Mazda 626. A few repairs, Fresh MOT and Giffer URBEX.

  • Headlight repair: Wire rotted through at a connector. Few skotchlocks and job was a goodun.

  • Developed a miss fire at idle and would run normally as revs increased. Pulled plug leads when engine was running and could hear pop, pop, pop on all plugs but engine was not affected when number 4 was pulled. Single carb, therefore, highly likely fuel going to all pots. Dad and I spent ages bodging up a makeshift HT lead to see if number 4 lead was duff. Cleaned distributor cap but no change. Both perplexed as to why it was lumpy on tick over only. If the culprit was a dodgy plug, lead or cap I would expect missfire throughout the rev range. We decided to check the compression. I was really shitting it hoping the devil didn't have significant engine wear. Compression was 125 rising to 140+, all good there. After a significant amount of time we realised I unplugged a vac pipe accidentally with all my excessive rooting under the bonnet. Pipe attached and the engine ran like a watch, although I felt slightly embarrassed.

  • Drivers Door Handle Fix. Dad managed to rivet broken door card bracket and fit door handle whilst I nipped to the loo to lay some cable.

  • Mazda Got a fresh MOT! Good condition underneath, tester found 1 uk spec headlight and 1 continental.

  • Jobs to do: rear break shoes and near side wheel cylinder, replace exhaust downpipes, make a polycarbonate window panel that is fully functional and find a continental to uk headlight conversion kit.

Little victories. My 405 now has Peugeot wheel trims all round - pound shop ones frisbie'd into the bin.

Courtesy of ebay, there is also on the way a new nearside mirror and front indicator to replace the rather beaten up / held on with masking tape ones on the car.

Next on the list is investigating the lack of front electric window operation. It's not the fuse, so I'll have to go looking for the relay.

Blimey.  Bit strong there mate!

Pleased for your Mazda.  That's some proper shite there with an MOT.  Long may it live!

Cheers bud. I always thought those 406's were great. I remember reading some motoring mag way back when and he said the ride quality put many more expensive cars to shame. Thought the chap was spot on with is his assessment.

Lol. I have a soft spot for them. In my eyes as a child I thought they were fantastic. A couple relatives and mates parents had them and I wanted one so badly that I swore when I turned 17 and got my license I would have one. If not one of them I would have a Reliant Scimitar. I was blissfully ignorant thinking it was possible for a 17 year old to insure one of those in the 1990's.

Bought this tonight for the wife, pick it up tomorrow

fc32d9cea2b35eb721b4265373a86dec.jpg

It was very cheap, it is one of those new fangled 1.4tdi units (so it'll probably explode on the way home) and it'll do millions of MPG.

It's not the quickest thing in the world but she drives everywhere at walking speed anyway.

The mileage she is currently doing means a car of any actual value would be worthless after a week. She's embraced her inner autoshiter with this one.

Bonus points in my eyes are the pope mobile styling and the totally buttery biscuit base spec level, you have to use an actual key in an actual lock to open and close it, no fancy remote central locking here. Hell it doesn't even have a lid for the glove box.

If she doesn't get on with it there's every chance I could be tempted to take it on as a daily.....

Those are fucking hideous and I mean that in the nicest way possible.

I really like them, much better value and more practical than the equivalent VW shitbox too. Well bought!

Reminds me of my old Berlingo just more rounded. I can't make up my mind if it's as ugly or more ugly than the Bingo. Are the sliding rear doors. Those are ace.

It's gopping, and firmly in fiat multipla territory here.

They are a very honest car, much like the fabia of the same era. No bells or whistles at all but what is there feels nice and solid.

No sliding doors unfortunately. Tons of room in the back, three individual rear seats which remove completely. It's proper vast with the seats out, potential for stealth camper there......

Hello all.

I came across this on Flickr this evening:

41931553390_537d0bd532_b.jpg1987 Fiat Strada (Ritmo) 60 CL Mk 3 by Neil Potter, on Flickr

It's earmarked for scrap as it's been dumped, and supposedly could be acquired for free from it's current location. Unsure of the legalities of this...but just look at it.

For those who are interested, it's in Bromley. Time is of the essence apparently. I would, but my luck with MOT-less cars and the fact I have zero off road parking does that in.

Doesn't even exist on Cazana, but yes the DVLA still think it has a V5.

So James called round tonight.

Bit of an issue with his awesome bulletproof Punto.

It’s grand though, as we’re experienced mechanics.

The TT keeps pinging up bulb out warnings and annoying Mrs SiC. Everytime you go check them, the lights are all on.

One thing I will give VAG is their ease of removal for common replaceable parts. The rear light cluster came out with one plastic nut thing with a supplied tool in the boot.

What I will not give VAG is their shit design.

Looking at the traces it appears that is the earth line. I gave them all a good clean by scratching the terminals with a flat headed screwdriver.

Bulbs themselves look well worn.

Interestingly there is no dedicated brake bulbs or side light bulbs. The side light function is provided by dimming the 21w brake light bulbs. Brake lighting is provided by giving the bulbs full power.

We'll see how this goes. No doubt when the terminal resistance gets too high, it'll melt both the cluster and wiring harness connector. Thus requiring a new cluster and wiring harness connector to make the job even more a PIA.

After a worryingly long period the v5 came back for the Cortina and it's now a historic vehicle. I've just taxed at £0 for the year and I also guess it's now MOT exempt, which is good as I've just poked another hole in it.

Great news! And it also means you won’t have to bother fixing stuff like rust holes anymore now.

Did I read right on here recently that the glorious old Mazda 929 that was found in a scrapyard had been saved by someone here?

And further to this, if this is indeed the case, who saved it and is there any updates on what’s going on with it?

I’m sure I read it but can’t find where. Unless I’m seeing things again!

Another friggin TT common fault!

I like his bodge work though. Especially with the Lucas style bullet connectors.

Peugeot 407s do this. Melt the earth in the plug.

New earth cable crimped to the harness + run directly into the cluster body (bypassing the connector - drill a hole in the earth busbar and connect the cable with a loop crimp and bolt) resulted in all of the bulb warnings gone.

207's also do the same, I had to do the above fix on the wife's car.

I believe the saviour is staying quiet until it has actually been rescued from the yard. Plans are in place.

I recall doing something similar to a mk3 escrote.

The person that bought that 407 probably thought it was a right nail when they found mains flex running into the rear light clusters
