Finally got my arse into gear and bought something for my VW based Manataray beach buggy, namely these rear lights, which i'm sure are from a bus of some description.....

Dennis Dominator?

Why put it through insurance?  It's not broken, it's just worn out.  That'd be like putting a claim in for worn out balljoints or tyres.

I'm in the same boat myself. Rover's windscreen is scratched to buggery. I might ask the insurance company anyway. Pretty sure the BX windscreen was replaced because I asked them to rather than a serious crack or something.

Went down to Somerset today to try and convince the wife that it'd be a nice area to live. A bit far from her friends but we both drive. The positive of living down there is for the same money as Bristol we'd get a bigger house (and double garage) and more land.

When we thought about leaving Kent about 10 years ago (yeah, like I was going to leave this beautiful* place) Somerset was highest on the list - Wells being favourite, but also Glasto, Bruton and Frome.

Well if you get a stone chip it’s £70 to replace it if it’s beyond repair on all my policies. And doesn’t affect claims renewal either.

I've been meaning to get my paperwork out to check the glass excess and get the phone number for weeks. Forgot again tonight!

Welcome!  It did stop raining about 5PM here so you might be OK now, roads are very greasy though, hopefully this will wash them down.  I think we've had all the rain we missed between June and August in about 2 days but it has been needed.

Thank you!  I get down to Exmouth quite a lot.  Parents live down here and my Gran has lived here since at least the 80s...

Blackdown Hills was interesting but nowhere near as bad as I thought it might be.  Think the Golf might need some new front tyres though.  Hmm.

Which is why this year the Saab has fully comp, I've just got to remember to call them about the chips. Next year I'll probably go back to TPF&T as that seems to give me driving other cars cover that I lost by picking FC for the windscreen (both policies were the same price).

Land rovers

Ten years or so back I really fancied a series. Preferably a series 3 but a 2a or 90 or 110 or defender would do too.....

I bought all the mags, I trawled the forums. I became a massive geek and my long suffering wife was fed up listening to me harp on about the shit heaps (her words!)

Life happened, kids appeared l, money was tight and I walked away from landie land

Back then a tatty but serviceable series 3 88inch could be picked up for say £1500.

So imagine my horror when after reading Ben Fogles land rover book* I ventured on to ebay to see what £1500 buys now.....

Think I've missed the boat :(

*On the whole I'd recommend reading it. He shows a fair lack of knowledge of his subject area but IMO gets the emotion side of it bang on and interviews the right people. It's a bit self indulgent in places, he repeats himself a fair bit through the book and the land rover geek in you will have to bite one's lip when he gets bits wrong, but he admits as much himself so I guess he can be forgiven.

driving other cars is not normally part of TPF&T you most likely lost it as you never mentioned it- i had that conversation once so its a box i always check for now!

Fuck! Came very close to crashing the BMW today. Came off a roundabout today by Halesowen (coming from Hagley heading towards Birmingham on the Hagley road carriageway) and as I did I must have caught some oil or diesel as when I entered into the Hagley Road carriageway the back of the BMW stepped out slightly and spun me around. We headed into some shrubbery and eventually came to a stop. I hadn't hit anything thankfully, I checked the car over and there was no damage to my car at all.

Phew.

Anyway, after nearly binning the BMW I got to Ma_Sterlings. Was told last week that the mirror on the roffle Micra had been damaged by someone/something and now it wouldn't start.

When I arrived there, I got the mirror back on, amazingly the actual mirror was still in tact apart from a tiny chip at the bottom presumably from where it has hit the ground. Then I diagnosis that the Micra non-starting was down to the battery. So some jump starting was needed:

The Micra got started and I took it around the block. It still feels as nice and refined as a K11 Micra can be.

I took it down to fetch some Pizzas too. Keeping an eye on it as the battery or alternator may be at fault.

BMW front tyre has developed a slow puncture so that's another thing on the list that will need doing.

Also, I appear to have stretched something in my lower back. I was sorting out the Original_Ma_Micra when I was taking the bonnet out I felt my lower back stretch a bit and it's been hurting since then. Mind, the Blue Micra, despite having been stood for a month started up straight away without so much of a cough. It drove just as it always has done. What a great little car. Beats the shit out of my other cars.

It was. I had the choice this year, FC with windscreen or TPF&T with DOC. Like I said they were the same price from the same company but I wanted windscreen to sort the chips.

[oh dear intensifies]

Just buy it & claim it's a 'full sized spare'.

Ha, that's a cracker.

I'm seriously thinking about trying to get my dad into the white one, he seems to like working on it.

I've had the feeling of dragging brakes in the Cavalier recently, so today I checked the fronts. Driver's was OK but the NS very much wasn't. The caliper came off OK with a bit of force, so I cleaned stuff up and exercised the piston. Now seems to be better but I'll keep an eye on it. An upturned bucket is ideal for resting a caliper on.

It then started to piss down, so after a few hours of putting the job off I started on the Rover's alternator. Fortunately it's narrow enough to fit in the garage with room to work, as it was still pelting down.

I was anticipating a ballache of a job, but I took my time and despite a very hard to tap out lower bolt I was done in 2 hours.

Photo of relief. The parts are identical. It's a NOS Hella for £38 delivered which I thought was good value, seeing as a voltage regulator alone was 24 quid. With the ignition on the battery warning light is now glowing bright red, rather than dim/not at all as before.

So I've managed TWO proper fixes today. I'm going to bask in that for a while as it doesn't happen often.

Morning all,

Another MOT for the Sierra-needed a brake pipe changing-so not bad at all. Will give it an oil and filter change along with fuel filter-don't think that has ever been changed.

Because of rust the bracket for the rear fog light on our mx5 had snapped. For two years it was held in position by tie wraps.

I found an old Halfords reversing light in the garage. circa 1970s.

Took it around to MikeR who gave me an orange bulb and painted the glass with children's water based red paint.

There was nowhere for the earth lead as it was designed to be earthed through the bra get. and the mx5 fog light bolts to a plastic bumper. So i found a way to attach the earth lead.

Took me ages. post-17612-0-82446700-1535380132_thumb.jpgpost-17612-0-09360000-1535380182_thumb.jpgpost-17612-0-16692100-1535380720_thumb.jpg

"bra get".  That'll be a west country fix then.

Would it not have been easier to stick a red bulb in the offside reverse light and change the wiring ? I did that on mine and have had no mot problems (other than the annual cat/decat debate)

Went to look at the Trabant, rotten sill, steering rack garters spilt, gearbox leaking, engine mount gone, low clutch, rotten rear valance, lumpy idle and black smoke.didn't buy.

So it was definitely a Trabant, then?

Took no convincing at all.

Doesn’t look red enough to me - top bodging otherwise

The mot is due soon so it may be that a red bulb is required. Or not.
