In other Nippa news, ours isn't well. Found myself crawling up a slight gradient at 20mph in second gear. It normally reserves such activities only for really steep hills. Doesn't feel like a misfire, just seems down on power. 

 

Got back home, pulled the air filter off first. There was an orange, sticky substance beneath it, just before the throttle body. WTF? No idea what that's about.

 

Checked the HT leads next. One was resting against the metal cowling for the rad fan. I tweaked the lead to stop it doing that, went for a test drive, and all seems well - though Mrs DW reports that it generally only plays up when cold. I'll have to wait for it to cool down again then won't I? It is still 1000 miles past a service. I have the bits on order. Wondering whether I should have included a set of HT leads and a dizzy cap in that. It's pissing down with rain, so not sure I can be arsed to deal with it at the moment.

Not sure why that'd only impact it in the wet. According to Mrs DW, it's worst when damp and before the engine has warmed up. That was certainly the case as I was driving it.

I picked up my first crack in a windscreen today! Something flicked up, the bang made me shit myself then on the way home I noticed a spidered chip in the bottom corner.

 

Its outside the swept area, and the meriva went for near 3 years with a bigger chip before it fully cracked, and hopefully a Gooner2 windscreen is still quite common so I'll leave it for now.

Future SIL wanted her plugs changed on her clio i said ok no probs, when ive changed many over the years, why dafuq do renfault make it difficult, realised usual spark plug sockets are too big matron!! Rang around 5 places and finally found place that sell thin walled socket.

If so be very careful with the HT leads. They're fragile and bonded onto the coil pack. Breaking them will require a new coil pack combo.

Went out to Tesco in the Rover earlier. Glad the mother decided to drive back as it revealed that the back of the car had gone all Ozzy Osburne on me, with only one working brake light and one working tail light. All sorted now - big relief as I have some pretty long drives planned.

Do you trust the temp sender? Any chance of checking the temp with a infragun or similar.

 

Part of the problem with older cars is that you can suddenly notice things that have always existed, especially when paranoid about something. At least half the time they are unconnected.

 

Where in London? Could a shiter have a poke for you?

I think it was a false alarm. The injector's definitely blowing though which after a long motorway journey is causing the engine to run hotter. I'm back home now.

My Savvy had same motor.... I found a 14MM thinwall box spanner (from my Estelle toolroll!) + length of steel tube = perfect & free

Hmmmmmmmm... Do you think it would work with LHM? I'm planning to take the the Hydraurincage out of the Xantia and put some proper LHM back in, as well as an oil change too.

I have bought one this week and intend to try it out on a Puma oil change this weekend.

I can get by without it, I reckon. I actually changed the LHM before by using a huge turkey baster.

LHM is oil, its therefore defo got lubricating properties and would be fine in one of these pumps

My brother had one. Interior was a bit flaky compared to earlier Saab's but it had a lovely punchy motor and was a comfortable way to travel.

That style Saab made me from a Saab hater to a Saab fan. Ok probably not as good overall to an equivalent age BMW (rust less though) or Audi, but a lot cheaper to buy and run though.

 

Aero is only trim level on this style 9-3 btw.

One of the dad's at school today showing me his new car. It's a 60 plate 1.9 cdti zafira ,96,000 miles. He is made up cos the salesman sorted him a good deal. £135.00 a month over five years. The car was £5,000. Where are these people when decent members of this collective are trying to sell good motors. Oh and he got a one month warranty ,but the salesman told him he would nevery need a warranty cos it's reliable ,being a diesel and all. I actually like the zafira. Does what it says on the tin.

Oh dear god over £8k in repayments and they wouldn't put a decent warranty on it??? Still selling that finance package will have been a nice little earner, shame I can't remember the base rates anymore to calculate it...
