Girlfriend wants us to pop over to Poland for a bit of a holiday. I suggested buying a car and driving it back.

Apparently I'm not allowed to bring anything back that won't fit in hand luggage so no Trabant/Simca/Skodas for me. :(

Bring back the v5/equivalent in your luggage, while the car is being shipped over.

Here's my new whip. 300k km on the clock but it's on its second engine. A lot of work done on it and currently holds clean MOT certificate.

There's a bag of spares and original headlights that I will probably swap as soon as possible. No headlight wipers or sprinklers though because it's an import from Italy. Unfortunately no original tail lamps or wheels to be seen. WCPGW

FIT. Will you be bringing it back to the UK?

Maybe. To be honest, my planning atm does not go further than a week or two ahead.

And Ryanair tickets are rather cheap...

Camberley Motor Show

YESTERDAY/08/18

I popped along to this briefly yesterday. It was in the town centre and the crowds were chaotic and sticky. I got a few photos.

The highlight for me was easily this Gilbern prototype. With this being Autoshite I'm sure Wuvvum has got one in a lock up he's forgotten about or summat, but I've never seen owt quite like it.

I had a nice chat with the owner who told me it used to have 1500 Maxi power but now has a Toyota numbers and letters engine from a Corolla T-spirit.

There was some other decent stuff, and a fair variety. A bit too much of the polished tyres for me though.

I recall Junkman saying he knew the owner of this.

today has been a most excellent day.

We've been to Thwaites Mill in Leeds, which inspite of been in Leeds is actually a really lovely place to visit.

we were supposed to take Cocopop and Rodney the black mini, but thats still slightly broken, and this morning was wet, dull and not too promising. we could have taken Marvin, but in the end we didn't . the black mini? well the new radiator is in, but the back wheel bearings that melted all their grease are still to change. so, it is still sat in the garage. i hope its thinking about its attitude.....

so today, up early, (i mean who knew there was TWO 7 o'clocks in a Sunday?) and off to collect the mini, and put marvin into the lockup, then off to Leeds

i think the black mini was originally this colour, its the only BL/Austin Morris car i've seen with a Grenerdine Red interior. see having spoken to the previous-previous owner of the car, he said he re-shelled the black mini into its current body in 1982-83, having bought the body for £50 direct from BL. This matches with a similar tale (though inviolving a Morris Marina pick-up body) someone else told us recently. it seems that in th early 1980's there was a number of unused, surplus bodyshells which BL were selling off. And hence why the body on the black mini been in such spotless, mint condition with factory sills and facory wings!

I pay my £1500 council tax to Surrey heath, part of camberley. But do they tell me there’s a car show five miles from my house ? No.

I went out on the bike this morning and had a complete lethargic attack on the return home and couldn’t be bothered to go out in the car. So I decided to try and fix the bad lacquer.

I have some farecla repair stuff now which worked well in getting rid of the holes and cracks but then I saw grey primer. Oh hell, I’ve polished too much! No, there was original blue paint underneath, so I polished down to that. Looks like a previous paint job ( this is round the radio aerial ) has now deteriorated causing the lacquer peel.

Unfortunately whilst all the bad cracks have gone I can’t polish too much further to the aerial for fear of what I’ll find and what’s now left has a grey primer line across the wing- I’ve tried masking it off and polishing to the tape which helped a little.

The wing needs repair at the wheelarch anyway for rust and I suppose the paint mark is less unsightly than thousands of peeling cracks in the lacquer. I see a trip to the paint shop coming up!

That looks an excellent show, a great variety there. Thanks for sharing.

I need to buy some brake bits. ECP are plugging a 37% discount code til midnight tonight.... but with the bank holiday next weekend will they do a bigger discount? What do we think, stick on 37% today, or twist and hope for a bumper code next weekend?

Twist. They never go more than a couple of days without at least a 30% discount and brakes are often 50%. Even if there isn't a discount on they'll send you a code if you put stuff in your basket and don't complete.

Shells were always available reasonably cheaply. Virtually every Marina going into the local salvage place used to be rebuilt into a brand new pickup shell and reregistered onto a brand new plate. They used to get loads of shells delivered at the same time.

Any shiters go to Dalemain today? Got the chance to drive a friends lovely Bluebird from his place to the show and back. I parked it up outside his house bang on 36k miles. It drives exactly as well as it should. I am now about 8th in line to buy it.

One of the slew rams on the hymac was doing a good impression of a water sprinkler.

The collar end of the ram is held on with 4 Allen bolts, requiring a 9/16 bit.

Fortunately, I buy old tools by the box load and found a hexagonal bar the right size. Lots of heat and swearing and leaning on my longest breaker bar got them to crack off, eventually.

I thought that was the hard bit done, but this clevis pin refused to budge.

It started to bend so I cut off its head and drifted through from the other side.

Now I could pull the ram out with the aid of a ratchet strap.

there were a couple of comments from a few people there that they had no idea until that moring that either the bus thing or the car show were even happeingin today. in fact some only found out about it because they had seen one of the old busses running around town, they were running trips from Thwaites Mill up into the city and back, and there was no sort of publicity for it before hand.

which is pretty daft, given that we had signed up for it through "the pre-war austin owners club" (or something similar) website earlier in the year!

in other, black mini related news i bought this last week at Santa Pod, it was Mini in the Park show, and like at BL-day previously the numbers of cars on show, people there and autojumbler-trader types seemed well down on other years that we have been.

given it a wipe over with a damp cloth and its come up like new, no marks and the white stiching is also like new. it is i belive an Astratli steering wheel, and is i think only the vinyl one, not leather.

