Now cable tie your son's hands behind his back so he can't break it again!

All these fancy electronic roofs seem to get very upset if they get out of sequence or interrupted in their operation. I'd always make sure the engine is running and have a good battery.

My wife called me at work this afternoon, yelling that the roof had jammed halfway-up on her CLK floppytop.  I knew it was just a matter of time before this happened, but we've only had the bastard thing 6 days.  I go over and raise it manually, after using the bypass valve in the boot.  She drives it home but the roof doesn't work in either direction now, the button just flashes slowly.  My son is getting the blame for holding the button while she was starting the engine.

Searching Google for possible answers, it becomes clear most CLK owners are not the most able DIYers and pages and pages of forum posts eventually end with them spending £££ at dealers.  But I've fixed it!  I opened and closed it manually a couple of times, and operated the lock on the top cover using a spanner - this seemed to be the problem, it was locked but the catch on the top hadn't engaged.  I don't know if this a microswitch failing or the fact the sequence was interrupted when the engine was started, but either way I'm feeling smug right now.

Strange thing I had a conversation tonight with a chap about a CLK he had new and the dealer had to come out to him because the roof would not move, turns out there was a reset button for just when the sequence was interrupted.

Any gas struts involved in the roof car mechanism?

I believe they weaken and prevent micro switch engagement

Mate finished the welding on the CX at the weekend.  All* it should need for a test now is the suspension return pipe leak sorting (again), the handbrake adjusting up and possibly a pair of tyres on the front.  Then it should be good for another year (or for me to use for the rest of the summer and then sell on in the autumn).  Mate has now said he'll be happy to have a bash at welding up the Trafic, so that may yet get a new lease of life.

Also, this is what my old A35 looks like now.  A significant improvement I think you'll concede.  It even has brakes now.

All very well until you have a three-oh-six and the hood only works with engine off...

As non-bling car stereos go, I think these would make a great alternative to modern disco headunits when your car is missing one.

They're from a Matiz, so no doubt plentiful and dirt cheap.

I have one of these in the Rover:

FM, CD, and aux in, easy to use too. Mine was £20 in a charity shop, boxed, with wiring adaptors, two sorts of removal pins, bezel, instructions, pretty much everything, even the original receipt for £79.99 from Halfords Bournemouth in late 2009. Sounds good, looks understated too. Buttons light up red and the display is white, with no disco nonsense. Quite a few on eBay for £20ish.

I have the cassette version of that unit in The Volvo, mated to a 10 disc CD changer which I've owned for 17 years. It sounds really good and as it's a non-logic control cassette player, it allows me to use my 'cassette with a tail' MP3 player adaptor without the auto reverse going doo-lally, a feat which neither of the period correct mid-1990s logic control Blaupunkt units I possess can manage  :)

Ha! On my way home yesterday what do I spot? An actual Mk1 Rover Sterling out in the wild. It was modified though (and not exactly very tastefully either) I shot into the petrol station blaring my horn in the hi-top Transit 'welfare' van I was driving. Sterling owner probably thought who the heck is this?

Turns out I had spoken to the owner and his son over the phone some years ago as he was a member of an old Rover forum I used to frequent. I didn't even get any pictures but hey Ho. I know of the car anyway.

Also, spotted a Mk2 800 on the M6 Southbound. Don't know if it was a Vitesse or Sterling though.

Was it H895 NOA? Grey Sterling with stupid big alloys? That's my mate Dave Wilkinson's dad's car if so. Lives in the Wednesbury area.

I know they've only recently put it back on the road after some prolonged fuel issues.

The very one. As I got closer with my scary "welfare" van I saw the plate and recognised it straight away. I'd spoken to Dave previously but only buy phone. Last time I spoke to him must've been about 2012/13-ish.

Never saw the car in the metal until now. It's a Mk1 'c' which is basically the same as mine except for; no rear electric seats, slimline trip computer and better electrics.

Any updates on your own fleet?

Bargain! Well for what they go for nowadays.

What is it? VCDS is a diagnostic program for VAG vehicles. Does almost everything a dealer can do. Essential for shit VAG products.

It's price was helped by being in completely the wrong eBay category.

Whether a cock up or offer I'm not sure but 450ml of WD40 is £2.75 in my local Tesco. It certainly offers value when the 200ml tin next to it is £3.00! :-D

Aren't Rosstech tightwads with licencing? last time I looked, they keyed the licence to PC and wouldn't transfer it to another one, or something similarly draconian, making 2nd hand units pretty much useless unless it came with the pc or you got snide software. In which case you might as well have just got a snide cable too!

I serviced the girlfriends Old petrol A class Mercedes yesterday as the oil looked more like old tar and it's never been changed while she's had the car and even the dipstick had rusted up so I chucked a bottle of engine flush in for good measure.

It was fun and games getting to the oil filter which had collapsed but all was ok and I put the 5 litres (with the flush) in an old oil can to take to the tip.

But today I got into work and the 13 plate DAF Lorry we use was bone dry so we couldn't drive it and it wasn't even showing on the dipstick and our diesel card won't let us have oil so I thought the only answer was to reuse the mixture of tar and flush and pour the 5 litres in the motor.

It's still running but I doubt it will do it much good.

Nah, I'm afraid not. Wife comes first and it's becoming increasingly expensive supporting her and keeping my own head above water. I doubt anything will be done with them until I get her over here.

VCDS-Lite aka the old version uses KKL cables. The official adapter for that is just a KKL lead. This is locked to a pc. Also this version only goes up to around 2003/2004. Basically end of Golf MK4.

Full VCDS does those cars too (more functionality) but requires a different interface. This interface is effectively the licencing dongle. So you can use it on as many PCs as you like.

There is different versions of the cable. The one I've bought can be used on car models released before 2015. Basically the new Q7 and new, new A4 aren't supported. It can be used on any number of cars.

They've just released a new one - HEX-V2. This is locked to the VIN of the car. Three versions exist - 3/10/unlimited VINs.

My one has been discontinued. So the one I've got actually has gone up a little in the second hand market! My mate bought the same one in 2013 for £190 off eBay. Not cheap, cheap but you can easily get your money back when you sell.

The one I have may not be the latest, but it's going to be good (especially for me!) for a long while yet.

Adding accessories to a car is a minefield as is well known to the eBay tat thread. I have put on one new old stock mudflap to the Mondy and I think I like it. Suits it's overall Gifferness. I think I'll just do the fronts though.

On WD40?  The production date is 06/05/17, as far as I know it doesn't have an expiry date.

I've used 40 year old WD40 and it's better than the new stuff. Which is not to say it's actually any good for anything, but it smells better.

I have never, ever, managed to finish a tin of WD40, they always vanish, almost as soon as I buy them.

Or you drop a brand new can off the bench and snap the nozzle bit off flush
