Was going to mr mussle my turbo at the weekend stripped a few pipes down and realised I was well out my depth! Couldn’t unbolt the egr pipe!

 

Put it back together and went for a drive instead!

 

I’m just not into working on cars any more! Lost my mojo I think!

In shock news Halfrauds really impressed me today. You may recall that I have a Metro, with 1.1 Kettle, but it’s sat for just over two years.

 

I put a new battery on it but lack of use rendered it scrap, wouldn’t accept any charge this week even using a slave battery to assist. I took the battery back today but didn’t have my receipt, I did have my statement entry though and they accepted this as evidence of purchase. Battery was exchanged under their three year warranty, happy days.

 

Metro started after the knackered fuel pump was replaced. Next stage is to replace the screen seals to get it dry.

I hear you on the mojo. I want to sell my 2cv, but I can't motivate myself to get into the garage and finish it off.

They're not. Sorry. 

 

Still a smart 406, like. They're many things, diesel Peugeots, but they're not fast cars, 'tweaked' or otherwise.

Just noticed in a pic I took of the 740 the other day, that the numberplate is printed a bit off kilter (zoom in you'll see, look at the left).

Oh well. I'm not changing it, because a) CBA, b} I hate new font on old cars, and c) it's been on there since 1990, as has the rear, and I've got a matching keyring.

There were different ways of making plates at the time.

Some were thin vinyl transfers that were rubbed down onto the reflective, with the glue on the perspex. Others have the digits stuck back to front on the rear of the perspex and glue on the reflective.

Some used pre cut letters held in place with a water mist.

All required to be put through a roller which could also be used to squish the apprentices Mars bar flat. ????

I used to make number plates,when i worked for GKN.

I hated the run up to August 1st,when the local Rover dealer block ordered plates for the new reg.

All made by hand and a roller

The definition of fast is "moving or capable of moving at high speed.", nearly every modern car is capable of moving at high speed.

Yes it's the one from the eBay thread.

 

They're fastish for a XUD. It doesn't feel as bogged down with weight like the Xantias I've had, and even accelerates up steep hills.

Oddly doesn't seem very insulated from engine noise though. Build quality again, oddly better than on equivalent aged Citroen's....

There's a very early (M plate) Rover 111i 5dr in Platinum Silver sat on a nearby driveway to my office, gradually going green and hasn't moved in some time now.  Last MOT in 2013, headlining's a bit droopy but it looks very rust-free, looks like a giffer car that's been retired.  I've almost been tempted to leave a note as the MOT history shows it's never had a rust advisory/fail and only has 15,000 miles on it. 

 

Not sure if it's really worth bothering with, mind, I have a nostalgic view of these as my mum had a near-identical 3dr 111i in 1995 as her first ever new car and I always liked it but in retrospect it was going rusty around the tailgate hinges at 1 year old and felt like a product from another age compared to the mk4 Fiesta that came after it.  Bags of character, mind and never gave any real trouble.

I quite liked making up numberplates while working for Halfrauds. A sandwich of reflective backing, thin plastic digits, and sticky-backed clear acrylic, all shoved through the roller with a squirt of antistatic spray, then trimmed with a boxcutter blade. Mostly they came out okay, though sometimes a bit bubbly if care wasn't taken when dropping the acrylic top layer on. Specially shaped ones (the aforementioned Rover 75 - also Pug 206 and Mk1 Focus hatch, if memory serves?) or black & silver ones weren't done in-store, they had to be ordered in specially.

 

I ordered up a set of black n' silvers for my Viva HC, and didn't realise until they were fitted that they'd put a digit in back to front - so the 8 wasn't reflective! Looked daft at night, and really bugged me.

The saph decided to tease me last night starting it up at work by showing the battery light at idle and disappearing when I revved, it did it again at home when I switched it off and re started to test it, so I decided to order a new alternator from eBay, this morning went out to it and it's now behaving itself, little bastard I thought, I did check the voltage output at idle whilst acceptable it is a little low so probably a good call after all

In the weekend I got the Sterling moved over to a mates with thanks to Red5 (supplied me with petrol and good battery)the Sterling started straight up and drove with no issues (apart from when the battery cables came off) but it goes to show that it still seemingly wants to live and drive despite a busted radiator, air for sills and a generally crusty appearance.

Just spent €230 at the Honda dealer for servicey stuff. :(

 

On the flip side the car has topped a 100k and I intend to keep it as long as possible.

the Sterling started straight up and drove with no issues (apart from when the battery cables came off)

Did the door windows randomly start going up and down?  My 820 used to do that when the earth cable came off the battery.

News from me? Hmm. I have a day off today to relax after the road-tripping at the weekend. I have my eye on a set of 16" steelies with winter tyres for the Mondeo. Somebody at work is selling them on smallads. Asking £180 and I offered £140 as they've been up for a few days. Good condition wheels and the tyres have lots of tread, and looking at gumtree / ebay et al suggests they're a decent price.

 

I just get the feeling this winter could be a bad one, I don't know where that feeling is coming from, but it just is. I also realise the Mondeo is exactly the type of car that would struggle in the white stuff. Big, heavy, fairly powerful and FWD. Not a good combination. Part of me also loves the idea of such a high trim level sitting on black steelies.

Seller seemed very reluctant to budge on the price.

 

I got creative, and have just placed an order from a big tyre seller on ebay. I now have winging their way to me a pair of Vredesteins and a pair of Contintentals, all with loads of tread still on them (lightly used part-worns) and they're 205/50/17s, for the grand total of £119.90. I know, I'll need to get them fitted somewhere too, but that shouldn't be too much.

 

Yes. I'm going to make my unsellable 17" original alloys my winter wheels. Derp! :D

I am now at the parents in north Wales on the way back home from the lakes. I've been driving my parent's DS4 2 litre HDi. It's nice. But keeps telling you to change up and then down again as it's the Lakes and so hilly and twisty with loads of OAPs. I also hate the electric handbrake, although its hill start assist is quite good- especially on the kirkstone pass!

 

The ride is ok, but you do feel every bump on the 19inch wheels and elastic band width tyres.

 

Hilarious* moment of the trip was in grasmere this morning when I stopped outside the papershop for my dad to jump out and get the paper while I was going to park over the road. Except he had the "key" in his pocket. Car had a nervous brakedown with sirens and flashing lights and turned itself off. In the middle of the road!

I like modern car stuff but my new car won't release it's handbrake unless I've got my seat belt on. Too far.

You can probably turn that feature off with a computer one way or another. 

My Abarth and the Mrs 500 had an un-disableable seatbelt beeper and mega sensitive "panic braking" hazard flash thing that would come on even in only mild hooning. 10 minutes later and they're both disabled with a £50 ebay knockoff delphi kit.

I've just not mustered up the will to work my way through the on board super computer to see if I can turn off.

It also says this when you start it up and the wheels are turned.

I found out the other day that the Aldi refuses to wipe it's wipers if the bonnet open. Now that makes sense if it is, to stop scratching the bonnet. However give it another 10years when the bonnet switch invariably has corroded up and died, your wipers will refuse to work. I just hope it won't do that if you're actually driving.
