I took the opportunity of drafting in a modern to replace the 172 whilst it awaits repair...

Additionally, whilst out to dine, I clocked this Grampa pointing at the Oxford and chatting his grandson through all the things that differed from the modern motorcar.

To whit, I popped out and let the young 'un sit in the driver's seat, start it, play with the indicators and horn and generally go "COOOOL" whilst I nattered to the old boy.

Hopefully he grows up to be a winnah that loses months of his life welding up old scrap!

Because I am a monumental idiot I drove a few miles with my phone and wallet sat on top of my trailer's load cover.

When the penny dropped I pulled over and only my phone remained on the trailer.

I've cancelled my cards, and will have to brave the DVLA phone lines tomorrow to get a new license posted out. Wish me luck....

Been up and down the route I took but no luck. Only hope is the local chemist which has a big speed bump outside, hoping wallet has bounced off here and been handed in....

Phew...

Today, I agreed with an old lady who is a neighbour that I'd shove her Fiesta out from its 5-year slumber spot and down the driveway which would act as a deterrent from people using her driveway to turn around in.

post-3572-0-36514500-1530910798_thumb.jpg

As the Fiesta had been sitting there for around 5 years (she gave up driving after a stroke) I thought I had my work cut out. So after a couple of aborted attempts (family etc...) I went down to have a look and see how 'stuck' the Fiesta was.

Amazingly, it wasn't stuck at all. The handbrake was off and with bit of minor rocking the Fiesta was moving out of its spot where it had been in slumber.

I wasn't expecting to move it then. The old lady had offered me the space if I needed it as changes to free parking might be coming. The council are trying to rent the spaces out at £800+ per year.

Soon, the Fiesta, complete with cobwebs and the like was on the move.

I was manoeuvring the Fiesta in a parallel-parking way, the drivers-side window was almost stuck but I managed with a bit of persuasion to free it so I could steer the car. I got it into position and got it parked in front of the van. The old lady was very happy and so was I as I have somewhere to put my car.

The Fiesta is solid, I reckon a some minor recomissioning work would easily see it back on the road.

Must be catching - I did that last Friday with my cat's drugs after a vet visit.and successfully reclaimed them from the car park some 30 minutes later after they'd bounced off the car roof .

Wasn't until Sunday that I realised my debit card was also included in the ejected goods. Went back. Gone, just my receipt blowing in the breeze.

Got the replacement card today - thank fuck for my zero balance credit card which was mercilessly hammered this week (and now all paid off).

Got a phone call from local plod station. It was found on the motorway by a maintenance crew minus the cash and debit card......

Just happy I don't have to deal with doovla now for a replacement license!

Boy is complaining that the brakes are squealing on his clio. Time to break out the spanners and get sunburnt.

I’ve just bought a new toy from lidl as I don’t have an outside tap for a hosepipe.

Neither do I, would be interested to hear if this is any use.

The journey home will be more comfortable though, and hopefully more aid conditioned. Forgot to check that bit.

Grrr. The clutch slave cylinder has just gone on the fiat. At least that’s what I think - no back pressure on the pedal, and lots of fluid around the slave and none in the reservoir. It’s at home but all the neighbours are out so I can’t get an assistant to help me check what happens when I press the pedal.

I will get some dot3 first and top it up, but still need a second person to help bleed it.

Ho hum.

Edit. Just ordered one (plus extra bits like flexi hose, washers and nuts) for £21.52.

Stupid question time. The cap says dot 3 only. I need to buy some but Halfords have dot4 is it ok to use either?

Ditto - can we have a full review with diagrams and preferably video excerpts of herds of children being knocked down by the sheer force of water.

I'm poised to raid my Lidl as soon as it gets the thumbs up from Richard.

It’s charged now and I’ll give it a try tomorrow.

Edit. Couldn’t wait!

It’s not quiet, and it’s what you’d get out of a hosepipe not a karcher but cleaned the bikes easily with very little water. Tried it on the car windows too, but they really need washing first. I think you’d get bored trying to wash a car with it. Probably ok for wheels and cleaning isolated bird muck.

Thumbs up.

And so it came to pass....

Under close* supervision the front brakes were stripped down. Inspected, cleaned, lubricated and put back together to absolutely no avail. Still squealing like an international footballer appealing to the ref for a penalty.

Despite having a fair bit of meat left on the pads we tried replacing them with new ones. These were better quality than the old ones and came with anti squeal shims on the backing plates.

Being new they're not totally silent but there's no trace of the squeal.

Oh well, I'd only have been lazing around enjoying my day off.

As an aside, I bought a second hand big fuck-off breaker bar (snap on, I'm living the dream) from Seaham car boot sale last sunday. Today was it's first outing. I'm smitten! How i coped without this before I dont know. It laughs in the face of stuck lug nuts.

Driving to just north of Cambridge later to collect something. Hopefully no traffic on the roads as everyone else will be glued to the telly watching an important* football match.

Aye, dot4 mixes fine with dot3

Actually the book says it should do 35mpg on a run, which is perfectly acceptable. Good luck getting that in an equivalent Jag.

Money shot.

As expected the V8ness is rather muted, but suits the stealth nature of the thing. A few foibles, the main one being lack of aircon. It had a regas but the lad said it needs resetting or something. Hopefully google will yield a cheap fix as I'm boiling. 70mph with the windows down it is.

2 hours to go till home and the roads should get quieter once that game starts.

Faded Elegance. How naff is this!

I saw that Merc on FB and wished I had justification for another 5 seat saloon family car. 4 is apparently ‘enough’

Enjoy!

Top work RobT! That looks lovely, minus the non-functioning air con.

I just don't have air con at all. I'm in Scotland though, no biggie!

BI:  But the Sierra is a hatchback.  By my reckoning that means you're allowed one more saloon.

Rob, that Merc used to belong to Prab of this parish. Drop him a PM, I'm sure he can fill in some of its history :)

Glad you’ve managed to find a v8 Merc Rob those 430’s seem to have plenty of puff.

It won't. The 300 turbodiesel will do 35 on a run. The pez models will barely see 30 even if cruising at 50/55mph

I'd expect 20 when pottering and high 20's on a run. It's a big 'ol weighty car, with an autobox with no lockup. And it's fast. Deceptively fast. Have you doen a kickdown at just under 40mph?

Well bought though! The 430 keeps on going forever. Have you checked the front spring perches for corrosion?
