Have a search on ebay for 'UK old font number plates' - £17 a pair delivered.

Bad idea. An N reg would never have had them from new (they were outlawed on new cars from 1/1/73) and you don't want to join all those thousands of MGBs with RONG plates.

Having said that, the current Perspex ones are a bit naff for the year too. Rather than fitting 1950s style plates on it like everyone does, you should embrace its age. How about some correct peaked reflectives? Google 'Tippers 70s plates'.

What this man says. I LOVE seeing MGBs with period-correct white/yellow plates. I also have a pretty severe dislike of MGBs from this era on wire wheels or minilites. Rostyles FTW!

I'm saying nuffink as I've run a B/W plate on my '76 Bonnie for years.

Black and whites the way to go, agree with the Rostyles though.

As someone who was a car loving child in the early 70's, it was quite unusual to see anything newish with black number plates. The only exceptions seemed to be those black perspex plates with striped numbers which still seemed to be fitted to 'classy' motors. The dude who ran the local pub had an L reg. Rover P5B with those fitted.

Speaking of number plates, has anyone got any recommendations for black and white/silver number plates? Both style (metal/plastic/raised/etc) and where to get them from.

I really want to put a set on the MGB, firstly because it's eligible for them and secondly I've never owned a car with them.

Do you think the number plates on my MGB GT are original?

It is registered May 1972, I have owned the car over 6 years and this is how it came to me, the lady before me had had it 19 years and never upgraded anything else. Are these plates correct for 1972?

Actually I quite like them. A real contender over black and white plates. I've kinda given up with period correctness and originality now. I'm just going with what I like or what works (e.g. Poly bushes, non-SU fuel pump). :P

It seems to only be in the UK we care about such things. In Germany, you don't get too much choice if you have a historic car with a historic plate. The black and white plates I could see becoming a thing with the tax+MOT exemption as a sign that its eligible for it - i.e. a historic car too. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm certain that the reason my MGB can wear those plates now is because of this rolling historic class (and thus tax exemption).

I really want to... because it's eligible...

Firstly, just because you can, doesn't mean you should...

Exhibit A:

Lovely set of Hills reflective plates with semi-peak digits.

Exhibit B:

Harder to tell, but could be a set of Jepsons as the "S", "J" & "2" isn't as curved.

and secondly I've never owned a car with them.

Buy an older car then.

Incidentally, I like this style front grill more than the honeycomb one they put on later (which mine has). Both are far nicer (in my eyes) than the garish chrome bar one that originally they came with and a lot of people seem to like to retrofit.

This of course goes against the average MGB owner who likes the bars first, then honeycomb, then your style and finally rubber bumpers. For me though, I think its yours first, then honeycomb + rubber bumpers as a joint (but with a front splitter on rubbers) and bottom with the bars...

I had a 71 and a 72, both looked like yours.

Yes, because I can see from here without enlargement that they are Hills of the period. How? The little aluminium extra bit at the bottom of the border:

A 1970 plate like that will be to BS AU 145:1967

Also: curved 5 and O, open 4 and little serifs on D and J.

The Vitesse was one owner until 2000, but off the road for some years at the end of the ownership. Then another owner who put it back on the road for 5 years then me from 2005. Still only 76,000 miles total.

I like all the other chrome bumper MGB grills better than mine and I was going to change it when I got the car. Now I have got used to it and I am happy to keep it original.

My 1971 Wolseley 18/85 had the supplying dealership "SMACs of Essex" on a little tab similar to the Hills tab above. Those were its original peaked reflective plates, made by Tippers. It definitely wasn't illegal until the mid 80s as my 1980 Royale has its original Jacksons of Otley (GM/Vauxhall) plates and I've seen plenty of cars around T,V,W reg with Perspex dealer plates.

Wanted to find the photo of the two Hyundai Stellars I took so I could share it with you all today.

There was no photo.

It was just a really vivid dream.

I don't normally react to clickbait.

However, seeing as everybody that has a rubber stamp in their drawer over here wants to stop us driving old chod I was quite interested to learn of Singapore's remedy for road-clog.   Ban the new stuff and it is only a matter of time before the roads look like 1976 again!

I was moving a young and trendy couple from an obnoxiously large house today. The guy was very keen to tell me about his forthcoming appearance on Grand Tour where him and a friend race downhill on skateboards against James May driving uphill in . . . blah blah, whatever mate, not bothered.

My estimation of him went up hugely however when I looked in their garage. . .

This fine day, I jumped into my freshly-washed Honda S-MX and did drive it to Hinckley, where I had been promised much excitement.

DOMMuHdW4AAZQ8O.jpg

Oh, a Figaro! But it's not even an exciting colour.

DOMNAB9XkAARLNg.jpg

That's more like it! Mk3 Astra saloon, mit facelift. YUM.

DOMOl8bW4AADTUd.jpg

Then I went and did some work*, during which this was noticed.

DOM0OMjWsAA5gmC.jpg

That'll be at about 5psi then! I could easily see a sodding great screw sitting in the middle of the tread. Sigh.

I was relived of many pounds, but all is now well again.

DOM5rsRX0AAiDEY.jpg

While waiting for said tyres, I said I wanted a proper brew. The chap pointed me in the direction of Greggs or Costa. SOD THAT!

DOM1GCAWkAAULny.jpg

Chintzy Tea Room level unlocked. A Victoria Sponge was being freshly assembled. It was very tasty.

I apparently own a Honda ?

I then went to Leamington Spa, which was rather more pleasant. There I bought Lexus parts, but not useful ones.

Now I'm in a hotel in Solihull, which has kindly matched the bedroom decor to my clothes.

It has been a long, but enjoyable day.
