Erm you'll have to make the judgement call on that, as long as the engine can't rotate and fall out it should be ok, you literally do just flick the key and turn it straight off so the starter just starts to turn the engine.

 

Also try and secure the socket and bar or ring spanner at both ends so it can't fly off when it all goes horribly wrong Tie it to the axle stand or something. Doing this many years ago socket and bar flew off cunningly avoiding the gap between bonnet and front wing but broke next door but ones neighbours car headlight and narrowly missed mates head in the process.

cats: I'm going to say hydraulic because I remember having to bleed the red one to make its clutch work but I don't remember having to sort out a clutch cable.

The Spacy passed its MOT first time this morning.  The Rover of Doom, however, is continuing to resist my attempts to return it to the road.  I thought I'd whip the brake drum off to have a look and see if I could see exactly what was sticking.  One of the retaning screws came out with little difficulty, but the other wouldn't budge, and I eventually ended up gouging it out (it's Philips and brass so not the strongest thing).  I'm going to run it up to a mate's with a better selection of screwdrivers than mine to see if he can do owt with it - otherwise it's going to have to be drilled out, which is less than ideal as it'll mean the drum is only held on by one screw (and the wheel studs, obvs).  I'm honestly finding it easier and easier to see the attraction of a new car on a PCP.  In fact it's my birthday tomorrow so I might treat myself to a trip to the Suzuki dealer and have a snuffle round a Celerio, see if I could live with one as a daily.

fun fact:  If you put 'celeriac car' into Google to try and find an amusing picture to ask why someone (Wuvvum) is considering buying a vegetable to drive around in, Google automatically corrects it to 'celerio car'.  I could find no examples of cars made from celeriac, sadly.

In that case pull the slave cylinder out and check it isn't leaking. I ended up changing the crank seal 4 times on the Discovery after spotting oily mess in the bell housing that actually came from the slave cylinder.

It's difficult to please everyone sadly but keep Saturday 22nd October free, we are having a all day meet at Shotley, starting from 10am till the afternoon. Hopefully that might be enough to get a few more people to come down.

Oh bugger! I’m off up to North Yorkshire for a few days then, so sadly I’ll miss that one too. That being said, I will be calling in to see former AS-er Mash on the 22nd so there will be some car-related stuff occurring.

 

Do like the Manta. They look ace on the standard Rostyles.

The transmission pan leak on the Oldsmobile is now hopefully cured. Another job ticked off the long list. New gasket fitted and bolts tightened up. Jobs so far completed are:

 

New rear transverse spring and isolator pads fitted (£££'s)

Broken boot lock cylinder replaced

Transmission filter and pan gasket replaced

New grille fitted (original was comprehensively broken)

Busted glove box hinges replaced

Full set of brake pads obtained for fitting soon

Rust hole in wing repaired

Horrid poundshop wheel trims removed and binned

Bonnet release cable fixed

New 'Oldsmobile' bonnet badge bought from USA to replace the broken one that just said 'Old'

Full service kit purchased from Rock Auto

 

Work is progressing. Would be amazed if Ken didn't want to buy this back once it is finished....!

Fed up with the rain. Rain equals paranoia about the dollop so I put it in the garage and after drying her with a soft chamois put her nice new cover on. Fucking thing is an XXL and for the biggest cars and it only just doesn't bloody fit!  It's covered the car completely apart from the front bumper which it will not go over as it's too tight. Also, the sodding roof mounted carphone aerial (little stubby thing) made a lovely but non too neat rip in it.

Rain is just water... You wash your car with water so probably not worth worrying about really. I have a slight tendancy to be OCD myself, so understand. But it can take over your life needlessly.

I've got the Mercury back!!

Went and got it this afternoon after it suffered big time from sucking up rust from it's old fuel tank.

 

So it's now got a brand new fuel tank installed, with new straps. The fuel filler neck was rusty and the seal between it and the tank was pretty crap so that's now sorted.

While it was having this done I got them to sort the autobox leak which is also now good and then I got them to put a new MOT on it which of course it passed with no advisories.

I took it the long way home of course! I really love that car and it's worth every penny I've spent!

 

Next bit of news isn't quite from the last 24 hours but the Transit has also been MOT'd, an easy pass again. They love the old thing at the garage I use, one of the guys there has an Anglia historic stock car and wants my mk2 Transit as a day van and tow vehicle for the Anglias trailer! I'm not selling though!

Fun Fact, when the Celerio was being launched, Suzuki did a doordrop through us/royal mail. Was all booked in and confirmed... then the autocar brake filures happened and UK sales were stopped etc, and the mailing had to be cancelled. My justification to RM as to why it had to be cancelled and rebooked was a link to the autocar article, they understood perfectly and we got away with £0 cancellation charges, and charged the client 50% because we r bastards and like our annual bonus and pissups

 

Hope they fixed that!

Went on a 6 hour round trip to get this for work.

A 220 thousand mile manual 2.7 disco.

 

Apparently it's a proper commercial version but it looked a bit home brew in the back.

 

It's a rhd but the speedo is in kph, what's the crack there?

 

Also it's coil sprung is that standard?

 

It's because our firm didn't want to spend £££ on defenders they thought ropey old discos would be better.

Im off to bed...mega early start tomorrow for collectioneering. Im not going to live blog it because 1- I am too much of a technotard, 2- I have previously had my wallet rinsed for data roaming so wont do that again in a hurry and 3- due to the timescale it would be a really boring read.

What's the extra switch for under the window switches?  I've never seen that on an R8 before.

Isn't it a rear window lock switch?  "On" means they work from the switches on the back doors, "Main" means they only work from the main switch panel on the driver's door?

Yeah, it's a Ronda window lock switch. Our Civics had very similar ones, even the two door for some reason.

Some top shite going on round these parts (I mean this site), I wish I had more space/money/physical ability and I'd have a load of more cars that you lot keep tempting me with. I have never had a Rover R8 of any description, nor a 75 (nearly did - 1.8 turbo - but got scared so ran away!) never had an XM (nearly did but realised I was being ripped off so ran away)  and so it goes on and on...

 

Oh, and in other news, yes, I am paranoid, OCD to an extreme and it does control my life to an unreasonable extent but I love the big green dollop now. It is all sorted and drives like new (I suppose) and it really is a rather special place to be. I really want to keep it this way! But, I also think the viscous coupling on the fan is faulty and am now considering removal and electric fan install instead. Or a new Viscous coupling, I should ask Panhard where he got his from.
