Anyhow, bollocks to technology, I can't upload the video, but the beach buggy is running now

Posted

I've been seconded from my current trust to assist teaching in university, teaching new Paramedics. Wonderful. Looking forward to it. Was a bit down and out thinking I was getting slightly pigeonholed in my role but this a good chance to build up a route of of here.

Sad thing is that I've to commute to city centre Manchester which I've not planned on the right way to do it.

Still a few beers are in store for the weekend. 🥳

Yeah I'd hoped they'd just do the oil and filter change however they seem to be a knowledgeable place. Also the technician report was as thus:

"Standard Labour
Investigate gearbox fault.
Checked fault memory, 2 faults logged
" clutch 2 tolerance limit reached"
" clutch 2 mechanical malfunction"
Carried out test plan for faults, test plan
automatically checked pre selected
measured values and evaluated event
entries.
Concluded that the dual clutch requires
replacing.
The next step would be to remove the
gearbox and inspect clutch for damage
or wear.
It might be worth also removing the
mechatronic whilst gearbox removed to
check selector forks as these are known
to fail.
8 hours for clutch replacement
may require fly wheel
if we do remove the mech would require
new gasket and bolts plus 0.6 hours"

Is the £1700 quid including the dual mass flywheel and selector fork?

Car it is then. Park in a local station and a walk. How the fuck do the government want to encourage people off the road.

It's up and over Standedge, lots of hills, 28 miles each way, Google maps trys to bring you over Marsden Moor which isn't going to be quick.

After ten months off the road due to a fairly minor issue which I procrastinated about (and bought other cars in the meantime)….

Got my 9000 back!!!

Honestly it was like seeing an old friend again after many years!

A friend popped over with my old E-Class tonight, we looked like a late 90s executives meeting under an orange sky!

Got the PAS pulleys swapped. It's been slightly mullered though, as the first people I went to tried using a gear puller instead of a hydraulic press, and bent the pulley out of shape a bit. Their neighbour pressed the old one out and the new one on after making sure it wasn't too bent. As he took the paint off to look at the damage, I've splashed some of my own back on.

I've two chips to rectify on the wing, so it's looking like I'll be spending tomorrow getting the car mobile then Sunday making it look nice again.

the smart cars brakes needed bleeding, unfortunately the fluid reservoir lid was on too tight - some minor disassembly was required

re-assembly involved rather a lot of cable ties

and the brakes are still rubbish (i didn’t have time to do the rears as it started chucking it down and only the front half would fit in the garage )

Just occurred to me that a few days ago marked THREE YEARS ownership of Focus #1!

That moves it up to second place in my (non-existent) list of longest car ownerships, - I think!

Well my run of luck* continues:

Unexpected bill on family owned from new Golf. DSG Clutch gone. Estimate from a specialist to replace: £1700.

It's low mileage, 2008, immaculate bar that. MOT on Tuesday passed and no advisories.

So do I just get it fixed?

£1700 gets you nothing even running second hand.

It was my Dad's last retirement car until he passed away last month. 2022 really can get in the bin...

Salty, but DMF?  Mebbe get other quotes but if it's a trusted place, maybe worth it.

Any feedback from your date a while back?

How low is low mileage? How often has it had a DSG service and when was the last one? (time/miles)

If the box hasn't been looked after I wouldn't bother repairing it as they're ticking time bombs if not looked after, in that instance I'd just get a trusted reconditioned one fitted.

A £1700 repair is a lot for a 14 year old Golf. But you can't get a decent one for that to replace it 🤔 add in the sentimental factor (?) I'd say get it fixed, whether that's a replacement box or repairing your existing box

Shitting hell, reminds me how much I despise working on those things! 🤣 And FWD Mercs as well for that matter (wedge shaped A Class, and B Class)

Jag is booked on at local specialist on Monday for a diagnostic etc to tell me what the griff is with it.

Yesterday though the engine management light came on and I plugged in my £20 diagnostic jobbie and it said the egr flow was high.

