Old transit embarrasses modern Hyundai.

I drive to and from my house build project every night after work. On the way home, there is a stretch of road that I can free wheel down. It's 2.1 miles of roll that contains two notable uphill sections and two sharp corners. And a junction.

Obviously, I coast down this section every night, trying to beat my maximum distance up the final hill.

Tonight I was in the transit. I thought the wind resistance would count against it and that I would probably not make it passed one of the uphill sections. I would also have to slow down more then the Hyundai for the first sharp corner. Speed carried round this corner is crucial but braking is required as it's at the bottom of quite a steep section and death would befall me if I didn't slow down.

The old tranny gubbed the Hi'n'Dry. It made it passed the road sign. I've never been near the road sign before.

Now, I've been doing a lot of physics lately, as daughter had a physics exam last week and I have been helping* her. At first I thought it must be the extra mass increasing the potential energy to be converted to kinetic, but surely the mass after equals the mass before? The m cancels!! Plus, more resistive forces due to slab frontedness.

Think I'll check the Hyundai doesn't have a sticking brake.

Less rolling resistance on narrow commercial tyres rather than low profiles? More commanding view of the road allowing more speed to be carried round first bend?

I think the Omega is still such a good looking car ...

Dragged the MV6 out of its 18 month slumber today. It hasn't even been started in that time, took a spare battery with me but before changing it I tentatively stuck the negative lead back on the current battery and she fired into life!

All 4 tyres blown up and a gentle move up the road to bring it home took place.

Looks cleaner in the picture, it's become absolutely manky in the short time it's been off the road. I will jet wash it tomorrow then make a decision on what I'm doing. I will need to throw a few quid at it for MOT I think.

So as mentioned above,I was asked to display a few cars from my car club at the Otley college............

Looks like it was a good day out, I'd love to have a good look at the DAF/Volvo pair. Shame I couldn't make it, especially with the weather being somewhat better than it was when we last met! It was a rather intense weekend of work on the house for me.

Did at least find time to drive a couple of my old things. Camry was used to get materials on Saturday morning, then the Laurel for dad's taxi duty yesterday. With the excitement of getting the 1200 and Camry back on the road I seem to have not used it as much recently, but it was as good as ever. Will use it for work today. After driving the 1200 it feels positively fast and sophisticated....

Also check the wheel bearings, and what DodgeRover said (tyre width).

I've just had odd phone call from someone on ebay about my P6, a guy from Bolton who's came down to buy a P6 in Surrey but found it's a heap when he's got there so was ringing about mine whilst he's down south, he's offered me what the last buyer was going to pay without looking at the car in cash and is currently driving to Sittingborune first and then heading to mine to buy my car?. I'm at work and even though Mrs Triggers about she has the little girl so i feel a bit awkward about that and i haven't got the spares in the car yet or got it really do be collect after using it yesterday.

Maybe I'm worrying needlessly but it all feels a bit quick for my liking.

Oh dear

Oh FFS. You didn't buy it, did you?

Collecting it tomorrow. 320touring has pledged to super tune it to 100bhp.

Meh, I need transport, I have lots of meetings, want to go to college, etc.

Have you bought a SEAT Inca van?

My mechanic tells me that a law change means you cannot drive a car now after an MOT fail even if it still has test. Is this true? I can't believe we haven't had a thread about it if so!!

I'm knackered and filthy, just finished rustroofing the Landcruiser with Bilt Hamber;s finest, well i've done the cavities and the whole of the underside and chassis inside and out, still got to remove each wheel and coat the wheel arches and whatever small bits i might have missed, got a week off in two weeks so i'll do those then.

Got to change all the transmission oils so the underbody protection plates can stay off for a couple weeks and i'll do those oils at the same time.

Satisfying job if horrible, cost me around £230 in product this time between Zinc paint and the two different waxes, but still £250/300 cheaper than the pros would charge.

Umm. Yeah, I thought I'd have heard about it. Fusion MOT on Friday, Mondy a week on Tuesday. Different garages as I like to spread the love* for old Fords.

In other news, I saw my first STOMIL at the Grampian Transport Museum's 'How Many Left' show yesterday.