BUT, having had a good look at it, i'm now thinking that its for a mark 4 mini (with the stalks for the indicators on the left, and wipers on the right) and NOT the mark 3 which it was bought for.........

shit. arse, drat......

if that is the case, and it don't fit then it'll get hung off a wall in the shed! i think the mice will like looking at it.

Today was the large car show at Stonham Barns here in Suffolk, over 1000 cars on display and i was very kindly asked to judge the best 1976-1999 car, what a challenge! When you have all them cars just picking one which I thought was worthy of a prize was really hard! In the end I picked this little MK1 Fiesta 1.1L, humble I know but it was in such nice clean and original condition and totally different to the kind of car you would expected to be picked, there was a beautiful MK2 RS2000 in Signal yellow which had recently been fully restored by its owner which i very very nearly picked, but the fact it was a sporting Ford put me off.

I'm still not sure I made the right decision!

I also took my Marina to it first ever show where it got tonnes of praise and I had my East Coast Retros club stand where I managed to get 53 cars on it, so a pretty successful day!

I love the styling on Scoupes, they're from a very specific time when coupés like it were in vogue, neither curvy nor square, it's vague and confusing, but pretty damn cool.

The Isuzu Piazza mk2/Asüna Sunfire is another one.

Definitely made the right decision there Trig, nice to see an original condition base model get some recognition, considering the RS2000 was probably surrounded by OSF meatheads swooning over it all day while the fiesta was mostly ignored. Its even got Sercks!

This morning at KwikFit, there was a meeting of ancient and modern:

post-23014-0-70992100-1534765246_thumb.jpg

It was agreed that the CX was booked in, so the examiner (an Aussie who has known me for years) started the test early...

post-23014-0-27657000-1534765482_thumb.jpg

The emissions were acceptable:

post-23014-0-69447300-1534765647_thumb.jpg

... so the rest of the CX was tested, and various jokes made about the effectiveness* of Citroën handbrakes:

post-23014-0-80022300-1534765869_thumb.jpg

There were some awkward moments when he couldn't remember where the switches for the indicators, hazards, or headlights were because Citroën design. Come to think of it, he couldn't remember the last time he had a CX in for testing.

Still, it was alright in the end:

New rear brake pads will be needed and there is a slight blow in the exhaust joint between front and centre sections.

Over winter it seems I may be in the position to buy an actual classic.

If anyone knows of a Dolomite 1850 or a Farina Oxbridge going, I may well be interested.

edit: or a Landcrab?

I know this is a bit like that lottery advert where they say worse problems to have but i *need to sell a car but I'm struggling! I've just spent a hour doing a advert on eBay for my Ital van but i just can't press submit, basically i have more cars than space at the moment and too much of my savings invested in them, my house is on the market and my Focus isn't too well and ideally needs replacing with a diesel so i need some cash and something need to go but i can't decide!. I'm hoping writing it here will help me make my mind up...

So firstly, and most logically would be the Ital van, it's a van so the family can't go in it and i haven't got much use for a van either but being a van it's also handy at times, like that boot sale i had on Saturday, The £130 a year insurance isn't ideal but it is lower road tax plus i have a long history with the van knowing it since 1994 and to be honest i enjoy driving it, yes it's a bit uncomfortable and noisy but it's fun to drive and I've done a lot of work on it, i can't sell it now it's all sorted, can i?.

Next up is the Rover, it costs a fortune to run in fuel, the road tax is a lot and it's £150 a year to insure too, It only just fits in my garage too but again it's bloody lovely to drive, sound great with the stainless exhaust, looks gorgeous from the front and i can get all the family and prams in the car and it's just a practical retro/classic. Both the Van and car are realistically worth around £3500 each I'd imagine?.

Lastly I've got the Marina Estate, it doesn't really drive all that nice, especially compared to the Rover (as expected) but I can't sell this yet, £78 to insure, tax and mot exempt and i'll never find another classic in this condition again plus I'm displaying it at the NEC in November so that's a no go at the moment.

So it's between the van and the Rover, shit, I'm even more confused what to do now than before!

Marina and Ital are nice companions, and being unable to press submit on the latters advert proves you don't want to sell it.

But the SD1 is a good one...

This is why I don't often buy decent stuff as it's a lot easier to shift dross.

Sounds like you should ditch the modern and run the three BL musketeers as a daily rotation.

Hey Man.

The SD1 just fitting in your garage isn’t an issue, as you’ll be on the move soon enough.

I understand any amount of cash is a lot when you don’t have it, but £150 PA is - in the scheme of motoring - negligible. It’s not even £3 a week.

I’d not make decisions based on space or money - but more on feels.

If it were me, the van would stay as it’s a cracker and a van is ALWAYS of use. I’d lose a car, and really it would be down to what I’d likely use most. For me, the Marina would

be on its way - but for you it might be different.

Best of British with the house move and with the cars!

Had I the moneys, I would be all over that Rover like a rash. I think they look wonderful. My first car was an SD1 V8 VP auto, the signficant difference being that car cost me £60. (it was also utterly fubar, but there you go)

I have not yet won the lottery, and its not for the lack in trying. For that reason only please keep hold of the van just now :)
