Spent a little time on my neighbour's Nova SR today.

 

It has been laid up for a few years but had been regularly run to keep things moving. Sadly just after we moved in, Janet lost her husband and so the Nova hasn't had a lot of attention at all.

 

When it last ran, it was allowed to run out of fuel, and hadn't idled since.

 

Initially, I topped up the fuel, pulled the king lead and attached a fresh battery.

 

I span it over on the starter and eventually achieved oil pressure.

 

I refitted the king lead and attempted to start the engine, it turned over well enough but no attempt to fire. A dash of fuel down the carb had it fire but die quickly.

 

I removed and cleaned all the plugs which were very sooted up, the next attempt at getting it running was success, but it still refused to idle.

This SR has Pierburg carb fitted and I was lucky enough to find an exploded diagram online and so got to pulling the idle jet out.

 

Next to the jet is some .8 mig wire I brought with clogged jets in mind. It also represents the only time I have used my mig welder since I bought it. :-(

With a quick broggling and a blast from the maintenance spray, the jet was soon clear and the next attempt had the engine running beautifully.

The plan is to present the car for an not and then put it up for sale.

 

Janet and her husband have owned the car from new and she wants it to go to someone who will restore and enjoy it.

 

There is some work to be done, but it is a very original car.

Good shout tbh. However I am shit with electrics so I couldn't tell you what's good/bad..I will have to book it in and let them do it so they can definitively answer the question. Just fucks me off, as the car is great and I was in the process of shifting it for Holbeck's Saab...FFS

Replace the fuse for it in the first instance. Easiest thing and they can crack or develop micro fractures if you're unlucky.

Probably will get a loving owner. Nova have moved from boy racer to banger and now classic. Unmolested ones are fetching decent money as people my generation (30-40) want to relive their youth.

Well bum.

Find the part you need before you break it, kids.  I now need about a dozen plastic plug/clips that go into 1cm square holes and accept a threaded screw all the way through the middle.  I'm sure I'll find something, naturally the original part is NLA.

Mmmmmm not sure the Panhard is going to be worth going after. There is a rather large hole needs welding up.

Sat in Austria with my bike broken in Italy. It's not good but fuck me Italy is full of lazy wankers, it's good to be in a civilised place.

My bike should arrive tomorrow to get fixed too. After a tyre delamination on Tuesday the damn charging system failed with burnt out wires yesterday.

It's not really going well this trip....

Mmmmmm not sure the Panhard is going to be worth going after. There is a rather large hole needs welding up.

 

Unless they've thrown away the bulkhead/arch bit that's been taken off, I don't see it being a huge issue.

 

If it's gone, though, good luck finding a replacement. You're very welcome to come measure mine, but they're made of multiple smaller bits so fabricating one from scratch won't be for the faint hearted.

A friends Varadero did the clutch in in Italy after doing the Stella Alpina or something like that, recovery put him up in a hotel then flew him back after it became obvious it was going to be quicker to recover the bike back than get it fixed in Italy....

To no.1 son to the bangers and production rods at Smallfield today, haven't been to the oval for years and cars just don't bend like they used to, if I was going to go head on with a yank a London taxi wouldn't previously have been my weapon of choice but those things are hard!!!

My son noticed the age of the drivers in the junior productions too (10-15) and guess what he wants to have a go at when we have space for a car/ trailer/ workshop...sigh why isn't this any sort of surprise :) anybody know what a built car is likely to set me back just out of interest.....

Serviced the sibling's i10 yesterday...seeing as last time it was done in November and the whole process was utterly hideous, I didn't want to repeat that.  Bring it over during the summer, I said.  It'll be warm and dry, I said.  Well, it was warm but it rained pretty much the whole day.  Thankfully there was enough of the front of the car under my garage door to prevent too much water ingress.  The whole process should have been a quick oil change and checkover, typically though it ended up being about 3 hours of hassle starting with discovering like a pillock that I'd ordered the wrong oil. 10W40 seems to satisfy most cars but not the i10 which prefers a diet of 5W30.  Fortunately ECP swapped it for free.

 

I then spent about an hour cursing, muttering and shouting COME ON whilst trying to remove the teeny little oil filter which I only fitted 8 months and 9,000 miles ago.  I only ever tighten them by hand and always wipe oil on the seal but last year I must have been feeling particularly strong as nothing I did would persuade it to move and I only succeeded in scraping off a considerable amount of skin on the various rusty bolts on the exhaust manifold which is inches from the filter.  Eventually I relented and did something I probably should have done years ago, heading down to my local Halfords and purchasing an oil filter removal tool.  Another 10 minutes of making assorted strange noises and calling it mildly offensive names eventually resulted in victory.  New one fitted, 3.5 litres of oil added, a quick test drive and all is well for another year.  Oh, and of course, it got a new air filter; the old one was surprisingly manky.  That's city living I guess.

 

To cap off the weekend, just got a text from her saying that after driving it 200ish miles back home, she's noticed one of the brakes has started making loud scraping noises.  Ungrateful thing, hopefully just a bent heat shield but her local garage can deal with that.

None of this disposable stuff either. I have a set of oil proof ones I got from Screwfix especially for oil changes.

 

Even using disposable is better than bare hands. Except the eurocarpart ones, they're crap. End up double bagging them as they rip easily. Often even when putting them on.

Is that the same rover? Lights, bumper and plate in different places

They're all easy to change. The air vent flaps on the bulkhead are the bolt on type you only get on '58 to '61 series 2, so it will be the same LR.

 

Well done finding it. S2s are getting pricey now too.

Can't help with the cost, but they have a F/B page with a few different classes for sale.

Would guess £750 to £1,500 but don't even know what cars they use so could be miles out.

If they are not intentionally bumping running cost will be low.

My son started in Mini Stox age 11. Always used to worry me that I started him too soon.

His daughter has just begun Go Kart lessons age 5.

Some take to it, some don't. As long as you don't push them it's no worse than some other sports.

Exactly this, plus there's loads of bits of stainless work present that my old man did when he owned it.

 

Not to mention the hundreds of stainless fixings he used to nick from his job at the time!