YvaWQaQ.jpg

Drove the 305 to Heathrow. It was probably the least valuable car in its short stay car park. I captured its best side.

YeBnZqc.jpg

I left Peebo at 5.30 to get there in time; security clearance was a predictable comedy of errors and shrieking kids.

First time I've ever flown to a car show in the UK. Driving there simply wasn't practical in the time I had available.

This is the furthest north I've ever been in Scotland, unless Alloa is further up.

rSiHKqT.jpg

There was at least two Autoshiteists there - Supernaut and 17-Coffees.

The autotest was great fun. It was also nice to see that more than one Mk1 Cavalier had survived beyond the show car owned by the Cavalier and Chevette Owners' Club.

I got a bollocking for standing too close to the action. My blagged 'one size fits none' hi-vis didn't offer me enough immunity.

PC lot were up in Scotland so I cadged a lift back to the airport with them in their comically overloaded 1.3-litre Maestro.

Back and forth to Aberdeen International Airport in an afternoon.

An Aberdeen Airbus. 1hr 5 back to Heathrow rather than 8 hours + in the car.

Parking charges. Expletives deleted. I'm travelling to Heathrow by train next time.

Incorrect.

Agreed. I took full advantage of this with the Xantia last year by having it MOT'd a full month before, where it failed on a few things! Was still legal to get it fixed and it passed with 3 days to go.

It's something I'm doing with the gooner as close to the 29th of June as I can, just in case! (test expires July 25th).

There have been threads about it as I asked it at the time, and all the MOT chaps said that unless it was a mega-fail (think subframe rotted out, axle snapped etc) it's fine. Indeed the guys at the test centre I used first time knew what I was doing as they gave me tips on how to fix it up (and confirmed all bar the emissions when I went back for the re-test that it failed on).

I then looked mega-dodgy by taking it for a test 33 miles away where it passed... (after being fixed!)

Jesus £60 bastard quid?

Should have bought a £20 car and just left it there...

There hasn't been any rule change; your car has to be roadworthy (cue can of worms) regardless of whether it fails an early MoT or not and that's always been the case.

I confirmed this with the DVSA because a few people flagged it up at work.

A few media outlets including Garage Wire and Motoring Research picked up on a scrapcarcomparison.co.uk. article that got its knickers in a twist and that's where we think the misinformation came from.

I took the sharp corner slower in the T and yet the minimum speed which is on the first uphill section after the sharp corner was faster in the T than the H - 20mph versus 10mph.

I'll check tyre pressure first. Must be a momentum thing.

Thanks, this looks like the offending piece. No matter, the Fusion is going to fly through m9

I generally get a trusted* chap to take it for me, then they can keep it and sort for the inevitable remedial Fix Or Repair Daily faults.

Was that on the UAZ?

Also, I clocked that Maestro in the car park! Thought it was just a local old giffer who owned it.

Yes, it was.

The Maestro belongs to one of the PC crew.

Is it misinformation? Let's look at the facts. Your car fails the MOT. You go for a drive. Dibble stop you, pull up the details, spot the MOT fail so know you're driving an unroadworthy vehicle. There's no actual offence of 'driving your vehicle after it has failed an MOT,' which is why nothing has changed from before. It's just that the information is now more readily accessible.

Would I drive home after a fail? Yes, probably, depending entirely on what it was.

Yes, fair enough. My mechanic's point was getting it tested a month early means you'd 'lose' a months use of a car if the fail is terminal.

Of course, he doesn't know that I'd almost always spend what it takes to get it through :-), (and probably good that he doesn't!)

In the Fusion's case, as it the main family transport, I'd always rather know about a problem sooner rather than later anyway.

I sold a bike like that once.

He'd driven to my area to view another, it wasn't as described so phoned up & headed over to look at mine. The way he figured it, he was already here & had hired a van so it was worth a look. Sold it for the asking price, no issues.

Well the P6 has gone. but credit where it's due the buyer seemed spot on, he said he'll be at mine by 5pm which he was, i was at work so Mrs Trigger showed him the car, he walked round it, started it up and just said he'll have it! Cash handed over and now he's driving it 260 miles back to Bolton.

This does now mean that i have funds for a new toy though which is dangerous!
