mechanical condition with no rust, good paint and an immaculate interior? If so, then enjoy the car and average the cost out over the next ten years of trouble free motoring.

If not then it’s one of many huge bills to come I expect.

To make you feel even worse, I got 20mpg commuting in this today (edit: ok, 18.4). It’s my new M4 weapon of choice.

250 miles done in total calm and comfort. If you press the pedal down it just - keeps - accelerating - forever. Best £2k car ever.

That's exactly what those beauties were built for.

Back in 2012, I rushed down the A303 to see my Grandfather one night because he was terminally ill in Exeter hospital.  He passed away the next morning.  That same day, I decided that I should go back home.  Not knowing what to do with myself, I stopped at the Haynes Motor Museum.  The first person I spoke to was a very kind receptionist who was patient enough to listen to me in my early stage of grief.  I spent a good couple of hours there.

I've been back since but that place is quite special to me for that reason.

Pretty much. Wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Wouldn't have bought it if it had a sunroof or metric wheels.

Thought it was worth sharing. Had me laughing my head off.

I've got loads of Goon shows as MP3s somewhere. I used to listen to them in the car until I was laughing so much one day I nearly drove off a straight motorway.

If it makes you feel any better my A610 went in for a clutch last year. The final bill afterwards was £7000. To be fair it needed a bit more doing to it than the £3k I had budgeted for.

I have not used the car since I put it in the garage on it's return in August last year....

I wish I had the ballz to run an XJS. Drove many back in the day and still have the 'want'. I doff my cap to you, sir!

Is yours the V12? If so, that consumption is fantastic! How long have you had it cos 2 grand is cheap for one that looks tidy?

I don't know whether to be relieved or slightly stung that the car passed the MoT before the gearbox failed.

Just watched dollywobblers video where he receives a box of random junk.

I hope to fuck he does'nt get me in this year's secret santa.

I’ve worked it out properly now and it’s actually 18.4mpg.

It is a V12, a fairly early (1982) HE. I bought it just over 3 years ago; its own thread is here: http://autoshite.com/topic/21777-skizzers-xj-s/

It had been off the road for a long time so I’ve had to spend a bit on it, to be fair, mainly on freeing off and sorting the brakes, a gearbox actuator, some steering bits and refurbishing the injectors. A more competent DIYer with a lift (and more time) could have done all that themselves though. I did the ignition and headlining myself.

Cosmetics-wise and bodywork-wise — er, it’s had a wash with some Autoglym shampoo. Twice, actually, which for me is quite a lot in three years.

I'm trying to work out if this is a "you pay the shipping" opportunity to fill DW's garage with junk.

I have lots of garage junk he can have. Some of it may even look useful!

That was a great watch! I have several 'lucky bags' in the garage together with random boxes of spares in my lofts for cars I no longer own/ am unlikely to have another.
