Whereabouts is that black borough place?

Posted

For a change I actually thought I'd fix something on the car today.

Windows been getting stuck here or just above when trying to wind it down for ages meaning to have to open the door and use two hands.

So using my best Tommy Walsh and Rolson I took the panel off

post-17845-0-03234700-1474144427_thumb.jpg

And didn't look like anything that different to what had happened before with the rubber falling out if the runner, but this time it was more split in two

post-17845-0-02153100-1474144510_thumb.jpg

Put a bit of tape on to keep it in place but was still binding at the very top so put some copper slip in the runner near where the glass comes out the door and it seems to have cured it.

Need to replace the whole seal really though and the front

But can't find anywhere that does them.

Not Woolworths, cos they don't do a good selection of anything anymore. Perhaps they never did. Well except the Pic n Mix.

google "seals direct" and down load their catalogue.

it has full sized sections of the many and various seals and the like which they sell, with luck you will be able to match one up to your kippered one,.

Whereabouts is that black borough place?

It is up in the Blackdown hills near Cullompton. The house has sold so this was the last chance to see it before the grounds get cleared. It was a legendary scrap yard back in the 70's but the owner was very hard to deal with, hence everything being totally rotten as he would hoard stuff rather than sell it.

Today has been very busy. With the house move a month ago, the garage ended up being a proper shitstate, a holding pen for all the rubbish, spares and detritus that MrsH said I couldn't bring in the house. I ordered some heavy duty racking and it turned up a fortnight ago. Finally, despite being full of cold and snot, I pulled the Mini out and set to work. There are lots of pictures because somebody will like them!

So, Mini out...

The rubbish needing a home.

Fortunately, this garage has a partition wall with a soundproof room at the back. After much deliberation, it was decided that it will be the storage room. I emptied all the stuff out of it (pic in the middle)

And with the Mini basking in the sunshine for the first time in ages, I set to work.

Cleaned and hoovered, ready for the first racking unit.

Archie, assisting in his usual manner of getting in the way.

Of the four racking units I bought for this, these were the best condition instructions of the lot. Right then.

First one up.

Second and third followed quickly.

Eventually, I forgot to take pictures but a friend came round to help me with the sorting and tidying, and within a couple of hours, we had this.

This'll get sorted out later when I work out what I want.

Loads of spares in one room, in an organised chaos sort of way.

Finally found a home for all those Haynes manuals!

So there you go. Not bad for an evenings work, I can move freely around the garage for the first time since we moved in!

I dream of having a garage in the vague vicinity of my actual house.

I'll be honest, it was the number 1 priority to us. We didn't even entertain looking at a house if it didn't have a garage. Thankfully MrsH was in agreement with me, it's not quite a double in there but I suppose there's room to extend if I ever fancy it.

Near the house is good. In the house, I've discovered, is rubbish.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Space is space to be filled. That's why I've stopped tidying up.

Saw a Civic on ebay, 10 minutes left with no bids. Thought I'd add one, but no one else did after that.......

Attempted to do the front disc's on the Lexus yesterday, could't get the driver side caliper off due to the bolts being on silly tight. Not helped by the fact theirs not much room to play about with for getting leverage. Will see if anyone I know has a compressor and gun it off. Sadly my work is an arse and won't let us work on our cars in the workshop in our spare time (tea brake, weekend, etc)

As well as that, Supernaut is tempted to buy my old Civic Aerodeck (he's made a thread about it, so he has to buy it now?) so let him have a good poke about it. He knows the car back in it's former glory (before I parked it up) but had't seen it since.

Finally, while he was over with the 316 we though we'd finally deal with the issue with the blowing exhaust (Where the front & rear pipes join), I had a tube of Wurth exhaust paste and fixed* it...

29684233601_af685e54bc_c.jpgThat'll fix it...

Bloody thing still blows a tiny bit.

Also found out that an LS400 and & will scrape badly when you have 5 people in it, the boot filled with heavy stuff (4 brake discs, full 20ltr jerry can, tools, full water bottles, spare wheel and general crap) and a full tank of fuel.

This one, if it is as described I'd say that's a good deal. Would rather have a 3 door as well

Now to sell the Rover ASAP since I don't want to take out another insurance policy and tax two cars

Looks a good buy and it has saved me from getting rid of the Golf which might have been a bad idea anyway :)

If it does turn out to be a nail I'd still be interested in the Golf though

I had a civic like that in 3dr 1.7 ctdi. Aircon could be condenser, as it's in front of the radiator and is prone to stones. Mine was at least.

The aircon was a bit pants though. Never ice cold. My parents had the 5dr 1.6 facelift from new, that aircon was rubbish too.

Though better than no aircon!

Posted

Shouldn't need air con until the spring now, hopefully by then I'll be in a position to buy something (whisper it) newer

Posted

Very useful for speedy demisting and keeping it clear tbh. Especially handy with the huge, slanted screen that is on the civic.

Small amount of progress on 5 year mission to replace engine in ZT-T

Needed to moved the AMC Rebel - I had all the plugs out for a quick look and compression last week.  Broke one plug in that fiasco so put a new one in - connected all HT leads that I'd left lying around.  Car fired up OK, but was a bit lumpy.  Ran well enough to shift it.  Then opened the bonnet and realised I'd left 2 of the leads from the other bank off - so I had a V6.  I probably should give up really.

I did something similar on my Granada recently. Did a load of work, reassembled it all and fired it up to move the car. It ran but wasn't good. Got out and thought 'wtf is wrong now!'. I'd put two HT leads back on the wrong plugs. What a dumb ass!

I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to sell the Hyundai van, much to my disappointment.  With the Movano having unexpectedly sailed through its MOT and having unexpectedly been behaving faultlessly ever since, I can't really justify keeping both vans.  The Movano is bigger, faster, better on diesel, more comfortable, handles better when laden and is LEZ compliant.  Objectively the only areas it loses out are that it won't fit into a normal parking space, I can't see out of the back and the turning circle is appalling, unlike the H100 which turns on a sixpence.

For some reason, though, I still prefer driving the Hyundai.  Maybe because it's so much better than I thought it would be, whereas I fully expected the Movano to be boringly competent.  In fact it was a very close decision over which one to keep - the only thing that tipped the balance in the Vauxhall's favour was that it has 11 months' MOT whereas the Hyundai only has 2.

I might bung a For Sale thread up on here for the H100 in the morning.

While I'm waiting to see what's in store for me this academic year (I know I'm going to university but not sure if full/part time, and how I'll be funding myself), I've been reading about Prides and Nippas.

Perodua made rebadged Terioses too. Hm.

I have a choice between an 850cc car with £1300 insurance, or a 1300cc car with £750 insurance. It's a no brainer on paper - more power, less cost for same initial outlay (tax, purchase price and collection costs are negligible).

But for some reason I want to lean towards the Nippa - then again at the moment there's every chance I'll end up with a 405, that to be honest I'd really bloody like. Slightly* more ruinous financially, but hey, don't kick a gift horse in the mouth and all that.

I sort of want to experience a Kia Pride - I can find a lot about the Nippa, but not a lot about the Pride aside from the fact that it's a car, and eh, it's okay.

Head says Pride, heart says buy all the tickets left for the 405, silly hat says Nippa, or something else entirely.

This is AS, anyway, fuck knows what I'm going to end up with.
