The recently purchased family bus Elgrand had its first MOT under our watch earlier.

Pleased with that, I thought there was a slight knocking at the front so that'll be the drop link and yep there is some slight cracking to the tyres, annoying really as they still have loads of tread on them, but nevermind.

There is an odd thing here though, the previous MOT didn't expire until the 4th of December, the new one runs out on the 20th of November. I never noticed it until I'd got home so rang the DVSA and explained the situation. Apparently the DVLA have not updated the records for a plate change we did about 6 weeks ago, they will sort that out for us but we'll lose the extra couple of weeks MOT we should have received unless we take it back for another MOT after the records have been updated.

Oh well all a bit strange, I'm not going to bother doing that over 2 weeks worth of MOT, just nice to get a pass on a new to me 17 year old car. First MOT's in my ownership always give me the fear.

Given my local garage the go ahead to sort the gearbox on the jazz. They have found a secondhand gearbox that they reconditioned a couple of years ago. Total bill should be around £550. Result.

Great news, much better result than whatever car you'd be able to get for 550 + scrap!

I finally got the big green breaking down machine drivable again. Today is the first day in weeks that I could take it to work instead of the Clio.

That "Rip Off Britain" campaign of the early 2000s ought to make a comeback.

Oslo airport bus that goes to the nearby hotels , often free at many airports, was £7 pp each way for about 1 mile. So just staying over night because our flight to Bergen was delayed cost £28 before any real costs.  Then the hotel restaurant was closed and a small cheese roll from the vending machine was about £6 and 500ml lager about £10. (About 5 years ago so probably way more now).

I have to say I agree in most part but Beijing Daxing airport prides itself on advertising its prices the same as on Beijing high street. And just over £3 for a Big Mac meal at that airport is good going.  Only trouble is they are not open after 3pm! For such a big modern airport it is VERY quiet there.

I’ve got these ones, they do the job. I expect they’re available on Amazon too, they’re just a generic Chinese thing. I’m assuming you’ve got the clamps that need pinching to lock the teeth into the holes.

Who'd have thought that the rebranding of Shaguar - a these days mostly quite obscure motoring badge to many - would have excited the media so much.

But it's quiet in the run up to Christmas, and those journo's have a lot of booze to pay for.

So like Pavlov's dog - they have all done their business after seeing Legs Akimbo jiving in chiffon in the ad.

The web is full of it - and as Oscar Wilde said it's better to be talked about than not.

It's united left and right - Jaaguar have even had a telling-off in the Guardian- that guardian of chiffon gyratory for all:

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/nov/22/jaguar-new-branding-cars-donald-trump

Pity poor Jaguar or not - but no company can stand still and I bet very few of the commentariat would put their money where their mouth is and actually buy one.

Lots of brands had their diehard enthusiasts but it never saved them.

Here's hoping  Shaguar survive.

Every now and then a gem of a place pops up while I've been keeping an eye on the local rental market, like this one.

One bed cottage with a conservatory, large garden, driveway, and shed for under £600 a month.  Okay, it's in the middle of nowhere and it's probably an ice box in the winter and you've got to hope you've got reliable transport that can deal with snow because there's no way that road is getting gritters or busses... but still.  If my life were just a tiny bit different, I'd be off to view this one.  Google maps tells me in 2019 it had a mature cottage garden and a City Rover on the drive, which means someone was definitely living the dream.

Even the delivery guy picking up a parcel from me today had an opinion on the rebrand (he saw my XJ and owns a very early XK8). I think Jag's marketing department has really nailed it, if brand exposure was their goal they scored a 10/10, I can't remember anything being quite so controversial in the automotive world recently, Cybertruck aside.

Last in action in a mk5 transit years ago and originally from a mk1 galaxy.

Chopped up my transit adapter plates and after much fuckabout glued together some berlingo ones. Wanted them slightly higher for old man gamey leg reasons. That i got spot on, the left/right position needs a little tweak though the drive home was a lot  more comfy.

It does indeed. Proper bit of sidewall going on there too.

They are the winners wheel though so no surprise there. Hope to treat myself over christmas to some new rubber hoops and get the full set on my van. Have killed all five five oe sized tyres running them on the front so it's high time.

1956 an interesting year in manufacturing terms.

Cover shows an Armstrong Siddeley 234/6. A poor seller leading to the gradual exit of AS from car manufacture.

Packard, Lanchester and Singer disappeared as marques or stand alone designs - Sunbeam Talbot became uprated Hillmans. Daimler production virtually ground to a halt and was the last year of roundy British styling as US fins and styling began to arrive etc etc.

Also the year of Suez and petrol supply difficulties - which led to Mini arriving in '59.

I left 156 sitting outside without driving it for a bit too long. Went to pick something up from it the other day…oh, no remote unlock. Right, nevermind I’ll just jumpstart it

IMG_5561.thumb.jpeg.eb9a22beb4d6804789780679bf4da6e3.jpeg

Nope. Battery completely flat.
Left it like this for 5 minutes, tried to start. Nope. Try locking with no cables. Nope. Tried a few more times. Nope.

So I set there idling for half an hour, and the result is it can lock and unlock on remote. Took the battery out, plugged in Lidl charger expecting it to say no as usual. It’s actually detected and charging!
Let’s see if it actually gets charged to start the car.
