How often do folk check their big Rovers?

Every 2 weeks. If you have the translucent header tank,  get a small torch or if you have a smartphone use the one on that. Press it to the rear of the tank and move it right to the nearside corner and the beam will shine through the coolant and tell you where its at. Saves undoing the cap repeatedly as keeping the seals in good condition is particularly important on a Rover.

You can also enter diagnostic mode (Google will find it) and this will tell your the precise temperature of the coolant. The guage is indeed designed to be linear until its too late - useless.

Feeling like shit at the moment with life seemingly wanting to conspire against me. Anyhow to cheer myself up, I've been doing a bit of Moggie work. Not many pictures as not feeling up to another write up.

Got the master cylinder in though, remote brake reservoir and gravity bled the brakes. Still air in them, so will need to try pumping them with an assistant. But there is pedal pressure now and I've been able to adjust the rear drums + handbrake.

Also put the fuel tank in and gave it a start. Took quite a lot of churning to get it to start but eventually it did. Then a huge amount of smoke as the carb overflowed onto the exhaust. Wasn't overflowing before, so no idea why it's decided to now. Unfortunately a replacement needle and seat are backordered at most places.

Apart from that, it just needs the offside rear outer wing bolting back on and going for a drive.

Looking good on the weller wheels though.

Well it turns out @barefoot and @fatharris were closer to the truth than they thought, after having agreed a time to view the car with the seller, I messaged him an hour beforehand only for him to tell me he wasn't in and would let me know when he was back. I messaged him two hours later asking if he would be in or not, he read it instantly then replied 20 minutes later saying he thought he'd be home late and had no idea what was going on in his absence, which was a bit cryptic. Said he'd get back to me tomorrow - I'll believe that when I see it.

I doubt I'll end up getting it but you never know - it's a very tidy 960 on 120k with 11 months test, for £1k.

Enjoy that wank, son.

Cars come and go, so go and come.

I can haz choonz in the Charade.  Yesterday lunchtime I took the passenger side front door card off to see what was going on with the speaker.  It wasn't obviously damaged, but there were two spare speakers in a box in the boot that came with the car so I took the speaker out of the door and plugged in one of the spares.  No change, so I assumed it must be a wiring issue.  Went back out at lunchtime today to have another play, and whilst checking the wiring in the door for obvious damage I decided almost on a whim to try the other spare speaker in the boot.  Plugged it in and immediately the dulcet tones of Radio 2 issued forth.

So I have three knackered speakers and one working one.  Obviously a weak point...  Because it's such a small narrow car though the single speaker on the passenger side is perfectly adequate for listening to the radio, even at A road speeds.  So that's good.

I've ascertained that the issue with the Laguna is that the pressure pipe that goes from the exhaust just before the DPF through to the sensor under the bonnet has split where it goes over the exhaust.  It's rubber and obviously couldn't cope with the heat.  Given that the OEM pipes are silly money, I've decided I'm going to try cutting out the section of rubber hose that sits above the exhaust and replacing it with copper brake pipe.  I've had to order a reel because the DPF pressure hose is 1/4" and all the brake pipe I have is 3/16", but it's still a lot cheaper than buying a replacement pipe from Renault.  I may attempt it this weekend if the brake pipe has arrived by then, weather and Covid booster jab permitting.

I had a reward* email from Great Magazines the other day - "Your free £5 Amazon gift  voucher has arrived".  No it fucking hasn't - the offer is limited to the first 1750 subscribers, who must have all got there within an hour of the email being sent to me. Not impressed.

Being brave and taking the MG6 from Oldham to Skegness to visit my parents. Surprisingly it's behaving itself for once!

George wanted in on the photo too. PXL_20211217_182116795.thumb.jpg.7c53542f9757f0b3af55f13aaa150060.jpg

That's shouting 1978-79 at me.  In a Turin accent...

There's a '78 Corrolla there with 'only' 8k. I'd say 79-81, 1980 most likely.

Great pictures, I love these old adverts. I agree with Chaseracer, late 78 or early 79, I will go with early to mid 79. Nice to see the wanted advert for all Fiats and mk3 & 4 Cortina’s .

They have 12 used cars for sale and only one Fiat at a main Fiat dealer.

A Fiat salesman once told my Dad that if he bought a Fiat, he'd never want another marque again. The 128 lasted about a year IIRC, before being traded in for a R12. He stuck with Renault for years after that.

I've had a mouse living in my Berlingo for a few months.  I noticed because anything edible left inside would disappear. And a few weeks ago two Jack Russell terriers at a customer's house were very interested in the front bumper of the van. However, yesterday he went too far and shredded some diesel receipts. So action was taken.IMG_20211216_223152.thumb.jpg.1ae4ea96b276fdddda83262b992e7fdd.jpg

RIP, mouse. A lesson in the dangers of going too far.

I have never shared this with anyone but one of my strangest car cravings has now come to life again. And it is to own a real Norwegian taxi from the 30s to the 50s. Why I do not know and they are not easy to find as few survived but I really want one. Should I get help?

Good luck man, I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares to your old one. Personally I think the driving experience on a petrol auto is the closest you'll get to a Lexus for the money, very quiet.