Not sure if this is a new issue or is maybe its the cause of its woes. It probably would fit the issues it has.

I'd take it apart this weekend and give it a service with some 3 in one in case its stuck but I'm taking the lad out both days, so is still going to the Jag specialist to get looked at still in case its something else too. They can look at it with some proper Jag diagnostics and some sort of mechanical know how.

I hope its fixable. I do genuinely quite like this car. Even if this one is bollox, I'd consider another but I do think/hope this one is actually salvageable. I've been smoking around in it all week and its been quite cool and I like the old man colour as I am old man these days. I'm completely sure I don't look like an absolute tool driving around in it blasting out Fantazia 92 at full volume wearing my Fila bucket hat.

I would get it done. 1700 is a decent price for fixing a dsg.

My local auto specialist won't even change the fluid on my powershift.

Garages don't like dsg boxes, due to borkage potential.

Plus the sentimental value of the car, plus what else are you going to get for 1700. Yes you could get something else, but it won't be as tidy as what you have now.

Oh no. Definitely not at all trig. Get a thread up. I'm a little ashamed of my own stuttering content and love reading other people's. If you've the time, by all means write about it. 👍

I'm definitely interested man. I have to admit I tend to only read and post in the NN24 thread now. Having read Popular Classics and practical Classics for 30 years, I've read all the end to end restoration stories I'll ever want to see. This thread is a nice mixed bag, finding, fixing, driving, breaking, sweating and some woe/swearing.

The Capri looks amazing after a wash. You really have got lucky with the last 3 cars, Astra 240 and now this. Essentially sound cars not needing an absolute peen of work and worth quite a considerable bit more after you've finished. Being known as 'the car guy' has its positives. Better than me, all I get is 'M'ERE TAE YE SEE THIS' being faced with some right unrewarding job for hee haw consideration.

Looking forward to seeing more on this one.

Since my life is currently 45% work, 45% family that leaves 10% for cars. So although it's only mid September, I stuck another coat of Fuso 99Soft on the Saab and the 75.

20220909_170508.thumb.jpg.7ca0eeb3ad0dc9efc34b02c8e7a52dc0.jpg

You'll see the mess on the drive from the oil leak. Hopefully the new seal between the vacuum pump and head will cure it. If the pump itself is leaking I do have a seal to fix that too but as above, I was short on time so just boshed it back on for now.

20220909_170654.thumb.jpg.b657433d75cffb20040b428821a94da2.jpg

You'll have to take my word on the 75, my son and his pal were milling around the drive at the time and didn't want to get them in shot.

The wax was quite expensive but it says it lasts 12 months and I could have got away with not waxing them again as it was still doing its thing. I normally polish and wax them before winter but I didn't bother with the former this time as they really didn't need it.

The coolant change on the black Saab was an absolute war, worst I've ever had to do. The job itself was easy bar some rounded bolts on the undertray but there was a massive airlock just past the waterpump that simply would not move. I figured that a careful drive over some speedhumps and along a 60mph would shift it and that worked fine. Hopefully I won't have to touch the cooling system for a good while now.

Neighbour and local car dealer/property dealer/coach company owner/Budweiser drinker just picked up a mint genuine 190e 2.6 Sportline for a grand. Properly dry stored for 15 years.. started with some fuel and a jump. Why do I never find these things.😣

In other news, the Focus passed its MOT today, no advisories. Thank ****as I'd forgotten all about it until yesterday that it was due today..

Is that why BBC have informed us about 57 times that the national anthem is now God Save the King?

You’ve had some awesome cars on here Trig, keep your main thread updated (if you have one) at the very least so we can see progress. The Astra, the white Granada were just as good to see as this Capri, same for some of your projects long gone (Ital van, Marina estate etc).

Just under 43,000.

2000 of which I’ve added the last 6 months. It’s overdue it’s 40,000 mile DSG Change, although this specialist had to confirm this as VW’s own handbook doesn’t…!
