Which car are you?

Tonight I had a quick look at the wiring on my SD1'S starter motor as it had stuck the last time I tried to start it.

This is my fourth SD1 - I passed my test in my first one. They were a better car than most people imagine, however a bad one could put you off motoring for life.

Maybe I like them so much because they should have done better - pretty much like yours truly.

Which car are you?

Mk2 Granada, grew up being ferried about in one, dreamt of driving it one day but my dad sold it before I could drive so I bought one of my own 20 years later

Had another day failing to fix it today, I love it but I reckon, like a lot of things, they were better in the 80's

Traction Avant - sign of genius/trouble (delete as applicable) to come. Straightforwards but unconventional and with an eye to the future. Genetically multicultural, works surprisingly well in Africa but definitely of European origin. Made in Britain.

Runs of out revs at high speed, but with regular oil changes keeps running reliably. Best on interesting B roads, likes changing direction and entertaining in good company but sudden gear changes aren't always seamless. Quickish from A to B and reliable in challenging situations.

Lotus.  And we know how that works as an acronym!

I used to be a mk1 mg metro. I'm more like a p2 v70 diesel now, with 7 seats.

Mini. Had five of them. Reflects my character - outdated, uncomfortable, unreliable and hard to keep going. But fun to live with and easy to get bits for!

Ford Thunderbird. Slim and athletic in youth, gradually became more lardy and sluggish in middle age, now mainly seen at classic car shows :)

Hindustan Ambassador.

Born in the 1950s, reluctant to move with the times.   Brought up on a sensible post-war diet but rather bloated through increased consumption of Madras and Bangladeshi cuisine.    Reached the end of the road as far as integrating with society is concerned sometime at the end of last century.    Missing a few teeth but soldiering on with modified dentistry.

Now mostly encountered lurking outside the less salubrious pubs and dance halls of many towns and cities.

Often appearing close to break-down but quite capable of many more years abuse.

Metallic blue 1978 Opel Ascona Berlina.

I grasstracked one of those back in the distant past

Fitted it with a 3.0 v6 from a Granada coupe of all things...

I'd be a Fiat Strada in 105 or 130 Tc flavour

In a sea of Fords it was the oddball choice, but every bit as good or better than what the sheep were all driving

Awkward, different for the sake of it, surprisingly spacious, dependable, thirsty, easy to maintain, doomed to obscurity.

Montego 2.0 countryman.

Clear family resemblance, unremarkable looks, a bit scabby. Happy to blend into the background. Competent at what I do, but don't pretend I can do things I can't.

BX 19RD estate. Capable of carrying far more than you expect. Quick if I don't slow down for corners and capable of running on what comes out of a chip shop fryer. Scruffy and usually covered in dog hair

Another Granada here, not necessarily a specific model or even generation.

Large, comfortable, reliable, simple, uncomplicated. Maybe not as sophisticated or exciting as the competition but will usually get the job done. Quite durable and strong, used to be quite smart and presentable although that was shallow and short lived.

So far even though maintenance has been neglected , still seems to start and run ok even if the bodywork is looking rough, might start looking after the mechanicals a bit, already noticing creaky suspension and a sluggish gear change, hopefully the waterways aren't too furred up, dont want a HGF.

1968 Commer Imp van.

Basic, outdated, spectacular underachiever, underperformer (according to some) despite great efforts, often been a victim of changing circumstances outwith my control, tries to avoid complications by getting them into perspective then ignoring them ( it usually works).

Doesn't give a fk really and has to laugh when unreliability 'just occurs' wherever it may be, keeps trying and enjoys a basic modest existence. Likes travelling in Scotland.

Fifty in a few months time. Not ready for the scrapheap. Fucking win overall.

Citroen SM, full of good ideas, modern but complicated and conflicted with mixed up origins.

VW Beetle.

Cheeky and simple, dependable. Remained mostly unchanged for the majority of my life, I've had this haircut since I was 18, I'm the same weight since then too, and some of my clothes are over 10 years old.

Also horrible emissions, slow, and probably in need of a bit of upgrading.

Probably a mid 1980s Nissan Sunny B12 saloon. With chrome hubcaps.

Lacking charisma but very dependable.

If you start pissing green fluid, see a doc

Facel Vega.

Once a flamboyant, nonconformist, arrogant arsehole, with an eclectic taste and way too much intellect, that didn't give one little shit about anything, but saw the World at 140 OMGMPH. Now a grumpy deteriorated heap abandoned in a hedge.

What remains is the heft, unrefinedness, a drinking habit by the bucketload and I envy others of my kind who have made it into very toff and pampered retirements.

I wish they'd get cancer rot away.

Also, people think I'm a lot taller than I actually am.

Born after it's time. A touch of class in an otherwise common shell,  rare as fuck, could have achieved great things had I been born 10 years earlier

Started off as a Fiesta 957 Pop plus, almost the lowest of the low but not quite at the very bottom*

Progressed to some sort of Hyundai Accent, plentiful, cheap and reliable but somehow anonymous and overlooked; usually a bit ubiquitous and uncared for.

Finally arrived at Kia Picanto 1 status, No extras but will offer a 7 year warranty that other more fashionable competitors can not match.

*My 84 year old Father has owned each of these examples, The Fiesta (The first car I ever drove) had a vinyl roof.

Looks more valuable than it is.  Old fashioned even when new. Surprisingly dependable.  Slightly odd looking.  Handle with care.
