I know there's lots of love for Merkel here, but I didnt expect the Stasi to come round and change the title of my thread quite so soon, Herr Moderator.

I've been trying to change the thermostat housing on the Rover for the past couple of days, but keep suffering motivation failures.  Everything is so bloody awkward to access!  Yesterday I only managed to get the top trim panel off before slinking off inside for some tea, biscuits and a browse of Imagefap Autoshite.

Tried to fix the hissing brake servo on t'Saab too, I suspected it would be the one-way valve in the hose but the bloody thing snapped in 2 when I tried to remove it.  So that's off the road too.

Well, that explains a few things.  The inlet manifold gasket on the Rover that was new last year has failed and been successfully leaking just like it was when I got the car.  I've got two more that a friend sent me so I'm hoping they'll be better quality.  It could be a jiggered plastic manifold too, who thought plastic manifolds were a good idea?

Well bought trigger, I have a hankering for a P6 at some point. If Junkman hasn't bought them all by then...

Trig, all the manual P6's I've ever been in (three) have all had that little stubby gearlever! It's original, an odd feature of them.

Anybody know why the gear lever is really stumpy on it? Looking on google they are normally longer?

Looks pretty normal to me to be honest. They're a strange, stumpy little thing anyway. Nice buy!

EDIT - in other news, had a lovely day at the Retro Rides Gathering. Met a few Autoshiters, watched folk of varying talent (and power) tackle the hill and didn't do a fat lot else. Stuff going up the hill includes: A 3-door Astra Mk2 estate with quite a lot of power. A mk3 Escort estate with quite a lot of power. A beige Trabant estate with very little power. A Cadillac hearse with quite a lot of fuel slurping. A Volvo 940 driven by a lunatic. A rally-spec Volkswagen Beetle with very little power. A turbocharged Corrado VR6 which had far too much power. A twin-engined Mini Clubman estate with a very strange soundtrack. A Merc W123 230TE which proved that yes, the hill is quite steep. A Volkswagen K70 with a W8 engine. Lovely variety! Pics/vids to follow.

I remember driving Conrad D. Conelrad's 2000 and that being short but this one seems mega short, shorter than the one's on Google images?. Maybe it's just me, I'll investigate once it's home.

Trig, if you want a hand with the leather give me a shout. I do like a challenge! I have products.

Ace buy but please remember to use the disklok, take the rotor arm out and immobilise the battery. Oh, also wire it up to the mains.

Thanks, it has a immobiliser key thing on the wing which still works but that Disklok will be used on it!

Thats well nice Trig, I do love the P6, even more now than ever before.

The gear lever looks normal to me.  I know the SD1 had a big old gearstick for the LT77 box but the P6's normally tend to have these shorter stubbier levers.

Just found a water pump in my dining room. I've no idea how I came by it. KCP1505 in a QH box. Seems to be for XUD or DW8. Maybe I'll put it with the Ford 1.6 diesel water pump I've had sitting around for ages - sent in error and they didn't want it back (nor did I fancy posting it given the nearest post office is 12 miles away).

Anyway, the discovery of the first water pump is almost as odd as finding used spark plugs in the bedroom...

For someone who's too lazy to give his cars a good clean I always seem to win cleaning stuff...

Thankfully my friend who does cleaning detailing doesn't mind if I give him the stuff to use when he does my car's, just charging me for his time. So expect this to be used for not just the Lexus, but for 'Shed IV' as well. :)

Below my avatar its telling me I have 0 warning points.

What do I need to do in order to get some?  But a silver 1 series on finance?  Scrap a Maxi?  Go on  a collection thread without a camera?

Forgetting the pez station shot in a collection thread should be a warning able offence. Even if there's enough fuel to get you home in the tank go and buy a fucking curley wurley or something!

I was wondering about that too.

Nice purchase Trigbert.  I can confirm that the 2.2 engine is a worthwhile upgrade - not that much more power than a 2000SC but noticeably torquier.

Don't know if you'll get a Disklok to fit round a non-PAS P6 wheel though?  Those things make a W126 Merc look like a Peugeot 208.

The Renault 6 is now safely ensconced in its new garage.  It drove the 20 miles home with no problems apart from the sticky front brake, which was bad to start with (to the extent that I had to pull over and twat the caliper with the wheelbrace at one point) but freed off after that.  It buzzed along quite happily on the NSL A-road and didn't misbehave in the usual bank holiday traffic jam through Wroxham.

In fact it was running well enough that I then drove it the 25-mile round trip to see my welding mate to see what he'd charge me to weld it up (£ lots, was the answer - it does need a fair bit doing, bless it.  I kept remembering extra bits of grot that I'd found and treated two years ago before I put it away in the garage).  It's been years since I'd driven it in the dark, and I'd forgotten how surprisingly adequate the headlights are, given that they're tiny and non-halogen.  Beats the shit out of the Rover 600 on dipped beam.  I even overtook a Transit van on the way back - low weight, a reasonably torquey engine and low gearing means it accelerates from 40 to 60 in quite an acceptable manner.

414 cambelt update.  Mike and I downed tools about an hour ago having nearly finished the job.  Just got a bit too cold and dark to finish off since we're doing it at home and the garage is just a bit too narrow to work in.  Not much left to do, just the inlet manifold to reconnect, the expansion bottle to reconnect, fresh coolant and putting the power steering belt on, be a lot easier and quicker in the daylight tomorrow.

It has had a cambelt done at some point as it was wearing a Gates branded one.  It's also had a waterpump at some point.  It hasn't had a new thermostat or alternator belt, both of which appeared to be the originals and the thermostat had a deformed seal which could explain one persistent water leak in that area.  The inlet manifold gasket that Rimmers provided had shrunk and the whole inlet manifold was leaking again, quite badly, which is really disappointing for a part that isn't even a year old and from a reputable supplier.

All in all, apart from some access issues with certain bolts, it's not been a bad job and we took our time since there's no rush to get the Rover back on the road while I'm enjoying the Applause.

Balls. The exruffgeezer roffle streetwise has shit its head gasket. Suppose that's what you get for treating it to a new clutch.

It ain't getting fixed.

CRV has failed its MOT, and the GTV has shit its gearbox, ungrateful shit boxes.

Only just spotted this @crapcarcollector is it definitely hgf? It did have one fitted a few years ago along with the heater matrix. What symptoms do you have?
