Dollywobbler's Invacar - Ongoing

For all the aggro they are, just replace them.

I had an unmighty quick glance. Lenses alone are in two flavours and both are circa 16 quid. Why tape?

Did you find the correct all-red lower lens though?

Halfords are absurdly expensive for electrical consumeables. DIY shops or Electtical Factors are more reasonable.

Very true, although if you can blag a Halfrauds Trade Card it will reduce the cost of own-brand bits and bobs down to merely 'a bit pricey' - and depending on what other retail options are available to you locally, it might make sense. If I urgently need a spade connector at 10am on a Sunday, my options are highly limited (though that's largely down to the NI religious mafia keeping most of the shops here shut until 1pm so retail staff have no excuse for not attending church - though hilariously, Halfords still remains exempt from NI's Sunday Trading Restrictions on the grounds that "an ambulance might need a drive belt in an emergency" - yeah guys, no worries, can order that in for you by Thursday).

Thanks! For now, I've chucked a load of the connectors, and even one of the tail-lamp housings, into a pot of cola to soak overnight and think about what they've done. I think buying some new bits might be wise in the long run.

The Britax 10104 is the correct part number for the red/amber only tail lamp. Britax (PMG), no longer make or stock them although the lens still appears to be available here - https://www.malpasonline.co.uk/oem/10104/Britax

......for a mere £16.65 a pop...

At that price I'd make do with the still available 10103 with number plate clear panel and avoid lying on the ground or going out at night to see the difference ????

No, that's the problem. The ones with the clear bit I don't want are much more numerous, and a lot of listings don't make it clear. The lens I need is a 10104. Or, I could probably get away with repairing the lens and just fitting a new 10139 reflector.

Posted

Though that doesn't say whether they're actually available or not.

True, but it's the best to hand bar calling Britax PMG. Give them a bell and get them to sponsor...

I reckon they might be cheaper from a HGV trailer place or caravan local sort of shop.

Or blagged at trade price or something.

Or even the local tractor place that does Sparex stuff. I'm on the moby, so can't easily look up.

That's the badger found it last night. If my cheap cola fix doesn't cure the lamp issue I've already got, I'll need to order an entire lamp, so waiting to see what occurs...

In other news, the wiper clip sent by Greengartside arrived today. Sadly, it didn't fit the Invacar. Then I remembered I'd found some random clips while tidying the garage, so managed to find one that seems to work. Not convinced it's actually the right one, but we'll see.

That enabled me to discover that the wiper I'd rebuilt was absolutely shite, so I ended up replacing it with a Bosch blade I had sitting around.

While doing that, I was fielding calls from people who probably assumed I was working in my office, not faffing about with an ancient invalid carriage. Oh well! Back to work for a bit now. More fettling tomorrow.

Just spoke to DVLA, who have been a pleasure to deal with, it must be said. I ballsed up on the V62 by getting some digits swapped around on the chassis number (there are only six!), but things seem to be progressing now. It has been 'unscrapped' on the system, so I'm hopeful this will eventually result in delivery of a logbook. Expecting a call-back tomorrow.

Yeah, I've been utterly baffled by the fact that I've dealt with the DVLA by phone twice recently and on both occasions they were an absolute image of efficiency, friendliness and competence.

Far cry from my last dealings with them about a year ago (trying to sort out a V5 they'd lost when I moved house) which was a fate that I'd not have wished on my worst enemy.

Watching with great interest to see how this side of things progresses given I've got serious designs on one of these myself now...

Snap of my old Britax-PMG catalogue:

post-19900-0-01160300-1514912686_thumb.png

PDF Snap of current page The WEBPAGE has an error regarding lens colour, but the key features are correct. (first part is the series number, middle bit 00 is the number plate version. 01 non-number plate version and the last bit is the voltage)

post-19900-0-56051000-1514912158_thumb.png

Okay, see that. That is from the Sparex Tractor lickers lighting catalogue and the online entry for the 3 function (Amber/Red/Reflex) is HERE

The whole non-numberplate light unit is HERE

They are wholesalers.

[Mini digression: I was looking for a petrol pump repair kit for an AC type Y pump to rebuild. I found that Sparex did what I wanted. I was visiting parents, so went round corner to the Lloyd Carlisle tractor place. They ordered a pair of them in (was about a fiver each) and they were willing to post them on to me in Ireland for a modest fee to save me waiting until my next trip.]

Anyway, they show the 4 function (with numberplate light) version as out of stock.

So, either:

Britax PMG 10104 / Sparex S.18458 for the lens.

Britax PMG 9020.01.12V / Sparex S.18457 for the whole unit.

Do you have an agri-dealer local?

Posted

Probably. Maybe I'll have a word...

Far less important was removing the indicator lenses at the front, to see what lurked within...

Ok then! Something has been nesting in here. It wasn't home.

Then I decided to go full non-ginger, using a pair of clear 2CV lenses (that annoyingly don't fit my 2CV). Oh, I like this...

The wiper arm is currently off, being re-painted black, as it should be.

Was looking at that picture for a while thinking it reminded me of something.

Then just dawned on me Mater from "cars"

No, DW - you must keep it period amber...

It has been 'unscrapped' on the system

Is this a thing? Someone on Flickr suggested that it was possible to repatriate a scrapped car back to the road but I always thought that

Certificate Of Destruction = the final curtain.

It is possible. I think a few cars managed to escape the previous Scrappage scheme on this basis. A precedent has been set for the Invacars though. Much work by the Invalid Carriage Register.

I imagine there is exemptions for historic vehicles of special interest. Given how important a history these little cars played and how few are left, I can see why it's justifiable.

Did the big cull of these take place before the CoD was brought in?
