Examined the door locking mechanism on the daily to try and establish if there is a reason why the drivers door no longer unlocks remotely.

Door card off, nothing obvious visible. Pathetically sprayed WD40 on anything that looked vaguely mechanism based and quite literally no improvement took place. Realised I was getting cold and a bit bored to be honest so sacked it off, came indoors, and watched four episodes of Poldark back to back.

Oddly enough it did work normally for one day this week and hasn't worked since. Probably a small piece of plastic worth tuppence has given up the ghost somewhere. Either way it's not life threatening

Well that went predictably badly.

Went to the shed, started up the Vauxhall, it ran like shit and died when I took my foot off the gas, as usual.

Removed the airbox so I could get to the fast idle screw, turned it a bit one way. Car wouldn't start at all. Turned it a bit the other way, car started and ran maybe a bit better. After filling the shed with a good amount of carbon monoxide, I felt brave enough to go for a drive.

Happy days, drove home fine and gave the Victor a light shampoo and wax as it was a little dusty. Celebrated with a cup of tea.

Then went to drive it back to the shed. It started, eventually, but was back to running as badly as ever. It won't idle without a load of throttle, misfires horribly and the exhaust tries to smash itself to bits on the towbar mounting. No amount of sitting and trying to warm it up helps any. Limped back to the shed like that.

I'm sick of this now. It's consumed two of the three waking hours this weekend I'm not spending working (again). It's already had an entirely new HT-side ignition system, points gapped, new condenser, coil rewired. The carburettor is clean and there's no sign of a blockage. Please don't bother suggesting how to fix it, I don't have time and don't care (although thanks anyway). I'm away working 6 days a week until Christmas so I can't take it to a garage, either.

If somebody wants to make me a ridiculously low offer to come and take this car away I'll almost certainly say yes.

Can I have pics and a price idea?

If I was having connection problems in that light cluster I would solder wires to the circuit board and then solder those wires into the loom

or

use connector block and cut off the original connector. Photos and notes of what wire goes where.

Here's one from today when I was briefly pleased with it:

Being serious, I should just hang on to it until I have some time in January and then get it properly sorted somewhere.  You would have to persuade me it was going to a good home, I owe that to the previous owners.

Mate has a 2nd gen previa with the d4d lump.

Engine light shows fault code for intake circuit. Removing and cleaning the air intake sensor in the intercooler to turbo pipe temporarily clears code.

Said pipework is very oily. Not clogged with carbon or anything just coated in engine oil. The sensor looked oily too before being cleaned.

Seems to drive fine too, although there is potentially a lack of power however neither of us having driven another one we don't know if it's lacklustre performance is normal or not.

He's hoping the turbo isn't fuckrd however to me oil in intake pipework would suggest blown seals on turbo?

I'm having connection problems with TalkTalk, the only positive thing I can say for them is that after spiking the router off of a concrete floor, it now appears to be working.

It seems I have inadvertently started a violent schism in the 2cv world by printing a ccc member's submission to the effect that he set his valve clearances to .25mm rather than the Citroen Bible of 0.2mm. I may have to resign!

Happily the editor is on my side of the discussion ( stroke argument, stroke civil war).

I thought next month's topic on tyre pressure would be controversial ;-)

Edit for those not in the know - valve clearances as per Citroen spec are perfect. For fuel produced up to thirty years ago. Since then Citroen stopped selling the 2cv and fuel stopped being full of lead additives and dropped several octane ratings. None of which the 2cv is entirely happy with unless adjustments are made. Which is where the problem lies.

Ps. I can't mention the replies in full from well known 2cv people that the ccc editor has recieved, but one began " shut up you ignorant gimp".

I am desperately trying to get hold of a rear bulb holder for my Visa.

I ordered one from Germany but it arrived and the same friggin light that was knackered on mine was fooked on this one.......

There is one on Ebay here but I flatly refuse to pay £109 for it FFS.

Surely I can get one cheaper than that? I need all my pennies to replace the clutch.

I managed to find my way onto a website the other week where there were several of them but now I cant find it again as I am a chump.

Does anyone have any good suggestions of where to looks for parts for relatively obscure French cars?

Mike Harker is your man.

I'm quite tempted to make a silly offer myself but your the wrong end of the country for a car that doesn't run probably. I'm sure it's nothing to major that needs looking at.

Still feel really bad about that poor 2300S. I would have thought a reputable classic car mechanic will be able to diagnose the fault with not too much expenditure on your part. Would be nice for you to get some use out of it, like I did, because it always was a good runner and nice to drive.

Oh I'd call him far worse. And probably have. Because we're pals - I'm not even a member of the CCC...

Fit a towbar to the P6, hire a transporter trailer for the day, job jobbed.

Don't feel bad AngryD, it was fine when I picked it up :-) And sometimes, if I manage to warm it up enough before driving off, it's fine - and a very pleasing old bus.

I'm just frustrated at my inability to fix it. A few other (experienced, sensible) people have had a go and none of them have done any better so far.

Replaced the condenser so it shouldn't be that. I suppose it's not impossible the new one is duff too, but unlikely, and there's no blackening of the points that you'd expect to see if the condenser was out.

I'm sure it's fixable but frankly it's about as simple as cars get so I really ought to be able to sort it out myself. God help me with a V12 or a Lancia flat twin that runs the power steering off the cam belt.

My word thats a lot nicer than I was anticipating (and therefore way too nice for me and probably well out of my price range), I should hang on to that too if I was you, you have checked that the tank isn't vacuuming haven't you?

Don't feel too bad - I just went downstairs to make myself a bowl of cereal, which required opening a new bottle of milk.  I then put the foil lid into the cereal bowl and poured the milk into the bin.

Other than 'because Lancia' why would you drive the power steering off the cambelt?

It is a daft bit of design.  The PAS system had been disconnected on my Gamma - it was still perfectly manageable without it.

Made contact with the seller of the reasonably priced T4 today.  Seems like a decent bloke and the van sounds genuine enough - he's just been using it as a work van, I don't think he's a dubber.  Collection scheduled for Friday.

Mine was the same, so fixed it with some dyson brushes for now. Keep us posted on the upgrade as I'll be doing the same at some point.

Job done. Took around five hours in all, but not difficult really. Some creative trimming of the plastic fan shroud required to enable removal/refitting around the air con pipework though. The low and high speeds now work as intended, the low speed is pretty fast, the high speed is very fast! The new fan runs anticlockwise when viewed from the front (as it is meant to... Still blows air through the radiators, Not sucking and running backwards!). The original runs clockwise ISTR. All seems well so far, but only done around 45 miles since.
